Hemi was taking the stairs three steps at a time, the jump to each step was large but necessary, he was in a hurry after all. The Gryffindor needed to get back to his Common Room before curfew which starts in less than one minute. Hemi had never been out after curfew before, he didn't know what happened. Would he be locked out by the Fat Lady and have to sleep in the corridor?

He was almost there, Hemi thought he might be able to make it, when he felt a dreadful sinking sensation. He was forced to stop and completely lost his balance. Regaining balance on uneven footing confused him further, "What the?!" His foot was gone; swallowed whole by the staircase. Hemi's first reaction was to pull his foot free from the sinking step but that didn't work so he was out of ideas. He checked his watch to confirm that curfew had now passed. If he couldn't get his own foot free then the first year really would be sleeping on the stairwell tonight.

Being out after curfew was not something Lawrence had planned on. However, it had somehow become like that between reading in the library, and hanging out with his sister. He hadn't had the time to really communicate with other students - even the boys he shared a room with. If he were perfectly honest, it was more the fact that he was doing his best to not interact with them. They all seemed nice, but he was just shy of 6 feet tall. He had long, dark hair. He wasn't exactly the least intimidating person on the planet. The young boy climbed the stairs with relative ease, however, as his legs were strong from years of hiking with his family. The steps were not exactly the same environment as the hikes that he remembered, but the effort was all the same, really.

The Ravenclaw paused, however, when he saw another student on the stairs ahead of him. Brown eyes narrowing slightly with confusion, he approached the boy silently, and then realised what the issue was. It appeared to be a gag step of some sort. He was glad he had managed to not get caught in one, but it appeared that the Gryffindor had not been so lucky. Not knowing any spells to help, there was only one thing Lawrence could think of.

"Um, hi," he greeted, smiling meekly. Curfew was past, and he really should be getting to Ravenclaw tower as he had even more stairs to climb than the Gryffindor, but leaving him here felt wrong. "I, um... maybe I can help?" Perhaps his strength and size would get the boy out.

Hemi twisted his torso as far as it would go without the use of one leg to see who the voice belonged to behind him. He felt relieved that someone was here to help him, but anxious because he doesn't know them, they might have other intentions. "Oh hello!" Hemi was taken aback, the voice sounded younger than the boys stature. He was much taller and in one of the older years.

"Oh yeah that would be great, the step has swallowed my foot! What's the easiest way to get free?" He asked the older student, he was sure to have seen it before. "I'm Hemi by the way"

Lawrence could see rather clearly that the step had swallowed his foot, but as long as it wasn't appearing to hurt him, he tried to not worry too much. He carefully knelt down and poked the other side of the step, and retracted his finger when it began sinking also. "Okay... so, the entire step seems to be like that." Curiosity sated, he tried to think of ways to get him out. He was as new to magic as anyone in the castle. Whilst his father used magic regularly, so he could name a few spells, Lawrence had no idea how to use the spells he could name, let alone use one to help the Gryffindor out of his tight spot.

"Nice too meet you, Hemi, I'm Lawrence," he said, not bothering with handshakes at a time like this. "Um, I can't really use too many spells, and Lumos and Nox won't help here. But... I could try pulling you out? I'm stronger than I look!"

Hemi was surprised, if Lawrence only knew Lumos then he was a beginner wizard. "Are you a first year like me?" Hemi questioned, showing clear signs of surprise. "Sorry I assumed you were older." Hemi wanted to ask why they were so tall but thought it rude, he'd only just met Lawrence after all.

"Uh do you reckon you're strong enough to pull me out?" Hemi asked, slightly embarrassed to ask that of a stranger, "That could work ey?"

Lawrence went a little red as Hemi realised that he was not an older student. He nodded as response, expecting that this would be a common thing - Imogen received the same fate, he was sure. He smiled slightly though, to let the Gryffindor know that no harm was down, and returned his eyes to the step once more. His foot was rather deep, and the boy had no idea if his strength would get the smaller boy out. But it was worth a try nonetheless.

"I don't know, if I'm honest. Um, but if I can't, I can run up to Ravenclaw Tower and ask an older student." Positioning himself behind the Gryffindor, he grabbed his waist. "Okay, on three? One... two... three!" And he began to pull.

Hemi felt uncomfortable having someone pull him free, but it was the only choice he had, unless he wanted to wait for a group of Ravenclaw's to assess the situation. Hemi shook his head, the less people around the better.

He followed Lawerence's count down then held his breath for the big pull.

It did not take much. On the first pull Hemi's foot became free and the sudden release of pressure sent him flying down the stairs. He landed as a heap at the bottom and had somehow managed to graze his elbow in the process. Other than that, the fall had been relatively soft because he had landed on Lawrence. His attention turned to him.

