The Gables

Tin snuck around the house hoping not to get caught. He was under specific instructions to knock Maeve out so it appeared like she was having a bit of Amnesia. Also he was allowed to kill the man named Patrick if he'd get's in the way. He looked around the kitchen and began to arange things around so that things would start falling on top of their heads. Tin had to admit seeing their wands made him want to rush in, grab and dash. He would get another wand... someday!

Maeve breezed into the kitchen smiling to herself. Her headache had passed and she was nicely relieved. On the other hand however, she couldn't believe she had drawn a complete blank on Christmas at home. She sat down at the large table with her face in her hands racking her brains. But nothing!
She stood up and walked to one of the cupboards to get a mug - Patrick was upstairs doing his last minute packing before heading to Hogwarts.
A nice cup of tea might do the trick she thought. She was just about to call out to Essie and Patrick to see if they wanted a cup too, when on opening the cupboard something came flying out of it and thumped her on the head.
She knew she let out a yelp of surprise and pain, she knew she must have stood there for a moment before the world seemed to go black...

"Maeve are you alright dear? I thought I heard..." Essie walked into the kitchen and saw Maeve lying in a heap on the floor.
"Oh my word! Patrick... Patrick!" she called out, running to Maeve's side and lifting her head up from the floor.
"Maeve...Maeve, can you hear me?" she said to her, "Patrick come down would you?"

Tin couldn't help but supress a giggle, this girl was a beacon for getting head injuries he thought to himself, Then he had a devilish Idea, If he could only distract the others he might be able to get his wand back! Sneaking around so that nobody would notice Tin opened up all the drawers and made all the clothes start flying around outside.

Patrick walked into the kitchen hurriedly, seeing Essie holding Maeve in her arms. He knelt down too and took his wand out.
"What happened?" he asked her. From the corner of his eye he noticed something a miss outside. He turned and could have sworn he saw clothes flying about.
"Essie take care of whatever is going on outside will you? One of your hex charms seems to be running amuck!" Patrick turned his attention back to Maeve.
He flourished his wand over her, reviving her instantly.
"What happened to you?" he smiled at her.

After seeing that his plan wasn't working to well Tin decided to leave, he was kinda mad he didn't get his wand back but was willing to let it slide to day as he lit a small fire in the middle of one of the bedrooms. CRACK! he dissapeared.

Patrick helped Maeve to her feet and led her to a chair at the table.
"Accio vas of unda!"
A glass of water was filled and brought to his hand, he held it up to Maeve to drink.
Then turned his head at a funny smell.
It smelt like...smoke...
"What is going on around here?" he yelled as he took the stairs two at a time to reach the room that had magically caught on fire.
"Aquamenti!" he called waving his wand and dousing the flames. The fire had been small so he had been lucky.
He frowned - something just did not seem right but he couldn't put his finger on it.
He would send Essie up to take care of the mess while he would try taking care of his sister.

A FEW DAYS AFTER THE INCIDENT;
Patrick has left for HNZ.

Maeve was fed up of feeling so wretched.
"Essie I think we should go shopping. What do you think?" Maeve put on her reddest robe brushed her long black hair until it gleamed, picked up her bag and smiled at her friend.
"Are you coming?"

    Deat Sis and Essie,

I seriously didn't know what I was leaving myself in for. It's so busy
here, really. Every girl within a miles radius of HNZ has some ailment.
Mind you but Ace has been up here twice to me. Aw, she 's fine nothing
major you know. Broken nose and that.
Apparantly and dont tell her I told you but she had started dating that Blane
boy, but now they are finished and he actually came to apologise to me. Very
strange altogether. The school is gearing up for the Halloween Festivities, Ace
would have loved for you to do her a costume but can't I suppose. She's
making you a birthday card anyway but I think that was suppose to be a
surprise, so act all surprised when you get it. Am sending this by Freckles.
Are you still hanging around with Silverback? Think you could do a lot better
    Maeve I really do.

But that's just your brother talking, we should all get together at
    Brightstone at the weekend maybe.

                        Send word if you can,

                                      Patrick

Esmerelda pottered about her cottage in a disturbed mood. The letter from Patrick had been left on the table and Maeve had replied that they would love to meet up with them. Essie had waited for another reply letting them know the time and which day. But, none had arrived. She had expected this from Patrick who at this time of year would have been terribly busy in the hospital wing.

