Third Years Lesson Five

Professor Adler had made sure that the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom was emptied with all that could be in the way, and so they would have the space to practice. She replaced her desk once again with the large wardrobe with the boggart inside of it. She was excited for the lesson, since she found it an interesting one to be part of when she was at school. But Geo was also on guard since she knew it would be an intense lesson. She wanted her students to feel safe. Some had spoken to her for a one on one session prior to today's class, but Geo still expected everyone to participate today.

Today was the day her third-year students would be coming face to face with their fears and try to banish them by using the spell she had taught them a couple of weeks ago. She stood by the door when the students arrived and welcomed them inside with a reassuring smile when she noticed a couple hesitating. She wanted to see every face to get an image of how they were facing this lesson today. She gestured the students to come closer to her in the front. '' Hello everyone.'' Geo greeted them. '' Form a line please.'' She added, gesturing in front of her and closing the classroom door with an quick movement. ''Today. I want everyone to think of the thing they fear the most and turn it into something funny. Remember, the incantation to banish the boggart is Riddikulus.'' She than reminded them and some perhaps had no idea what they feared, but that would be shown soon. She paused to look around the classroom and then beckoned for the first in line to step forward with an encouraging smile. That was brave. She stepped up to them and said, ''Again, the incantation alone is not enough. Think of something that you find truly amusing and use that when you say the incantation out loud. I can assure you that the result will make all of us laugh, so you needn't be afraid.'' She said before giving the students a reassuring smile. ''I want everyone to be respectful, if I see you fooling around, you can stay and take part in a detention.'' And with that last strict warning Professor unlocked the wardrobe giving the student a nod, and with a flick of her wand to let the boggart come out.

To recieve an O:
- Roleplay the lesson, and use Riddikulus to turn your character's fear into something amusing.
If you roleplay the lesson but do not mention the boggart taking the shape of the fear you will receive an A, and if your character fails to successfully perform the spell, they will receive an E.

Eli wasn’t sure how he felt about this lesson, he knew it was coming, they’d all been told they would be facing a boggart, and he’d done the reading, but he wasn’t sure he could ever be prepared for what would step out from behind. He vaguely thought he might know but he still wasn’t prepared for what he felt when his turn came and it was two of his siblings that stepped out of the wardrobe. Rose and Jonah both stared at him, both of them saying horrible things to him about how they could never trust him again, how could he treat his siblings like this, they never wanted to speak to him again, at full volume so half of the class could probably hear it. He didn’t even want to look at any of his families face as he tried to calm himself down to remember the spell. Riddikulus. He tried a couple of times to get the spell to work, but he couldn’t, and eventually the Professor had to step in to help. He immediately retreated to the other side of the room, and dropped his head into his hands. He clearly couldn’t even manage to do a spell in a moment of stress or conflict. How useless was he?

Rose wasn’t exactly thrilled to be facing a boggart in front of the entire class, this sort of thing had never been her brand after all, but she’d taken a potion before hand that she hoped would mitigate anything else that might happen during the class. The siblings were all in line, Eli was in front of her but Sayuri and Jonah were behind her. She watched in horrified silence when it was Eli’s turn and it was herself and Jonah who stepped out of the wardrobe saying horrible things that she would never actually say to her brother in real life. Her stomach twisted in knots and her fingers clenched into a fist as she watched the scene unfold, horrified and guilty over the whole thing. It made her feel sick to watch it, and then when he failed to even manage to produce the spell she wanted to chase after him when he slunk away, but she couldn’t because she was up next and after that display, she certainly wasn’t sure how she was supposed to follow. So when her mother stepped out of the wardrobe and started berating her and telling her she would never live up to the Edogawa name and how everything she was going through was just her trying to get attention, Rose got pissed. Not at her mother of course, but at the boggart for upsetting her brother. So she formed her thoughts into a coherent one in her mind and turned her raving mother into a chicken, well, she was in a chicken costume anyway and then she shouted “Riddikulus!” And watched the class laugh. She didn’t follow Eli, she left him alone, she felt like maybe he would need it.

The lesson with the Boggart had come a tad too fast in Lilith's opinion. Sure she'd had a bit to prepare herself emotionally, but it still didn't make it any easier. She'd told Eoghan previously about the possibility that her Boggart might come in the shape of him. Not because she was afraid of him, but because she was afraid of losing him. Her deepest fear had always been to be left alone, by those most important to her dying or disappearing. That had been the exact thing that had come out of the closet when she'd met with Professor Adler, it never failed to make her stomach sink.

