Second Years, Lesson Five: Learning Torte (teapot into a turtle)

Edward was putting out a display of different teapots of various designs and colours when his second years arrived. "Good morning! How are we all? We have a fun lesson today." He greeted them brightly, picking up a multi-coloured polka dot teapot and holding it in the palm of one hand. "You will each turn one of these decorative teapots into a tortoise. I want you all to be very careful when performing this spell. I will be taking points off of your grade if the tortoise breathes steam or has ceramic tiles on its shell. Patterns are fine, but I don't want to see actual porcelain left over. We're focusing on a complete transformation."

Edward took out his wand and pointed it at the teapot he was holding. "Torte!" He spoke the incantation clearly so his students could hear. With a poof, the teapot changed into a tortoise that fitted nicely in his open palm and now brown and green in colour. "The incantation, as you just heard, is Torte. Please repeat after me." He had his students repeat the incantation once before nodding his head in approval. "Come one by one, choose your favourite teapot and return to your seat with it." Edward placed his transformed tortoise back onto the table, turning it back into a teapot with a quick flick of his wand.

Once each student had selected a teapot and returned to their desks, Edward gave them the go ahead. "You may begin. Take your time, and remember to focus. At the end of class, bring your tortoise to the front for grading. Enjoy the process, but don’t let the fun distract you from getting it right!"

The heavy point loss upset her, and honestly she was kind of miserable about it. She wondered if Demi had also lost points, she hoped so, though she doubted it. She had been the physical instigator but she maintained that she’d been forced into doing something. Her detentions with Professor Edogawa also hurt her pride and she was just regularly annoyed by the entire thing. Her hand didn’t actually hurt anymore, but it was a sort of dull phantom pain, and with Demi walking around with her face black and blue, it didn’t help matters. The entire school probably knew by now who’d done it to her, but Tori would have done it again probably, she’d deserve it. She didn’t deserve to have a pretty face or friends.

She listened as they were told about what they would be doing today, and she remembered the lecture from last week about inanimate to animate. So she carefully selected a teapot covered in cheerful sunflower patterns, it was unique at least. Setting it down, she practiced the incantation softly under her breath—"Torte"—ensuring she had the pronunciation perfect. With a deep breath, she focused on seeing her tortoise in her mind, imagining the shell and the stubby little legs. Pointing her wand at the teapot, she cast the spell, and with a small poof, the teapot transformed. The tortoise now sitting on her desk had sunflower-like patterns faintly etched into its shell, and its tiny legs shifted as it blinked up at her. Thrilled with her success, Tori carefully picked it up and carried it to the front for grading, beaming with pride.

Lumos couldn’t believe what had gone down between Demi and Tori. He still wasn’t entirely sure he understood what had happened as he walked into the Transfiguration classroom and immediately headed away from the clearly still angry Gryffindor. He didn’t really know how he felt about Tori basically saying she didn’t want to be his friend anymore - he was used to her, he liked her mostly, so when she’d called him a traitor something inside of him had recoiled, and it wasn’t a feeling he was especially fond of. But he couldn’t abandon Demi, she was his best friend, what would that have made him?

The looked at the teapots, trying to decide which one he liked best, before finally settling on a plain silver teapot. He carried it back to his desk, carefully setting it down as though it were the most precious thing in the world. Picking up his wand, he repeated the incantation quietly to himself, "Torte, Torte, Torte," ensuring his pronunciation was good. He thought about his tortoise, the domed shell being smooth like the teapot and then once he was satisfied with his creation in his mind, he tapped the teapot with his wand and said firmly, “Torte!”

The teapot trembled slightly before expanding and reshaping. The spout elongated into a small head, the handle became a sturdy tail, and the body transformed into a shell - but he noticed steam puffing from the tortoise's nostrils. “Oh no!” he muttered, quickly working to fix the flaw before bringing it up to Professor P for grading.
