Seventh Years, Lesson Two

“Today we’ll be going over the Goblin Rebellion and the Giant Wars. Remember to take notes, as this will be on your NEWT.” Vader looked around before clearing his throat and continuing.

“Due to the discrimination and prejudice towards their kind, the series of revolts by the goblins became known as the Goblin Rebellion. These occurred mostly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Each of these rebellions were bloody and vicious, and there were heavy casualties on both sides.

In 1612, a rebellion took place around Hogsmeade Village. The Three Broomsticks Inn was used as headquarters for wixen during this rebellion. Then, in 1752, there was another revolt, leaving a Minister for Magic to retire - and another one again when the goblins allied themselves with werewolves. Despite their differences, both werewolves and goblins were treated horribly by most wixen at the time.”
Vader took a break to sip some water before continuing.

“There are a number of reasons as to why the goblins have rebelled so often. There was and has been a lack of wand privileges to non-wixen, there’s always been a lack of goblin representation in the Wizengamot, and there have even been overtures toward actually enslaving goblinkind. So, looking at these reasons, it’s hard to imagine who wouldn’t want to rebel under these discriminatory and prejudicial factors.” For once, Vader did not have his cheerful grin on, instead a solemn line.

“Onto the Giant Wars: they took place in the nineteenth century and involved heavy casualties as well. The wars have ended for now, and there was some benefit to the wars on the wixen’s side, as we learned how to stun a full-blooded giant. Giants were also involved in the wizarding wars, such as when they allied with Voldemort in the twentieth century. They are very violent creatures, but even so, several wixen have reached out, trying to strengthen the relationship between wixen and giants.”

Vader paused again, his solemn expression remaining. “I want you to think about how the relationships between giants, goblins, and wixen are today. Have things improved? Will there be more rebellions? Goblins still do not have wand privileges, and there is still a lot of prejudice against half-goblin and half-giant wixen such as your previous professor. Still, a werewolf ran for Minister not long ago here in New Zealand, and my predecessor was able to hold a job here for years. Are things going in the right direction? It seems so.” He looked around the classroom. “Giants aren’t meant to live in tight quarters with each other - confinement has only led to violence against and killing each other. That will be all for today. Homework is on the board.” He dismissed his students.

Assignment: RP the lesson.

Extra credit: Write a short essay over your opinion on what contributed most to the goblin rebellion, and how things are better today. If you think they are not, tell me why. Worth 5 EC points.