"Are you okay Lawerence?" He asked, "Thank you for freeing me!" Hemi really was grateful that the boy had been willing to help him out. Now he just had to make sure he returned the favour.

Perhaps pulling from behind had not been the brightest idea. Upon reflection, the Ravenclaw soon realised that it would have been safer to pull up the staircase, not down it, but it was much too late. He yelped with surprise as they fell down the stairs, and he slid to a stop at the bottom with the Gryffindor on top of him. His father often said that there was never a good deed that went unpunished, and he was beginning to think that this was definitely one of those times.

Lawrence waved his hand flippantly. He was bruised, he was sore, but otherwise nothing that wouldn't heal on its own. "Thank you, no I'm fine." He grunted slightly as he picked himself up, and brushed himself off. "Are you okay though?" Lawrence was rather durable, but his eyes didn't miss the scraped elbow. "Do you want to go to the hospital wing? Or just go to sleep?" Curfew was well passed, after all.
No worries there, mate. It was the most obvious conclusion!

James was patrolling the corridors looking for those out of bed who shouldn't be, and by complete chance, he decided to take a shortcut up a flight of stairs that he happened to know led to the next floor. To his surprise, as he was about to turn into the passage, he heard a couple of thumps, and frowning, he walked around the corner. Right at his feet at the bottom of the staircase were a couple of people. Looking closer in the relative darkness, he recognised one as a first year Gryffindor who had broken his broom, but the second he did not. Although tall, he wasn't anyone he knew, so he assumed he was either a transfer or somebody with very tall parents indeed. Still, they were both out after curfew, and he sighed. He hadn't actually come across anyone like this before, so he wasn't entirely sure on what a suitable punishment was. "You do both realise that there is a curfew? And that you should be in the Common Room of your respective houses by now?"

Thought I'd jump in on this :r I was tempted to jumpscare them xD

At least neither were seriously hurt. Hemi stood up and brushed the dust from his creased robes. He laughed, "No I think I'll be okay, thanks." Now that they were on a level floor he could see exactly how much taller Lawerence was, Hemi had to crane his neck just to speak to him. Was this kid seriously a first year?

Hemi's attention turned to the prefect who had just arrived. It was the one who owned the broom Hemi had shamefully used to sweep the floor. He knew better now, and also knew he wasn't supposed to be out after dark. "Oh hello! He said, "We're innocent, I got my foot stuck then Lawerence helped me out, but then we fell down the stairs." Hemi explained, "Look, I even grazed my elbow!

Lawrence was too well aware that he towered over the boy, but there was little he could do about it, other than lean downward slightly. It didn't help much, but perhaps it would save the boy the trouble of nearly breaking his neck whilst he craned upwards. He smiled apologetically, and decided that perhaps leaning against the railing of the stairs would be best for now.

The Ravenclaw froze, however, when he heard an older voice addressing them. He looked at the older Gryffindor boy, a prefect, judging by the badge he wore. He looked worriedly at Hemi, quickly growing nervous. He was happy that hemi seemed to be able to speak quickly, and explained the situation to the older student. Lawrence tugged on his uniform nervously as he spoke. "There was some sort of gag stair, or something," he explained quietly. "We were both about to go to our Common Rooms - or do you think Hemi's elbow should be seen by the nurse?" It was best to ask for his opinion, as it would be best for Hemi to be escorted to the hospital wing by a prefect, than another first year.

James tried not to smile as he watched the two boys disentangle themselves from each other, stand up, and finally start talking to him. As much as he was meant to be serious on occasions like this, he couldn't help a small smile creasing his face at the scene. Still, he tried to look sternly at the two boys, especially since one was in his own house of all. Although realising that both were out of bed, their excuse was a valid one, since he himself had fallen for the trick several times over his time at HNZ. "I see. Well, we best be getting back to bed, no need for the nurse, James can heal that in a jiffy." He pulled out his wand and pointed it at Hemi's elbow, muttering Episkey. Then, because he was curious about the other boy's height, and knowing that since Hemi was a muggleborn, he'd have no predilection towards giants, if his suspicion was correct, he asked the boy "If you don't mind me asking, are you a half-giant?" The two of them were roughly equal height, and James wondered what he would reach as he matured into a man.

Lawerence and Hemi were able to coherently explain what had happened and that put them in the clear. He could tell that James found it amusing which in turn made Hemi smile. Hemi liked this prefect, he had been understanding about the broom situation and was understanding of this too.

Better yet, he fixed Hemi's graze with magic. The first year never wanted to go to the hospital wing and was relieved that now he had absolutely no reason to. "Thanks for that, magic really is amazing!" Hemi flicked his elbow to confirm it didn't hurt anymore.

He was ready to return to his Common Room when James asked a very peculiar question. Hemi immediately looked to Lawerence and then back to James. He had no idea what he was on about, how could he be a giant? Giants were imaginary.

