He used to be someone named Tom Marvolo Riddle. A fancy little anagram - Tom Marvolo Riddle rearranged is “I am Lord Voldemort.”
“Who can tell me when Tom Marvolo Riddle was born?” He picked out one of the students near the back of the classroom.
“He was born on the 31st of December, 1926,” came the correct answer.
“Good, good, Five points to your house,” Professor Hume began pacing at the front of the room. “Now, Tom Riddle was born to a witch and a muggle under a love potion. His mother died giving birth to him, and so he was raised in Wool’s Orphanage. Even as a child, he performed malicious acts against his fellow orphans, before he attended Hogwarts, Scotland. Once there, he was sorted into Slytherin. He was, by all accounts, a model student at Hogwarts. He became prefect and Head Boy, and earned a Medal of Magical Merit. He was able to fool everyone -except Dumbledore, who was Transfiguration Professor at the time- into thinking that he was this kind, brilliantly-minded young man.” Vader grabbed his coffee and took a drink from it, clearing his mouth of dryness.
“He even opened the Chamber of Secrets while he was still in school, causing the death of Myrtle Warren, and blamed the cause on a half-giant student named Rubeus Hagrid. After graduating, Voldemort had a small circle of pureblood friends who were more like servants than anything. He began collecting a group of creatures and other like-minded purebloods to his cause, which was to eradicate muggles and muggleborns. During this time, Voldemort abandoned his given name and became exclusively known as Lord Voldemort. He attempted to become Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts Scotland two separate times. The first was right after he graduated, where he was turned away for lack of experience. Then, ten years later, attempted again, but Dumbledore was headmaster at that time and wisely turned him away. After Dumbledore refused Voldemort, the Defense Position was rumored to be cursed, -not a single year went by without something happening to the Professor to prevent them from coming back.
After being declined the professor position, Voldemort went back in a sort of hiding, slowly growing his followers. These people you know as the Death Eaters, but they weren’t always known as such. Voldemort originally called his followers the Knights of Walpurgis. These were the beginning of the Death Eaters, but we’ll go over this next class.”
Professor Hume clapped his hands together. “Now, I know this was a long lesson, and I’m about to make it harder with homework, but I hope you’ll find it in your hearts to forgive me,” he winked. “Homework is thus: give an opinion of why Lord Voldemort would want to teach at Hogwarts, and what happened after he was denied. Now, you’re all dismissed, have a good day!”
