Third Years, Lesson Five: Lecture on Animagi

Edward started the lesson as a border collie which shouldn't have come as such of a surprise to the third years this time. When he was ready to start, he barked at the class to get their attention. But, of course, he couldn’t teach like this. The professor moved to the front of his desk and transformed back into his usual self, standing in front of the class. "Good morning third years," He started his lesson, "Today we'll be discussing Animagi. As you just saw, an animagus is a witch or wizard who can transform into an animal at will, a choice made with deliberate intent. Let me tell you first hand that learning to be an animagus is a lengthy and extremely arduous ordeal to undergo. Once a witch or wizard has successfully become an animagus they must register with the Ministry of Magic." He explained, "The registration of animagus forms has sparked significant debate. Critics argue that it invades personal privacy, as the information is made public, and could expose individuals to scrutiny or even danger. On the other hand, proponents emphasise that we live in a world of endless magical possibilities, and knowing who can transform and what specific markings they have helps maintain safety and accountability." Edward shrugged, moving on from the debate.

He glanced around at his students to gauge their attention and allow any to catch up on notes before he continued. "An animgus is not able to choose their own animal form. Want to be a clever border collie? Tough luck, your animagus form might very well be the sheep. What determines your animagus form is your true personality. If one is noble and brave, a lion is one possibility, but it could also very well be another animal with the same qualities. It all varies. You could potentially even simply become a sea cucumber." He said with a wink.

He swallowed a sip of water before moving on. "Transfiguring into ones animagus form requires a wand or vocalised intention, which is why it requires a lot of practice to get to that point. Once mastered it shouldn't come with too many difficulties. A person transfigured into their animagus form are still able to control their thoughts. Though they cannot speak, as you saw when I barked to get your attention earlier. But we take on the advantages that the animal has. For example if your animagus is a bird then you'll be able to fly, unless you're a kiwi bird, in which case, tough luck. The only way that you can distinguish an animagus from others of that species is through telltale signs based on the human form." Professor Pirrip explained, glancing around to see if his students were still with him. There was plenty more information he could get into but there wasn't any time for that. "Let us finish there for today and continue next lesson. Please copy down the homework on the board behind me before you leave. Class dismissed."

Roleplay the lesson for full marks. Homework: Write about one or two animals you think your animagus form could be. Doesn't have to be long, between 50-100 words is fine. Additional Extra Credit: Take notes on the lesson.

Rose sighed as she entered the classroom, “every time with that dog thing,” she muttered really not amused. She shook her head and headed towards the back of the room to take up residence on one of the desks that would put her further away from the professor so she could pretend to pay attention. School just was not her forte and she really didn’t care all the much about it if she was honest. She had to admit though that the idea of turning into an animal at will was kind of cool, though she wasn’t about to admit that to anyone or they might think she was actually interested in the classes and she so wasn’t. As soon as the class ended she headed out of the room so she could go for a fly.

Lumos held in the chuckle when the dog barked, he figured they were all probably used to it by now, since it was pretty simple to see how it was going, and once they started talking about animagi, he was pretty sure he knew why the professor was suddenly a dog for all of the classes. They’d all known he was an animagus, at least this year, he didn’t think that had been true last year, but he hadn’t really been paying all that much attention honestly. The debate about registration made him pause, he supposed he could see the reason behind it, but he wasn’t sure if he fully agreed with it. He wondered if this was one of those things that people would just disagree on because he didn’t really see why they should be registered. Well, that wasn’t true either because if you were an unregistered animagus you could do almost anything and no one would be able to prove it was you, that’s what happened with Peter Pettigrew isn’t it? He wondered why they never learned about him in classes. The lesson ended not long after and Lumos headed out.

Susie shrugged. Weird thing to care about, she thought, as she passed Rose and sat down. If she could turn into a border collie whenever she wanted, she'd probably spend all day running around the gardens, jumping on people, and napping in the sun - just like Blaze used to. She missed that dog. She took out her book and started taking notes. Given that she struggled with normal transfiguration spells, becoming an animagus was probably off the cards for her. Oh, well. She'd probably be a sea cucumber anyway. Susie giggled at that. When she was finished, she packed up and headed out.

Lilith looked at the Professor in his border collie form and gave a small smile and nod of greeting as she found her place in the classroom. She still found it quite fascinating how the man turned from a man to a dog, but knowing the process and how he'd found it made it even more impressive to her. Taking a seat Lilith let out a small laugh as the Professor dog barked at the class, that was one way to get the students attention for sure. Feeling a surge of excitement at the mention of Animagi Lilith felt a smile tug at the ends of her lips. This had been the reason the third year had recently sought out Professor Pirrip and finally having a full lesson on it had her on the edge of her seat.

Though most of the things being said weren't news to her Lilith made sure to note everything down. She'd done a lot of reading on the subject outside of classes, but she still wanted to make sure she got everything important down. Not feeling exactly disappointed about not being able to pick your animagi, that was one of the things she'd read about before, Lilith still felt a sense of apprehension. What if you became and animagus and your animagi was a cockroach? Or something just as daunting? Though that was part of trusting the process she supposed. By the end of the lesson Lilith felt like there was still so much more she would have loved to know, would have loved to learn but she wasn't dissatisfied at all. Quite the opposite. She stayed behind for a bit to make sure her notes were neat, adding a few pointers and then started on her homework.

Homework
For my Animagi form if I ever got one I'd think something loyal like maybe a wolf or a swan. Though a rabbit would be fun too. Honestly as long as it's not a cockroach or something like that it's fine. I would hate to be a roach and be squished by accident. Then again something small could be excellent too, great hiding opportunities and all that.

- Animagus is a witch or wizard that can transform into an animal at will with wand or vocalisation.
- You aren't able to choose your form yourself, it is something that represents the qualities you already possess.
- Animagus must always be registered with the Ministry.
- You are able to control your thoughts and actions but aren't able to speak, you do however take on your animal forms advantages such as flying as a bird. Though I do wonder if you were to be a fish would you only be able to breathe under water? I should look that one up.

Winnie walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in the room. Her gaze moved up to the professor at the front of the room as the man got started. She nodded to what he said, listening eagerly as he talked about the animagus and what that was. She was pretty curious and pretty keen to read about it, though had no real desire to do it herself. The lecture itself wasn’t too long and she took notes from what the professor was saying. She took a note of the homework and then she headed out of the room.