Lawrence was relieved to find that this prefect was kind of awesome, and very understanding. It was probably because they explained themselves properly. Who could remain mad at a simple mistake? Especially when it was not even their doing. He smiled at Hemi's elbows was healed, wanting to be older so he could begin to learn some proper spells, beyond being able to light up a room. with his Gryffindor companion healed, and the prefect not yelling at them, the Ravenclaw was all set to leave, until he had a question posed to him by James.

His ears went a little red. It was blatantly obvious what he was, really. His height, his build - his youthful voice often made it clear to others that he was much younger than they first assumed upon looking at him. Seeing no reason to lie about it, Lawrence stood tall, trying to be confident. "Um, I, ah, my grandmother's a giant," he explained, looking between James and Hemi nervously. He had no idea, after all, exactly how they would react. Although, if he were reading James right, perhaps he wouldn't be rude about it.

It relieved James in turn to know that the two felt grateful for being let off the hook on what was definitely something which could have been punished. But James wasn't a cruel person, and the fact that they were new first years, still unsure about the rules, made him want to let them go. If they had been slightly older, he'd have been much less lenient with the rules, expecting them to know them by now. He smiled warmly at Hemi as he commented on magic, "Tell me about it! Magic has saved my skin on more than one occasion. Only now has it done it literally!" He winked at them both as he joked, hoping to lighten the mood yet further.

James felt slightly intimidated as the boy drew himself up further, stopping a few inches taller than him. He raised an eyebrow at this, deducing that the boy was clearly proud of his heritage, yet scared to admit it. Yet the nervousness made him wonder if he really was proud, or whether he was just putting it on. "I see. Being a giant isn't anything you should be scared about, but I have a word of advice for you, stay away from some of the blood haters. There's a couple around, even in this day and age. Anyway, shall we make our way upstairs and back to bed? We can talk on the way."

He was part giant! The magical world was full of surprises for Hemi, it was constantly intertwined with muggle fiction. It made Hemi believe that there was truth to the fairy tales he had been told as a child. Maybe George really did slay that dragon, maybe Santa does exist, and maybe there is a beanstalk somewhere which leads to a Giant Kingdom in the sky. "Oh wow did you ever visit her up in the clouds?" Hemi asked. "Your grandmother." He felt he needed to explain himself further, "As a kid I was told giants live in the clouds."

They began to climb the stairs back to the Common Rooms. "Guys, watch that step!" He said, pointing to the one which had swallowed his foot. "That's the step I got my foot stuck in." Hemi was careful to avoid making the same mistake twice by jumping to the next.

"Hey James, did you ever manage to repair that broomstick?" He asked as a side thought.

Lawrence tucked his hair behind his ear as James spoke, sounding suspiciously a lot like his father. Whilst not of giant blood himself, his father was nothing if not sympathetic and understanding. He hadn't been sure what to expect upon his arrival, but so far he had been met with nothing but stares of confusion - probably because of his immense height that would only continue. He turned to look at Hemi with confusion, however, and shook his head. "Oh, um, my grandmother doesn't live in clouds, she lives in a forest. She doesn't like really wide open spaces," he replied. "Giants don't really live in clouds, as far as I've ever heard." He was guilty of not frequently asking his grandmother of giant life and culture, but he doubted she would be very appreciative of his queries regardless.

The Ravenclaw Common Room wasn't too far, although he would have further to go than the pair of Gryffindor's travelling with him. He stepped over the stair carefully as it was pointed out to him, and shook his head at it. A professor would probably find it later. He frowned slightly, from confusion, as a broomstick was brought up. Clearly it had nothing to do with their current situation, and so he remained silent.

James laughed at Hemi's words, although he realised that it might have sounded slightly patronising afterwards, and he fell silent once more, preferring to listen to the other two talk before he had to make any sounds himself. Of course James had heard the muggle stories himself a while back, and he helped Lawrence out as best he could. "Are you talking about that giant on the end of the tall bean? Nah, giants don't live up there anymore, they prefer the mountains or forests. Only safe places for them these days..." He smiled as Hemi commented on the step, having got used to it by now as his time at HNZ, and stepped over it easily. He was used to taking two steps at a time, and this was no different. "Well I haven't had much time for my broom at the moment, what with NEWTs to prepare for and all, but I'm hoping to talk to Professor Cliffton soon about it. It's not too badly damaged really, just a couple of tail twigs." He hoped Cliffton would be able to fix it, because he didn't want to shell out another 200 galleons, and it had been a gift as well.

