The Sorting Ceremony

Heather was very impressed by the grandeur of the castle. She had heard from her cousins about how incredible Hogwarts was but it was nothing compared to seeing it in real life. The only thing she hated was the waiting, she wanted to know where she belonged. What house had the most people in who thought like her. Being on her own her whole life had suited her so far because she liked her own company and she liked her independence but she was also looking forward to seeing what Hogwarts had to offer. She waited in line for the Sorting Hat to call her name and after what seemed like forever she was called up to the front and she sat on the stool with the hat placed on her head and waited for the verdict.

"Life is full of waiting! Waiting to be sorted, waiting to graduate, waiting to find that one witch or wizard that will make all the waiting worth while... ahem... I guess I could help make this round of waiting a little less long, though - SLYTHERIN!"

Nora pushed through the wave of students in front of her to get in the front, she's not letting herself be thrown at the back of the line when she's too important. Although, ignoring her cousin who stayed at the back. Yes, he is a Maxwell but does he have something that Nora has? Nope! for Nora, he's just a distant cousin of hers not like Teagan - who's really her distant cousin - who has a title and belongs with her. As the doors to the vast Great hall opened, Nora was first in line, smiling as they walked inside. Spotting her cousin, she waved at her. The Maxwell's has been in Ravenclaw for centuries and the tradition never break, she was thinking why her family are that studious. Nora was not into books and would ditch a copy of Pride and Prejudice just to go to the mall. As the line of first year students stop in front of a podium, they were greeted by an introduction from a smart looking lady and the fact the hat sang horribly, she needs a visit from the ear doctor over the holidays. Once the sorting started, Nora waited for her turn. It was a long list, there was hat stalls that took a while and as the names went from A's, now comes to the M's. Her name called, she held her head up walking toward the stool and sat on it while the hat was placed on her head. Do you think tradition matters, Hat? Because I don't think so. Tradition tends to change, isn't it? And I'm going to prove that my family isn't bookish boring people. It will start with me. Now, pick! Nora crossed her legs together, impatient and worried the hat might release friction on her hair.

"Traditions matter, but being in a certain house is hardly a tradition - perhaps a trend, and as you expected - you'll be bucking that trend in SLYTHERIN!"

Although Tuesday was surrounded by a sea of students, this was the first time in her entire life that Tuesday was going to be alone without her sisters. It was a frightening concept but she was up for the challenge. She had tried to make friends on the train ride here to Hogwarts and was now excited to see what House she would be sorted into because it would help her make friends faster. Her mother had gone to Hogwarts Scotland so she had been told a little about the different houses so she knew what her options were. She watched the Sorting Hat make its choices aloud in front of everyone and wondered whether it knew what it was doing. Some student's faces after their announced House said they didn't agree with the Hat's choice while others looked relieved, so when Tuesday's name was called, she wasn't sure whether or not to trust the Hat. There was no other way to be sorted though, so she figured there was nothing she could do but wait and see if it could see what kind of person she was just by trying it on.

"It really matters very little if students agree with me - how many eleven year olds do you know who know themselves particularly well? You're still discovering, and I'm here to help you on that journey. For you, it begins in GRYFFINDOR!"

Lauren felt like she was in one of the fairytales her Mum used to read to her when she was a child. The idea of magic still seemed so unbelievable to her, and she couldn't believe that she was here at Hogwarts rather than preparing to go back to school in the Muggle world. As Lauren entered the Great Hall, her eyes widened and her voice trailed off. The young girl turned her head frantically, trying to look at everything at once. She first noticed the older students spread among four tables who stared at the first years, then she noticed the floating candles, finally noticing the ceiling which appeared to look like the sky outside. She had read about what Hogwarts looked like in Hogwarts a History of course, and so had her parents, but it was still amazing to actually see it in person.

Lauren stopped with the other first years at the podium, and listened carefully to the woman she assumed was the Headmistress. As the Headmistress spoke, colourful banners unfurled, each representing a Hogwarts house. 'Woah', Lauren couldn't help but whisper, amazed at the magic. Suddenly, the Headmistress told the first years that they would soon be sorted by a hat, which confused Lauren a bit, but then the Sorting Hat opened its mouth and sang. At the end of the song, Lauren quickly applauded, a wide grin on her face. She felt like she definitely belonged here, that she was home.

