Third Years, Lesson Five: Lecture on Animagi
Edward started the lesson as a border collie which shouldn't have come as such of a surprise to the third years this time. When he was ready to start, he barked at the class to get their attention. But, of course, he couldn’t teach like this. The professor moved to the front of his desk and transformed back into his usual self, standing in front of the class. "Good morning third years," He started his lesson, "Today we'll be discussing Animagi. As you just saw, an animagus is a witch or wizard who can transform into an animal at will, a choice made with deliberate intent. Let me tell you first hand that learning to be an animagus is a lengthy and extremely arduous ordeal to undergo. Once a witch or wizard has successfully become an animagus they must register with the Ministry of Magic." He explained, "The registration of animagus forms has sparked significant debate. Critics argue that it invades personal privacy, as the information is made public, and could expose individuals to scrutiny or even danger. On the other hand, proponents emphasise that we live in a world of endless magical possibilities, and knowing who can transform and what specific markings they have helps maintain safety and accountability." Edward shrugged, moving on from the debate.
He glanced around at his students to gauge their attention and allow any to catch up on notes before he continued. "An animgus is not able to choose their own animal form. Want to be a clever border collie? Tough luck, your animagus form might very well be the sheep. What determines your animagus form is your true personality. If one is noble and brave, a lion is one possibility, but it could also very well be another animal with the same qualities. It all varies. You could potentially even simply become a sea cucumber." He said with a wink.
He swallowed a sip of water before moving on. "Transfiguring into ones animagus form requires a wand or vocalised intention, which is why it requires a lot of practice to get to that point. Once mastered it shouldn't come with too many difficulties. A person transfigured into their animagus form are still able to control their thoughts. Though they cannot speak, as you saw when I barked to get your attention earlier. But we take on the advantages that the animal has. For example if your animagus is a bird then you'll be able to fly, unless you're a kiwi bird, in which case, tough luck. The only way that you can distinguish an animagus from others of that species is through telltale signs based on the human form." Professor Pirrip explained, glancing around to see if his students were still with him. There was plenty more information he could get into but there wasn't any time for that. "Let us finish there for today and continue next lesson. Please copy down the homework on the board behind me before you leave. Class dismissed."
Roleplay the lesson for full marks. Homework: Write about one or two animals you think your animagus form could be. Doesn't have to be long, between 50-100 words is fine. Additional Extra Credit: Take notes on the lesson.