Professor Justin Cliffeton walked along the Seventh Floor Corridor with Professor Cyndi Weasley Kingsley. It had been a pretty uneventful night so far, nothing out of the ordinary, which was a pretty big stretch for a place like Hogwarts to say the least. You would have to travel a long way to find somewhere that didn't have something magical. He heard some voices in the distance and sighed, why couldn't people just follow the rules like they were supposed to? As they approached, he was a little outraged to see two first years and a prefect there. The prefect would more than likely have a good reason to be there, but the other two, well they sure as heck would wish that they had picked a different night to sneak out. "Well, what seems to be going on here? Are we all aware that there's a curfew? Didn't feel like following the rules tonight?" Justin asked with a frown on his face.

The night had been uneventful, but Professor Cliffton was at least good company. Compared to the past weeks, tonight had been incredibly quiet. At least until right now. The pair had heard noises and followed the sounds to discover a group of students out of bounds, one of her prefects among them. Crossing her arms, Cyndi waited to hear the students as they answered Justin's questions.

"Oh," Hemi couldn't help but be ever so slightly disappointed that giants didn't live in cloud castles. "Forests are cool too," He smiled at James recognising the story, "Yes Jack and the Giant Bean Stalk! It's a fairy tale in the muggle world." Hemi explained to Lawerence. In that story Giants had been villains, but he left that piece of information out to avoid offending his heritage.

They continued down the hallway, "I'm so sorry about that broomstick. It was really stupid of me!" Hemi admitted. He would never make that mistake again for as long as he lived.

Ever heard of the expression, 'Speak of the Devil'? Moments after James had spoken Professor Cliffton's name, he materialised before them along with the Gryffindor HoH. Hemi swallowed, Professor's after an explanation were much scarier than Prefects.

"Yes Sir." He knew they were out after curfew, "No Sir" They weren't planning on breaking any rules. "Sorry, it was accidental." Hemi looked to Lawerence and James to explain the situation better than he was.

Lawrence had never had experience with muggles, as his household would find it rather difficult to blend comfortably into muggle society, and he wasn't sure his father, especially, could give magic up. At least James seemed to know what Hemi was referencing. If he had the chance, he would probably have to ask the young Gryffindor more about the stories he heard of giants - and see how they measured against magical stories.

The Ravenclaw jumped slightly when they were approached once again - by a pair of professors this time. Honestly, there must have been some sort of sign asking for any authority member to swing on by. There was no other way around it, really. They were out of their common rooms after curfew, and a glance at the time told him that they were now rather late indeed. "We're sorry," he said, nodding to Hemi after he looked at him. It was his turn to try and explain the situation better, it'd seem. "We were just on our way to our Common Rooms - Hemi's foot got stuck on a stair and then I pulled him out and we fell, and then not like, five minutes ago, James came asked us what we were doing." He smiled meekly at them, hoping this wouldn't end in detention or something. He looked to James, as the older student and a prefect, surely they're listen to him.

James sighed as the two first years looked to him, although he wasn't totally surprised. As a Prefect, he assumed that he must look to have more authority or hold more sway with teachers, and this was just such a case where this might happen. Be that as it may, he suspected that it might be true. "Professors, good to see you, although I'm curious as to why you patrol in pairs these days, surely we are safe here? But I fear I must corroborate on what these two miscreants are doing here. It appears our very own Gryffindor got caught in the gag stair in the covered shortcut, and had to wait for this other boy to free him. As it happens, I was attracted by the noise and found these two. I healed a graze on Hemi here and was escorting them up to their dormitories. I suspect that they would of course have been in bed had this event not happened." At this, he looked meaningfully at the two, hoping that they'd not be stupid enough to deny his unfounded suggestion. He had no wish to punish them, and although he suspected Professor Kingsley wouldn't, he wasn't too sure. To change the subject somewhat, he turned to Professor Cliffton, "Professor, would you mind me stealing your mind at some point. You see, I've got a small problem with my broom, and I was wondering whether you'd be able to help me."

"It helps us manage the boredom of patrolling" Cyndi replied in a terse manner. The professor had had an earful from Ava about the prefect's behavior at the beginning of term, and she was not pleased at his insinuation here either. The school, itself, was always safe. Now, that Chaos was gone, Professor Kingsley had no doubt that the students had nothing to fear.

"You'd all do well to keep an eye on the time and not wait until the last minute to get to your dorms next time" she added before waiting to see if Justin was going to speak with James.

Justin would rather patrol in pairs then on his own, it always got so boring. There was literally nothing to do but talk to yourself, but you couldn't even do that because all of the potential catches would hear you coming and hide in some passageway. He looked at James, "Well, I'd like to keep my mind if that's okay, but I can put it to use to try and help you out. Bring it to my office when you're free." He said, smiling. He thought that was a pretty funny thing to say. Looking towards the Gryffindor, "Do you need the nurse or is your foot better now?" He asked, the last thing he wanted to do would be to go to the nurse at this time of night but he didn't want Hemi to get worse.