Lauren waited patiently for her turn to be sorted, glad that her surname was near the beginning as she wanted to be sorted as quickly as possible. She couldn't wait to officially begin her Hogwarts school life. After what seemed like ages to the young girl, her name was finally called out.

Edwards, Lauren!

Unlike some of the others before her, Lauren was not nervous at all. She was just excited. She confidently stepped out from among the group, and walked up to the stool. The hat was placed on her head, and she waited for the hat to sort her, a wide grin still on her face. She couldn't wait!

Henrietta marched into the Great Hall with the other first years, keeping her arms crossed over her chest to keep from touching anyone else as she liked her personal space, though it was hard considering how eager everyone was to see around them and get closer to the front. She glared around at them all, half of them not even worthy of stepping foot into a school to learn their trades and secrets, but Henrietta had to bide her time until she could do something about it. The eleven year old waited for her name to be called and stepped up, sitting on the stool and waited for the hat to get on with it.

"Ravenclaw!"

Finlay was uncharacteristically quiet as she watched her fellow first years sorted into their houses. The young witch had run her mouth the whole train ride here. For the most part she had been overwhelmed with excitement but she had needed a distraction, she couldn't bear the thought of her poor father alone. In the sea of black robes, however, it was all she could think of. Did he know how to be alone? Did she?

Finlay twisted her dirty blonde ponytail around her fist as the Headmistress moved into the middle of the alphabet. It was difficult to keep herself from musing anxiously, over and over again, which house she would be sorted into. Her mother had been a Gryffindor; bold, courageous, hot-headed as well. Her father fancied himself a Ravenclaw if he'd have been a wizard but she thought him more a Hufflepuff deep down. A smirk curled the corner of her lips at the thought.

"Scott, Finlay"

Arching her brows at the sound of her name, the young witch drew a deep breath in. And out. And squeezed past the few rows of students before her to make her way towards the Headmistress. As she plopped herself upon the stool, she could not help the smile that crept onto her lips.

"No doubt about it. You're a Gryffindor!"

Ermolai-Pyotr could barely contain his excitement as he considered how much fun this would all be. Of course, he was here to 'learn', but it never hurt to make a few friends along the way. He didn't know what house he wanted specifically, though he knew that Ravenclaw was what his dad had (and naturally what he wanted his son to be in, but Ermolai-Pyotr wasn't so sure). He didn't have a preference beyond actually getting sorted, though his father had assured him that it wasn't possible (to his knowledge) to not have a house to go to. That was only a momentary comfort for the young boy as his name was called (pronounced correctly, much to his surprise and happiness) and he was shoving himself through the rather small crowd of first years. He was, after all V, that was rather far down on the list by now.

Perching himself quite happily on a stool, Ermolai-Pyotr put his game face on and got to work on looking as chill as a cucumber, looking forward to not falling off the stool mid-sort (he held the seat just to make sure) and finding out where he would spend the next seven years.

"Don't worry. I find a house for everyone I get placed on, and you'll be no exception. Now let me see...oh, I've got it. You're a Gryffindor!"

Ethan tried not to look too excited as he filed into the Great Hall where he was soon going to be sorted. He felt like he had dreamed of this moment forever and secretly feared it would never come due to his family being full of many squibs. But it was actually happening. He watched eagerly as everyone ahead of him got sorted and grew anxious and impatient, wondering where he was going to end up, but he kept his cool as he waited for his turn. When his name was called out, Ethan walked toward the front and nodded at the Headmistress in greeting before he took his seat on the stool for the hat to be placed on his head.

Koa was not interested at all in being here. He wasn't good with crowds, and even though his siblings were here, he wasn't exactly happy about attending the school. He would have rathered staying at home, but he didn't make the decisions. Almost trying to physically fold in on himself, the young Howard stood motionless with his arms cross tightly on his chest and waited patiently for his name to be called. He doubted he'd have too long to wait simply because he was H, and kept to himself as much as possible whilst time passed. He wasn't the first of his family to be sorted, and witnessed Henrietta's sorting in silence, though gave her a nod of acknowledgement in way of a congratulations. He followed her, his name spurring him into movement as he closed the space between himself and the Sorting Hat.

