Second Years Charms Lesson Three

Mallory couldn’t believe the semester was already halfway over. She really couldn’t. She thought she really had been doing well, none of the students seemed to outwardly hate her, though she could sense several that seemed annoyed in classes. That was to be expected, however, she didn’t expect every student to adore classes.

Mallory smiled as the students came in, motioning for them to stay up front with her. “Please stay up front with me, my dears. Today we’re going to be practicing a few spells elsewhere in the castle,” she told them, tucking her dark hair behind her ear. Her hair was falling freely down her back today, her robes a soft green. She had woven a bit of dark ivy through a single small braid that wrapped around her head.

Today we will be learning the locking and unlocking charm. Let’s begin with the unlocking charm. Wands out, please,” she instructed, keeping an eye on all of her students. “The incantation for this is Alohomora. Say it together please everyone: al-LOH-ha-MOR-ah.” She went over the pronunciation a few times, smiling at the students as they seemed to get a grip on the pronunciation. “Now onto the locking charm. This is Colloportus. Ready? cull-low-PORE-tus." She ran over this one a few times as well, smiling as the students seemed to grasp this one as well.

She clapped her hands together after a few moments. “Alright, everyone, very good. Now, we shall head down to the second floor, let’s go, all together now,” she herded them back out the door, leading them to the empty hallway. "Is everyone here?" She asked as they came to a stop, looking around to count the students and make sure no second years had tried to make a bid for freedom. "Okay, partner up please, and choose a door. Most of the classrooms on this floor are empty so you can practice locking and unlocking the doors." She smiled warmly, and wanting to give them more incentive to practice, she added, "For every door unlocked, and every door locked, using the spells, you will earn your house one point,"

She hoped her students would do well. She would be watching to see how the students were getting on and had a small notebook with the name of each of her students on it so she could keep track of who earned how many points. "Once you are finished, come and let me know please, otherwise good luck!" She smiled, watching them as they worked.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total of eight points only please.

Tori wasn’t feeling well today, she’d been feeling a little off all week and she was beginning to wonder if it didn’t have something to do with the screaming at the Quidditch game but also perhaps the fact she’d just told her friends she wasn’t going to be around for half of next year. She sighed ad she sat in her chair in charms, bouncing her foot. She followed everyone when they were told to move, wand in hand and listened to what they would be doing today. Locking and ulocking charms seemed like they would be handy. Were there charms to keep things locked as an adult so your kids couldn’t get into them when they were older and could do this spell? She’d have to find out. She turned to a classmate and nodded to the door, ready to get into it. “Alohomora!” The door clicked open easily and she grinned before stepping back a little. “Alright your turn!” She said, letting her partner have a go, Once they were done, she made her way over to the professor with a satisfied grin. “I think I got four, Professor!”

Felix this week had found his attention on another Gryffindor, one that he couldn't help but wonder whether he should have spoken to more over the last two years. After finding out in Charms that they'd be practicing their spells in the castle, he'd followed the group down the corridor, hands in the pockets on his robes. He wasn't exactly a fan usually of group or pair work, because he was so accustomed to being left out on his own, but this time he made a note to linger near Tori so that he could get the chance to hang with her a little before she left at the end of the year. It would be fine, she'd be back, right? Felix waited for Tori to go first, before practicing the unlocking charm afterward. "Alohomora," he said clearly, glad that the door didn't seem to have any trouble listening to him. "Yeah, yeah me too," he nodded at the professor when she told her she'd gotten four. He hadn't actually been counting but since he'd tried every lock after her lead, that surely had to be right.

Eurydice stood towards the back of the group, lingering with her cousins while her wand was twirled between her fingers. Today, she decided to partner up with Rose, giving William a kiss on the cheek instead - hopefully, he'd partner up with Jonah. She hadn't practiced the spells prior, but figured between her and Rose they could figure out the spells together. The first door they approached for Eury's turn was locked and the Hufflepuff sighed. Adjusting her grip on her wand, she took a deep breath before attempting the spell. "Alohomora," she murmured. It took another breath before the lock clicked open and Eury smiled faintly. The next door was one she had to unlock again. The third one for Eury's turn however was already opened, so she supposed it meant it was time to try the other spell. "Colloportus," she muttered. No sound and Eury frowned as she tried to open the door, only to find it still open. "Huh," she said as she stared at the door that refused to close and said the incantation with more authority. “Colloportus.” The door sealed with a soft click and she breathed a sigh of relief. The fourth foor was also unlocked that she had to open while the fifth was one she had to try locking again. "Colloportus," she cast, though this time she got it on the first try. When she and Rose had enough turns each and agreed that they were done practicing for the day, she waited for her cousin so they could let the professor know they were done.

Susie couldn’t focus today. She was too busy thinking about Tori, and how, in just a few short months, she might never see the Gryffindor again. Tiredly, she took out her wand and began practising the incarnations. They were a little bit more complex than the previous weeks’, but if the person beside her was saying it correctly, then so was Susie. She headed out with her classmates and followed Professor Grayveson until they reached some doors. Tori was claimed almost immediately, so Susie picked somebody else to practise with, going into the classroom to unlock the door from the other side. She managed to unlock it twice before they switched roles, and then she locked it twice as well. It wasn’t a bad lesson in all. She was certainly looking forward to unlocking some more interesting doors later.

William was relieved that they would be doing spells again in class instead of review. They would be learning the locking and unlocking charms today, Alohomora and Colloportus. He practiced the pronunciation with the class a few times before following the rest of the class down to the Second Floor. He was a little disappointed when Eury told him that she was going to partner up with her cousin Rose, but she gave him a kiss on the cheek and it made him feel a little better. He partnered up with Jonah and the two of them took turns locking and unlocking doors. It was easier to do the spells after he tried it once. "Alohomora," and the door opened easily. After unlocking five doors and locking three, he was about to try and lock another one but the professor called the class to an end. William made his way back with the others so they could get their stuff and leave for the day.

Nox headed into charms with a bit of a wilted step, there was something going on with Tori, but he didn't know what. He turned around and they headed back out though because apparently they were doing a corridor lesson this time, which was fine with him. A little more interesting than just waving their wands at their desks. He partnered up quickly and they took turns in trying out the two new spells they had learned this lesson. He unlocked four doors before he decided to call it a day.
