Indianna Grace Lee was seldom one for school social events, it had never exactly been her scene. Particularly at Beauxbatons whilst all the other beautiful young girls stressed over every blemish, applicators at the ready, Indi had sat chin-in-palm and sighed in aloofness. But this wasn’t France anymore, this was somewhere half the world away and Indianna too felt miles away from the person she had once been. The seventeen year old engaged her reflection, those hazel eyes intensified with a dusting of silver shadow and lick of liner glinted back at her in the most peculiar of ways. There was something more comely about the exotic girl as of late, something that recapitulated her gradual transition into a young woman. But the change wasn’t merely a coat of foundation deep, it reverberated throughout every smile that struck her, every laugh that blossomed from her. Every time she felt herself falling an inch more comfortably into her stride. Unlike Beauxbatons, Hogwarts New Zealand had captured an essence of the person she had always wanted to be, bottled it up until finally unstoppering it for the world to breathe in. Indianna’s only regret was not having transferred here sooner. Because somewhere amidst the arms of Sam, the comfort of her new friends and in the anxious anticipation of their futures, the girl had learnt how to love herself as well.

After sweeping another coat of cherry red lipstick across her pout once more, Indianna tucked the case away safely into her clutch and sucked in a nervous breath. It was the good kind of nervous though, the one that drove the butterflies in her stomach wild and made her feet itch enough to want to dance all over the place. Good thing she was going to a dance, huh? Her dorm mates had left with their respective dates and friends not all that long ago. But Indi had wanted to linger back for a moment so that she and Sam could have all the stairways to themselves on the way down to the ground floor. As much she had come to love the enthusiastic assemblage of the student body, for a school as vast as Hogwarts New Zealand, the time her and Sam got to spend completely alone together was often surprisingly fleeting. As she slipped the last of her essentials into her clutch, Indianna gave herself a once over and skimmed her hands down the bodice of her exquisite dress. She had to hand it to her grandmother – she certainly knew stunning when she saw it. The detail was intimate, efflorescence with a whole store of mediums and the fitting adhered to her curves so well that Indi was beginning to wonder if she’d even be capable of dancing tonight. But there was a way, there was always a way if all else failed.

A whole year she had been dating Sam. It was a wild and wonderful thought to entertain her mind as she set each step across of the common room, careful not to catch her heels on the delicate train of her dress. And what was even crazier? Nothing had changed between them. She was still as enraptured by him as ever, and she could only hope that it was termed vice versa as well. He knew how to make her laugh, he knew how to make her smile, he knew exactly how to make her feel better when she was down. And the degree of comfortableness she felt whenever she was with him, Indi had never thought it would be possible to achieve. But here she was, a year later and most wonderfully surprised. Slowly, ever so gracefully, Indianna took her first steps out into the hallways, her heart already bracing itself for the beat it was sure to skip.