The young boy sat down and crossed his ankles as he waited for the magical hat to be placed on his head. It looked old, and rather in need of a few repairs, but he trusted the magic it had to place him somewhere he'd 'belong', though he had his doubts as to whether such a place in this school existed. He closed his eyes as his sight was obscured by the hat, and waited.

"You'd do alright in Slytherin, but I don't think you'd reach your full potential there. The better house for you is Ravenclaw!"

The ride to Hogwarts had been short and sweet for Lucia who was ready for school to start. First she had to be sorted into a house and get settled into the castle. The energy from the other first years was contagious and soon she felt herself getting giddy with excitement but she tried to contain herself as she filed into the room. She looked around at the vastness of the great hall, alive with floating candles and chatter from the older students and then of course there was the wide open sky on the enchanted ceiling above them. Lucia stared up above her, watching the stars swirl and turn as the earth rotated. Her attention was pulled back to the front of the room as the Headmistress came out and told them what to do. Lucia nodded her head in understanding, though there was no real need for any sort of response, and simply waited until her name was called. After the first few names she quickly caught on to the hat's powers so she began wondering where she'd end up. She also wondered if the hat would take long for her or speak to her like it did to some while others simply got told their new house.

Finally "Orbon, Lucia" was called and the dark-haired girl grinned as she made her way to the front, glancing up at the staff table momentarily but before she could find Eduardo she was ushered onto the stool. Lucia sat down and gripped the edges of the stool in anticipation and waited to see what the hat would say.

Soonkyu watched as her brother mingled with other students. She couldn't wait for the number of people who would be mistaking them for twins this year. Even their mother couldn't wait a couple more months so she didn't have to share her friends with Isaac. Kimmy had settled into Hogwarts now, and knew she would be waiting to see where her siblings were placed. Soonjyu didn't care much for the houses, as long as she was able to access all students she would be able to create a good scene.
Her other sister had attended Beauxbatons, but there was no way Soonkyu would be found in a school so "delicate". No, this was the real world and real things happened. It was up to everyone to make sure they were ready to deal with it. As Isaac was sorted into Ravenclaw, she prayed to herself that she wouldn't follow suit. She had been compared to her siblings for long enough, and she was ready to make her own mark.
Taking a seat underneath the sorting hat, she awaited her verdict. She didn't particularly want to be in any of the houses, but she supposed one would have to take her.

Caleb strolled slowly into the Great Hall, looking amazed at the sight of it. He admired a lot of things in the Great Hall, including the magic. His's eyes lit up like a child in a candy store. He paused for a moment to allow eveything to sink in because he had only heard stories about Hogwarts from his brother Zachery. After some time his name was finally called out,

"Evans, Caleb"

And without hesitation cause his legs started to get rather tired, Caleb walked towards the stool. He remembered his brother telling him that he was nervous when he was being sorted. Caleb could feel that all eyes where on him as he walked to the stool, which was something he didn't like. He waited for the woman to put the old hat on his head. He really wanted it to be over so everyone wouldn't stare at him and he could eat something.

"Don't worry. They've all been here at one time or another. You won't be up here long anyway. I know just the house for you: Ravenclaw!"

Isaac followed his classmates like cattle walking into a slaughter house, and his eyes watched as they were seperated from their friends and families, scattered around the hall and forced to befriend strangers. What a pointless waste of time. Why were there houses in a school anyway, everyone was trying to achieve a similar goal. All houses succeeded in was to sterotype students and mold them into a scheme that would be of most use to government. His uncle was a perfect example. Told he was brave so he had gone off to fight, only to come home injured. How would he have served if he had been placed in Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff?

Isaac's name was called, solemly. Clearly the Professor had been at their job for too long. He took a seat on the stool, sighing. Best get this over with quickly.

"Oh, you think this is a waste of time, huh? I'll be waiting for you to come seek me out in a few years and thank me for placing you in your house. Your curiosity and interest in questioning the system makes it clear that you're a..Ravenclaw!"