But, Andromeda... she thought the girl would have been delighted to see her mother, even briefly over the Halloween festival especially as it was Maeve's birthday. Of course there were the festivities at the castle, the child would most likely have gotten caught up in all of that it being her first year there. Essie had made a birthday cake for Maeve, well magically created it at any rate. Hoping that this might cheer Maeve up when she returned from Ireland.

It hadn't, Maeve had returned with a look about her and a small box. Glowing for lack of a better word, Essie would have said. Maeve she knew had obviously fallen for the charms of Luxen Silverback all over again. The poor girl and very silly woman, Esmerelda sighed. Essie had watched her get dressed up for the Bleak Street party, it was like watching a young school girl she had been that excited. It will only lead to heartbreak, she mused. Only heartbreak.

Time was getting on now, Maeve had left hours ago. The night was drawing in fast. Esmerelda looked out of her bedroom window at the full moon and smiled. It really was a beautiful Halloween night, she thought to herself.

Maeve apparated outside the gate to The Gables and walked the rest of the way, her head was splitting open now with the pain. She pushed open the door and staggered up to her room, collapsing on her bed she took her wand out of her bag and pointed it carefully at her head saying the minor healing charm to make the pain go. It worked but the terrible flashes still came. They were so horrific that Maeve screamed clutching her head in turmoil from them.

Esmerelda heard the scream and shot up out of her bed. She fumbled about in the dark for her wand. "LUMOS" she called lighting her way as she ran to Maeve's room.
She pushed open the door and saw Maeve lying on her bed clutching her head and screaming.

"Dear, goodness me what is the matter?" she ran to the womans side and looked on in fear.
"Maeve? what is happening?"

"Essie, make it stop. Please make it stop" she called out, "I keep seeing the most horrible images. They're hurting me".

She cried in pain, Maeve did not mean the images she was seeing were physically hurting her, she meant that the last terrible images she saw broke her heart and had emotionally scarred her. She reached out her hands to Essie.

"Help me please" the images were too much and Maeve collapsed in a dead faint.

Esmerelda Smickett watched as her dear friend seemed to be mentally battling something. She reached for Maeve in return as Maeve asked for her help.
There was definitly magic afoot here, Essie thought. She picked up her wand and shut down the jinxes on her house. She held her friend close to her and apparated to the only place she knew she would recieve the type of help necessary.
St. Mungos.

Tin had watched everything, It was his duty to watch Maeve for signs like this and so he would have to inform the master, walking over to the Gables he activated a Pot's and Pans spell he'd used before causing things within the house to start to act a bit crazy. Tin giggled as he CRACKED out of there to report to his master.

Tin returned and went up to the Bathroom avoiding the spell that was still active in the mean time, looking for some hair was essential to the master plot and he had the job of findind them, finally he saw a comb with a few hairs, Making sure they were not the woman's hair he vanished on the spot without a trace that he'd been there a second time.

Esmerelda flew directly to her home and changed slowly back into her human shape outside her front door. The markings of her glasses resembling the wide eyes of her owl shape, indeed even her hair colouring was the same as the feathers she had when she was an owl. She let herself into the house and cried in alarm.

It looked like her house had gone mad, bewitched even. All of her pots and pans were going hay wire. Standing firmly and waving her wand in their direction she cast a freezing spell on them. Then walked over to pluck one out of the air.
"Now what in the blazes happened here?" remembering it wasn't the first time either, perhaps she was in need of a complete set of new pots and pans she thought.
She cast another spell unfreezing them but reverting them back to motionless kitchen ware before sitting down and calling for her kettle to boil. This had indeed been a very very long night and day. She would tidy the house and get herself along to Mungos as quickly as she could.

1st Week of December

Esmerelda watched in amazement as a tawny owl played havoc outside with her scarecrow. She walked out to shoo it away when she saw that he had a note attached. It had been a very tiring and trying few weeks. Maeve in hospital, Andromeda becoming a werewolf and her first changing, Christmas shopping that went haywire. Esmerelda hoped this was not more bad news.
She called the owl to her and unclipped the note. She read in neat swirly elaborate writing that could only mean it was from her daughter...

Dear Mom,

I do hope all is well and that you aren't too lonely there. I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to write to you before but as you can imagine everything here is a bit insane to be honest. We are still trying to climatise ourselves to the heat here in California but it takes some doing. The new job is brilliant but very demanding on both myself and Frank. So as you can imagine, Harrison has two choices for Christmas either to stay at Durmstrang or go to you. Please write and let him know if he can come over he really would like to . Thanks a million Mum.
Much love

Catherine

Essie was well and truly annoyed with her daughter. This was so like her, flying off half way around the world and forgetting all about her son. Esmerelda was furious but accio'd her quill and parchment and began to write to her grandson immediately.
Dearest Harrison,

Of course you may spend the holidays here, stay for as long as you want. And perhaps come the summer time you could stay as well?
It will be nice to have you here truly, I have missed you and can't wait to catch up on all the news.

