Sixth Years: Lesson Four

Angel would be the first to admit he wasn’t overly fond of today’s lesson subject and he was relieved when his Sixth Years finally started arriving for class. He’d taken to exiling today’s plants on the other side of his office until today and would be glad to be finally rid of them again once they were done being used as a teaching aid. Eager to get the lesson over with, Angel quickly swung the greenhouse door shut with his wand once the last student was inside.

Right, straight to it. Today we’ll be looking at Fanged Geraniums. Feisty bastards,” he said with a tense smile. He still hadn’t quite forgiven this crop for ruining the sleeves one of his favorite shirts yet. “Quite similar to the muggle “Cranesbills”, which share the same scientific family “Geranium”, but not much else. Most notable differences being the fanged geranium has fangs and a tendency to bite. Watch your fingers,” Angel said, beckoning the students closer to the group of fanged geraniums settled on the table.

The fangs are used in potion-making, useful for strength potions, or even culinarily. Adds some extra bite,” he said with a dry, if bitter, laugh. “Come on and take a look, but be mindful of your hands. They’re relatively easy to care for, minus the teeth, of course, just ah-” Angel snapped his fingers at a particularly ornery geranium, waving his wand with his free hand to freeze it before it could finish trying to take a bite out of anyone. “-I suggest you employ an immobilizing charm if you intend on harvesting anything. Though if one does get its teeth in you, some dittany or quick healing charm should do the trick.

That’s all I’ve got for you today, though I'm willing to give extra credit to anyone who can find a recipe that uses fanged geranium fangs,” he said, dismissing the class with a lazy wave. “Feel free to check up on your screechsnaps or if you want to try your luck watering one of the geraniums, the dittany’s over here.

----
RP the lesson and have your student interact with a geranium if they’re feeling brave. Extra credit for describing any recipe that might use the fangs*

*There is no canon for this, so feel free to name or create any dish for funsies.

Lucy entered the greenhouse in high spirits, looking forward to whatever they'd be studying and hoping it wasn't too dangerous. She took notes as the professor began the lesson, figuring it'd probably be on the exam. Fanged geraniums didn't seem like a fun plant - not a nice one at least. The recipe angle was interesting though. Lucy wasn't much of a cook, but a salad maybe? She considered it as the lesson continued. It wrapped up quickly, and Lucy decided to walk around a little bit before leaving to go back to the castle.

Salad Recipe!
1 cucumber
10 olives
4 fanged geranium fangs
2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
1/2 juice of a lemon
5 sprigs of mint

Cut the cucumber into chunks. In a bowl, tear the olives up and cover with the balsamic vinegar. Let sit. Juice the lemon and tear the mint. Add all into a bowl and mix up. A salad with a kick!

Teddy had been enjoying studying dangerous plants this semester, and Fanged Geranium's looked fun. Although he did watch as Castillo almost had his hand bitten off by one of the plants so maybe fun was the wrong word. It was a relatively short lesson, and once they were dismissed Teddy wondered if attempting to water a Fanged Geranium was a good idea or not. In the end he decided that it wasn't and left the greenhouse.

Fanged Geranium Jam
  • 2 cups fresh geranium fangs
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Vanilla to taste
1. Heat water and sugar to make the syrup
2. Add lemon juice and geranium fangs, then simmer for 30 minutes
3. Add vanilla
4. Pour into jar, the jam will thicken as it cools

Callie walked into the herbology greenhouse and took her usual spot in the room. She looked towards the professor as the man got started on what they would be covering within this lesson. Fanged geraniums. She nodded along as the professor spoke, taking the odd word down as she could, making sure that she didn’t miss anything important, though when the professor was finished with the lecture she spent the time with screechsnap that was hers, before she packed up and headed out of the room.

Enoch walked into the herbology greenhouse and took the same spot as he always did. He glanced towards the professor as he took out his notes and books and toyed with the screechsnap at his desk. He looked to the professor as the professor then began speaking, going over fanged geraniums. He nodded along, writing down what the professor was telling them, making sure that he was writing down what was important. It wasn’t too long a lecture and he rolled his eyes at the people who opted to try to water the thing. He’d rather not lose fingers. The lesson was wrapped up and he headed out of the room.