The eleven year old was ectastic at the idea of being sorted into her very own Hogwarts house. The first in her family, it was a proud moment. She wandered into the Great Hall with the other first years, delighted at the sight. There were so many beautiful things! The candles, the food! Her hands clasped together with nerves as she watched the other begin the sorting process, and her heart began to beat quickly in her chest. Of course she could handle this. She would be fine.

When her name was called, one of the first, she stepped forward, climbing the steps to her fate. She would be writing to her family the moment they were free from their introductions, and she couldn't wait to find out what colour pen she would be doing so in.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Upon hearing her name, the corner's of Avery's lips twisted into a smirk which quickly fell as she looked down to the floor while she walked towards the stool. She was indeed eager to see which house she would be placed in considering the variations and inconsistencies throughout her family. There was no true legacy of one house over another and she could barely imagine what house she would be in, only that she was utterly unlike her brothers so could not imagine being placed in the same house with either of them. As the youngest Woodlock wanted to make a name for herself separately she really did not care too much if she was on her own or shared a house with them. She fully expected that it wouldn't be long before she took Hogwarts by storm so this was just the first step. So the girl took a seat and smiled tepidly while she looked around the four house tables while the Sorting Hat was placed on her head. She could only hope that this would help her reach her goals.

"You're smart, but it's your ambitious nature that's truly going to lead you to success. There's only one house that will help you achieve your goals: Slytherin!"

Hera walked into the hall and was about to get sorted. It was scary, but she was ready. She wanted this and it was her moment it was special. Somehow her whole life would be decided in this moment. Not that the house meant a lot, but there was a lot of pressure on Hera. The hall was big and there were lots of students to get sorted here. Hera would get sorted somewhere in the middle of this group. It was not that she was nervous, but somehow a weird feeling crept over her. What if the sorting hat, had no clue where to place her. Or that no house fitted her and the judgement was to go home. All these thoughts made her busy and she almost forgot for what she was here for. Her name would soon be called and then it was final. You couldn't exactly switch houses whenever you liked. Then the moment came and her name was called. Pourroulis, Hera. Hera walked up to the chair and sat down.

The fact that Ulrich's school had changed from Hogwarts Scotland to Hogwarts New Zealand in the last few months matter little to him. A school was a school, he would still learn what he needed to learn in New Zealand and no doubt he would still have the same experience he would have had at Scotland. The proximity of his uncle was also a bonus, family was important. Of course the proximity was even closer for his first semester as uncle Alaric was temping at the school. That would certainly be an interesting experience. Ulrich had long heard stories from his family about Hogwarts Scotland and so far the New Zealand school seemed the same, at least based on the descriptions, so he didn't see why his mother had objected so much. After all he would still be home for every holiday, nothing really had changed for anyone.

He made his way into the Great hall with the rest of the new first years and stood in the crowd. Ulrich didn't expected to be called anytime soon and sure enough the group around him thined considerably before the Professor came to him. Once his name was read out he stepped up to the stool and waited for the hat to be lowered on his head. Ulrich hadn't given much though to his house, he knew what houses his father and uncle had been in and Ravenclaw didn't sound like the house for him, but only the hat would decide.

"You're quite right. Ravenclaw isn't the right house for you. Not at all. For you, it better be...Slytherin!"

The Canadian born young girl wasn't that nervous anymore as she stood in front of hundreds of students at the dining hall where the sorting ceremony was always held per her aunt who's the Professor for higher year Potions. On the train ride coming here, Venice was worried about her little sister but of course, her aunt had hired a long term nanny for her. It wasn't easy either as they have to hire someone from the wizarding world who are willing to do long term. The worlds are very different and Venice grew up from both. As the ceremony started, her heart skipped a beat but she calmed after that. Although, none of her family members went to Hogwarts Scotland and New Zealand, her aunt Sydney didn't mind whichever house she got put in.

The names were descending quite rapidly as only a few people got the longest sorting ever. Once her last name was called, Venice glance up to her aunt, she smiled to her and she rewarded her with a sweet smile. Walking up toward the stool, Venice sat and as the hat sat upon her head she closed her eyes and imagined her little sister. She was the only reason Venice is here and no one else. In a few years, Vienna would be sitting here as well, getting sorted.