Standing in front of the closet Lilith gripped her wand as tightly as she could, her eyes were wide as she gave a nod to the Professor to open the closet doors. What came out was the familiar back of Eoghan, it wasn't his face but his back because that was her fear. Of him walking away from her, of those she loved walking away from her. With every passing second the back grew smaller the further away it got and slowly the solid form started to turn more transparent, as if disappearing completely. Lilith was frozen in place long enough for another form to appear, this time it was her mum also walking away from her. Eyes wide the Ravenclaw raised her wand, her hand shook as she did her best to stay grounded in the moment. Repeating that she was okay, it was just a Boggart in her head Lilith tried to picture the two forms turning around and walking towards her perhaps laughing at something. She didn't want to turn them into a laughing stock so to say, just make the scene funnier. In her hesitation a third form appeared her dad. That made her freeze completely. She'd already lost her grandmother, her father was all she had left of her. "Ri-riddikulus." Lilith finally got out, her voice wavering and nothing happening. It was harder and harder to stay grounded. the further each of those forms got. She could not she Eoghan anymore, he'd disappeared first and Lilith felt her heart breaking at the loss of her best friend. Even if it wasn't actually happening. "Riddikulus." Lili tried again, her voice breaking as her mum too had become completely transparent. They were all disappearing and there was nothing the third year could do.

Taking in a shuddering breath Lilith looked at the Professor as she tried one last time. "Riddikulus." This time Lilith thought of the first time Eoghan had met her parents during that Christmas and when Leo had practically forced them all to play snowball fight on the yard and she'd caught her parents watching them with a smile. She watched as the boggart slowly turned into that scene, of them throwing snowballs at each other and Lilith felt her whole body crumble from relief.

Susie had a plan. Whatever came out of that closet - she was just gonna own it. She'd thought for ages about what her boggart might be, and all of the possibilities were equally embarrassing, so she might as well just pretend like she didn't care. It wasn't real, anyway. It couldn't actually scare her. Honestly, some people were so dramatic. She felt a bit sorry for Lili, just because it was Lili, but she almost wanted to give her a shake as well. It wasn't really Eoghan! Just say Riddikulus already!

Oh. It was Susie's turn. She gripped her wand, striding toward the closet. Her face in its shiny reflection looked tough, even though her heart was hammering like crazy. The door opened. Out came...

Bees? No. A swarm of something, though. It writhed around in the air above her, a buzzing black cloud, a million tiny insects packed together to form one disgusting creature. Features started to appear within it. Eyes. A nose. A gaping mouth. Susie took a step back. She forgot what she was supposed to do. What was that thing? What was it? What was it doing? It started to shriek at her. She covered her ears. It wasn't real. It wasn't real!

She thrust her wand out. "Riddikulus!" she shouted. The swarm exploded into confetti, colourful scraps of paper showering down in front of her. For a second she just stood there, staring at the mess, feeling cold all over. She wasn't scared of insects. So what in Merlin's name was that?

She walked back to the group, this time without any bravado. Well, at least it wasn't Luke, or something. Maybe she'd been a bit mean, calling people dramatic. It wasn't real, but it felt real. It felt... awful.

Jonah fell in line with Eli and Rose. Watching their fears come to life was... Jonah didn't know how to feel about being Eli's fear. And how close it was to what had happened in their first year. It wasn't that Jonah hated his brother or that he never wanted to talk to him again—it was that Jonah thought that his family would be better off without him. Rose's fear was... he supposed it wasn't surprising, and he was proud of her for managing to cast the spell. There was no time to think about theirs though since his turn had just arrived.

He didn't understand what or who stepped out of the wardrobe. It looked like him at first glance, but that didn't look right. It didn't look like Eli either. He briefly wondered if this was how it felt for other people to tell him and Eli apart. He realized then that the features were either flickering between his and Eli's or that the boggart had somehow merged their features together—not really hard considering how similar they looked. There wasn't much time to focus on the appearance though when it started speaking. He paled when the boggart aired out how he was both a freak and a failure. Called him a freak for liking dresses and things that his sisters had. Told him how he would never amount to anything, no matter how much he tried. He didn't even bother with casting the spell, he ran from the boggart who exposed him so thoroughly, its laugh haunting him before it was either dealt with or would transform for its next victim.

Eurydice went to the lesson because she was required to; she wasn't ready however, to have the whole class find out about her fear so she would stubbornly refuse to come near the wardrobe and perform the spell—not after the disastrous private session she'd had.

Jasper was pretty mortified watching other people's fears that he wondered if his fear was exactly this, lining up watching people face their fears while waiting to face his own fear, it was actually really strange that he was in this position in the first place. He felt frightened, anxious, and perhaps a little sick. Once his turn did come, Jasper watched the wardrobe opened and out came loads of balloons. He was confused because he wasn't afraid of balloons. Until they started rubbing against each other making this horrible sound that went right through him, then he yelped as the balloons started popping at random, making him jump each time. "Riddikulus" Jasper cast, and then whenever a balloon popped, it made a fart noise instead. Jasper laughed because that was actually pretty funny, and managed to send the boggart back to its wardrobe.

Amory watched as students before him went ahead and faced the Boggart, he had no idea what his would be, he'd never really given his fears much thought. As it happened it was then Amory's turn and he stared expectantly as the Boggart took the form of an empty book. It was fine at first until the book went on and on, opening more empty pages. It was pages upon pages of nothing. An uncomfortable feeling started building in Amory's body as he realized it was the representation of knowing nothing about his family. For all he knew there was none to begin with. "Riddikulus." He cast firmly, wanting the emptiness to disappear. In an instant the book started filling with jokes and Amory let out a sigh. The idea of not knowing about anything was very daunting for him.
