Sixth Years, Lesson Three

“Good afternoon, class! Today we’ll be going over the First Wizarding War. Do remember to take notes, as this material will be covered in the final exam. Now, last week we ended off at the formation of the Death Eaters.”“As previously stated, Voldemort spend a lot of time gather followers and diving deep into the Dark Arts. Open warfare, however, did not start until 1970. Before this, he managed to gather some rather unsavory characters, including one Fenrir Greyback - an infamous werewolf, and killing countless muggles while still maintaining the Statute of Secrecy. That was, until 1970, when Voldemort announced himself as the “Dark Lord” and began many acts of terrorism in Britain.” Professor Hume paused to take a drink of his coffee.

“He had gathered a literal army of dark creatures and dark wizards, aiming for the destruction of the British Ministry of Magic. He wanted to create a world run by purebloods, while Muggleborns were either eradicated or kept underground, despite his background as a halfblood himself.”

“Dark creatures and wizards weren’t the only ones in his army - there were giants, as well. In 1970, his army began open warfare, killing muggles without care, and attacking if not also killing, many Muggleborns and even other purebloods against their cause who they considered to be ‘blood traitors.’ Goblin and house elf families were also targeted during this time. Now, who can tell me the signal Death Eaters placed over buildings and other places where they struck?”
Professor Hume asked, looking out over the class. He pointed to someone in the front row.

It was the Dark Mark, it was a skull with a snake coming out of its mouth.” They answered.

“Good job, 5 points to your house,” Professor Hume beamed at the student. “Now, the Dark Mark was not only cast over the buildings where Death Eaters struck, inspiring fear among the masses, but it was also tattooed on the upper left forearm of his inner circle of Death Eaters.”

“The Death Eaters didn’t just commit murders, however. They also infiltrated the British Ministry of Magic, using blackmail and even the highly illegal Imperius Curse to subdue their victims. Because of Voldemort’s power and ruthlessness, he earned the title of most powerful Dark wizard of all time, surpassing even Grindelwald.”
Professor Ferrin clasped his hands behind his back as he paced.

“Of course, where there is Dark, there is Light. Albus Dumbledore, hailed as one of the most powerful Light wizards of our time, created an organization called the Order of the Phoenix, to combat the Death Eaters and Voldemort himself. At first they seemed to be just a renegade group, but as more and more people joined up, including several famous Aurors, they became a formidable group indeed. Dumbledore was able to invent the method of delivering messages via the Patronus Charm. But, despite the Order’s efforts, Voldemort’s power and reach continued to grow.”

Professor Hume looked at the kids seriously. “They even suffered several casualties from Voldemort himself. It was around this time that Voldemort’s name became a taboo, causing pretty much everyone except Dumbledore himself to start referring to Voldemort as “He-who-must-not-be-named,” or “You-know-who.” No one could trust each other during this time as his followers and people under the Imperious Curse were innumerable.”

“Throughout the war, several Ministers of Magic came and went, unable to end the war. Still, even as the war raged outside its grounds, Hogwarts remained safe and untouched by Death Eaters. People speculate that this was because Voldemort was afraid of Dumbledore, who, at that time, was Headmaster. There was also a man inside the Ministry that began rising through the ranks quickly -Barty Crouch Senior. But that’s a story for another day,”

“We will continue next lesson. No Homework this week.” Professor Hume waved his hand, and the door to the classroom swung open. “Class dismissed.”

Assignment: RP the Lesson.

Magne walked into the history of magic classroom and took his usual spot in the room. His gaze moved to the professor as he got his quill out and began getting down what the professor was telling them about the first wizarding war. It seemed pretty terrible, he was glad he was living well beyond it. About all of the different things, he didn't know what they did, this was him learning about all of it for the first time. Eventually the lecture was drawn to a close and Magne packed up his things and left the room.
