The dress had belonged to her mother. Ella Martin-Clark was a small woman, with a delicate frame, a frame Louisa had inherited. She hadn't been planning on coming to this silly ball, but then the dress had arrived; Ella had altered it to fit Louisa, and she couldn't tell her mother she wouldn't be wearing it, not when she'd put so much work into it. She'd considered lying and telling her she'd gone, but the eleven year-old was honest by nature, and knew that her mother would see her going to this as a sign that she was alright in Hogwarts, that she wasn't too homesick. While Louisa was, in fact, incredibly homesick, she didn't want her Mum to worry. Her Dad had always spoken about the yule ball, teasing Ella about the girls he'd brought to them before he met her. This was just another aspect of life in Hogwarts Matthew Clark had ruined for her. She could feel him as she looked around the great hall. He'd always said it was transformed into something out of a fairytale during the yuletide celebrations. Between the skating rink, the sculptures and the monumental tree, she felt as though she'd been transported to the North Pole itself.

Wandering through the crowd, she found herself standing by one of the tables, nibbling on a mincer pie. She'd always liked the idea of mince pies, her father had told her that they were an alternative for poorer people during Christmases past, who hadn't been able to afford meat. She didn't know many people in Hogwarts, certainly not well enough to dance with. Not that she wanted to. She didn't dance anymore; she'd always been an average enough dancer. Slow dancing didn't work out well for her, she felt to awkward, but her Mum had taught her to swing dance ever since she was little, jiving around the kitchen. She couldn't imagine dancing now, in front of all these strangers. Still, she was content to watch those who whirled past her, her eyes widening as she saw the Headmistress dancing, she was really rather good, though Louisa didn't know the man she was with by name, she recognised him vaguely. She loved the music though, and unbeknownst to the tiny brunette, her lips had curved into a smile.