With all my love

Gran

Esmerelda folded it up and clipped back onto the owl. She sent it on it's way and decided she had better get the basement room ready for him.

Dear Gran,

Got your note and thought I better reply straight away seeing as we are finishing up soon. Have a break this weekend and some friends are heading to New Zealand permission and everything as that's where they are from. We've finished our exams and just waiting to go to Beauxbatons for the Ball. Yuck!
Would it be ok if I came for the weekend, that way I could bring some of my stuff and the rest when I come the following week.

Oh, yeah thanks for inviting me and I would love to come. Bet mom put you up to it huh? lol only kidding Gran, I know you want me to come as well.

let me know if this weekend is good then.

love too

Harrison

Esmerelda was delighted and wroted him back immediately letting him know he could come and stay whenever he wanted, that his room was now already and there were a few people she wanted him to meet.
Esmerelda sent the letter off then went into where Maeve was sitting in the kitchen and told her the great news. It would be a great Christmas after all, she told her friend. If they couldn't have one child here at least they would have another and if everything went well perhaps they could meet up with Andromeda in Brightstone over Christmas indeed definitly this weekend. Essie wanted to show off her wonderful grandson and couldn't wait to do it.

Harrisons Arrival:

When Harrison did arrive from Durmstrang he walked towards The Gables and smiled as he stood outside the old cottage. This was his first time here but it looked exactly like the cottage his gran had had back in Scotland. If he didn't know any better he would have said she magically moved her cottage and its orchard and vegetable plot right here to New Zealand. He knew his gran was eccentric but didn't think she was quite that bad yet.

He lifted his broom up under his arm, carrying his large bag that was lightened considerable by the featherlight charm. He walked up to the door and knocked loudly before entering. Harrison smiled as he stepped in dropping his bag and leaning his broom against the wall.

"Hey Gran!" he beamed.

"Harry!" Essie called out, "My dear boy you made it!"
She gave him a huge hug then stood back to look at him.
"My you have grown would you look how tall you've gotten!" she smiled proudly at him, "come in, come in and shut that door behind you".

She guided him through to the kitchen and clapped her hands together delighted he had made it at last.
"Why don't you go and put your stuff away in your room and I'll get some tea and something to eat on for you.Alright?" she beamed again giving him another affectionate hug before she turned to the kettle and ordered it to boil.

Holiday Season at the Gables:

May2007-----122.jpg

The Gables was a lovely old house, a country cottage as Esmerelda loved to describe it. Esmerelda decorated it perfectly for the Yuletide season. Wreaths and sprigs of mistletoe everywhere and a beautiful 7ft Christmas tree in the entrance hall. This was going to be a perfect Christmas. She had asked Maeve if she could send out an invitation on her behalf and thankfully Maeve had agreed. It would be nice to have another mouth to feed, goodness knows without Patrick here to eat the most of it and Andromeda, it left only Harrison to work wonders on the turkey. Esmerelda had a good appetite but surmised that cooking all day long and therefore tasting as she went would decrease that healthy appetite somewhat and Maeve... well Maeve ate like a starling! Skin and bones she was!

Esmerelda sat down at the kitchen table and wrote the invitation. Wondering then what in the world her grandson was up to out in the orchard. Once the invite was ready, she called Maeve's owl and slipped it into it's beak.
"Off you go then!" she smiled and sat back working out place settings for the day and worse still she knew she would have to start sorting out a place for Andromeda to stay for her summer visits.

CHRISTMAS AT THE GABLES

Esmerelda loved the swatches of green garlands she had festooned about the cottage. Mistltoe, Ivy and holly were tastefully woven into garlands running up the stair bannister and around the fireplace. The table was set in a deep red tablecloth that hung just over the edges. On this lay a forest green runner that ran the length of the table. The center piece was of red and white berries wrapped around a large candle. Each place setting had a matching place mat of forest green and napkins, plates and goblets plated in gold, even the cutlery was as ornate.

Essie had gone to alot of trouble for the Yuletide Feast, she was so happy that her grandson was here and delighted that Luxen and Maeve would be spending it with them as well.

The food was nearly ready, drinks were all set to go. All she needed now were her guests.
