Seventh Years; Lesson One

Professor Lyra Potter walked into her classroom with a bright smile on her face. She loved being back in the castle for the start of the term, but it was a little weird that she was taking over the position that her step-grandfather most recently held, but the position had also belonged to her grandmother for quite some time before Jacqueline retired. Lyra perched on the edge of her desk until all of her students arrived. "Welcome to your final year of Transfiguration. I am Professor Lyra Potter, and I will be your transfiguration professor this year. I look forward to getting know each of you this semester. I know you have your NEWTs looming at the end of the year and my goal is to make sure you are ready for them. We will cover a few new topics, but in the process of covering these, you will be reviewing for your exam."

Professor Potter hopped off her desk and began to circulate the room as she continued. "Today we are going to start with Untrasfiguration and reversal spells. Untransfiguration is returning something to its proper form. Untransfiguration is essentially a reversal spell. We will learn more about these types of spells this term," she said pausing for a moment.

Giving the students a once over, she realized that was enough talk for the day. Application of the lecture was more interesting for students. She remembered that clearly from when she was in school. "Today we are going to work on conjuring chairs." With three taps in the air, Lyra conjured a simple wooden chair as a demonstration for the class. "It is not necessary to do anything complex. Just imagine a plain wooden chair. The more complicated the chair the harder it is to create," she said. There were a few she knew would want to try a more complex chair, but she hoped they would wait until they at least have a simple wooden chair first. "This is a nonverbal spell, but it is important to use the three-tap method with your wand. Now, once you have a standard wooden chair, bring it up to me, and we will test your work. Any questions?" she asked.

Seeing none, Lyra waved her hand at them. "Have at it! You have the rest of the class to practice. I will be here if you need any help." Professor Styx moved to sit on top of her desk, watching their work intently.

He couldn't believe it. Mikael had been avoiding him for the last couple of days and he really couldn't work out why. What was going on with him lately? First the thing about his cousin and now this? He was definitely a grump. He knew he had to go and talk to Kael about it but right now he had class, so he knew it could wait until later. He was a bit surprised to see another Professor in the role though, having expected to see Professor Styx. The man intimidated him a lot, but maybe this would be a little better. He listened to the lecture and then leaned forward eagerly as she mentioned they would be conjuring a chair - simple enough, but probably more complex in execution. He had been having a bit of trouble with his non-verbal spells after all. He'd practiced some in the break with Bryce, but he wouldn't call himself fluent in it. As Professor Potter demonstrated the spell, her energy was infectious, and he found himself eager to try. He focused on the visualisation of a sturdy, plain wooden chair: straight legs, a flat seat, and a supportive backrest. Carefully raising his wand, he tapped the air three times and concentrated on the chair. The flicker of magic materialised into a somewhat uneven wooden log before him. Well, first try. Try again. He tried again and watched as what appeared was a somewhat uneven wooden chair before him. He frowned slightly at the imperfections, noting a wobble in one leg, but decided it was good enough to present. Lifting it carefully, he brought it to Professor Potter, eager for her feedback and any tips on refining his spellwork. While the task was deceptively simple, he could feel his magical reserves stretched in new ways, a sign of the challenges yet to come this year.

Savannah hadn’t been surprised by who was now head girl, she had called it the year before when she’d spoken to her and honestly, Savannah was pretty pleased about it. She didn’t want to be head girl, hadn’t wanted it, Prefect status was more than enough. That obviously she had the SDA. Both of which she liked far more than anything else she could’ve got from any position in these upper years. Savannah was getting ready for the day, getting her books and notes together and then headed out of the dorm room and to her first class of the day. She had NEWTs this year, so she was going to need to focus.

Savannah walked into the transfiguration classroom and took his usual spot in the room. She glanced up at the professor and was sure she’d seen this woman at the school before though teaching a different class. She rolled her eyes a little at the professor’s introductions. They didn’t need a professor to remind them of the super important exams that they had. Savannah took a couple of notes from what the professor was saying about what they’d cover, but the lesson itself focused on conjuring. Savannah took her wand then thought of a chair and conjured it. It was a pretty good chair, but not perfect so Savannah did it again, pleased with the second result she got. With that she then packed up her things and left the room.
