L ea lay under the vast branches of the willow tree and
tried to think of a reason to smile. Life was becoming
harder and harder for the twelve year old and she had
already experienced death more times than most adults
had in their lifetime. Living at the halfway house was
supposed to give Lea a friend to lean on, a shoulder to
cry on. But it had only brought her more heartache. After
befriending another girl who's parents had died she
thought she had found solace., but yesterday had been
another day Lea had pleaded for something to go right,
pleaded for a miracle. But it never came, Pebbles was
dead, and it was the fourth death Lea had witnessed in
her life, and every one was still imprinted in her mind,
and nothing could remove those images. Lea sighed and
found her fingers stroking across a small plaited bracelet,
worn and tattered many would wonder why she hadn't
thrown it away yet.
T hreaded into the worn earthy colored thread were four
beads, together spelling out L-O-V-E. Lea let a little smile
spread across her face and remembered when she had
plaited the bracelet for her mother, even though it looked
a mess and wasn't nearly as good as a bought one her
mother had loved it and worn it every day. It was the last
possesion Lea had, her mother had been wearing it in the
car crash. And now Lea wore it. They hadn't let her take
anything to the foster home, another placement that hadn't
worked out. Aparantly keeping things only kept the memories
alive, something the social workers strived to kill. As Lea
looked across the garden she saw somebody familiar
approaching. "Hey" she managed to muster up a reply
and even a small smile towards the boy.
