Rory wasn't sure what to expect of the school, he'd met a number of people he was going to be at school with, but he hadn't yet met anyone he really liked, he didn't know what to make of any of them, he had never been surrounded by so many people his age and his nervous but rather blunt nature hardly helped him but he was in a country so far from his own, living with his sister as she attempted to get work, tasked with the job of looking after him while his father was still working and his mother was still dealing with his little brother. Rory didn't know what to make of the place, and he just sat on a bench where his sister had told him to remain as she'd venture out to the muggle world to find what she needed for something, it was just after seven in the morning and the boy was exhausted, his small, thin body was mostly covered by the huge jumper of his favourite quidditch team, and his usual skin tight skinny jeans. He was sitting staring blankly forward just waiting for her to return and listening to music using his magic device to do so. The boy would wait all day without moving because she was supposed to provide everything for him and he didn't have any money that meant he could buy things, so the young boy didn't have anywhere to go and no interest to move.

Alaska woke up to the sound of Obsidian Harbour bustling around her, the young blonde wasn't used to the sound of people out and about doing their thing. Alaska lived fairly rurally in America and never really made any social trips into town, despite her mother's efforts. Throwing on an outfit with tights, Alaska went out to explore the harbour, or maybe to grab a hot chocolate.

Walking along the road, Alaska couldn't help but think of school, she had met a few other potential first years but only somewhat liked a few. The American was glad they paid attention to her though, instead of the other pouty girl. Wrapping her cardigan a little tighter, Alaska saw one of the boys sitting by himself. Slowly wandering over to the bench, Alaska half-whispered, "Rory?" she hesitated, worried it may be some random person.

Rory had his hands in his pocket as he started forward, the cool morning air nipping at his ankles but he was just waiting, his sister had said she wouldn't be long and he fully trusted that she was telling the truth after all, she'd never lied to him before, she'd left him everything he might need for this time, a book if he really so desired it but Rory wasn't a big reader. The boy just stared ahead just letting the noise and morning pass around him until he heard someone say his name in a voice that was distinctly not his sister and he glanced a little nervously at it noticing it was the girl from the book shop, he wasn't sure what had happened, or if he liked her or not, she'd been disrespectful towards him, but this was a new day and Rory hadn't actually disliked it because of what had happened, he realised that he barely knew her and couldn't exactly form an opinion about her. The situation had been heightened and perhaps not what anyone had wanted, "Alaska?" he returned, a little unsure of her name, "Whit ye daeing?" he asked not moving his hands from within the pocket of his jumper but motioning to the fact it was early and she was up and about, and much like him appeared to be alone.

Alaska had unintentionally been holding her breath, she never really made one on one contact with others her age; nevertheless a boy her age. Shifting her weight from side to side, the blonde was unimaginably relieved when the boy recognized her, "Oh! I'm so glad it is actually you Rory!" Alaska had a faint smile on her face, "honestly, I don't really know. I heard the bustle from the street and came outside. I don't usually hear it all in Washington, you know? My family we live out of town" the American blushed, realizing she shared too much. "I've been craving a warm drink though, have you tried any places?" The cool air must be getting to me, I'm being too nice.

Rory wasn't sure what to make of her and watched her as she seemed relieved to see him, which he had to admit was a pretty odd feeling for him, considering how they'd last met, he would've figured he would be the last person she wanted to see, although perhaps that was more the two other boys who'd been in the book store with them. But, he just listened to what she was saying, feeling wary at the faint smile on her face, but returning a nervous one to her. He just continued listening thinking it just odd how she was speaking to him considering how it had been before, but perhaps that had just been an off day, he knew his sister had them, and his other sister used to have them too. Rory shook his head at the question, "A go where'er ma sister goes," he replied, "But a know whit ye mean wae the bustle," he added with his own fairly weak and small smile. He didn't think they had the same idea, "I'm fae a small magic toon called Bridge of Orchy, ne'er seen so many folk," he didn't think she'd know it, it was a tiny town in Scotland with so few people that it was mostly just his family, "A've been telt tae wait here fae ma sister,"

Alaska caught the boy's nervous smile, the blonde was being unusually sociable. Looking down, Alaska tried to ignore the blush creeping up her cheeks, "yeah, it's a bit unnerving to be completely honest," she smiled, a closed but genuine smile. "Me too! I'm from Walla Walla, Washington. It's a fair size, I think an odd thirty thousand people." Alaska didn't want to risk mispronouncing Rory's hometown's name. She was grateful to meet the Scottish boy again, she probably wouldn't voice it much more; but she was worried to have made a bad impression. The American was worried about the time, she had only left a petty note to her mother; and her little sister was sure to make up some theory. "You seem close with your sister, mine's nine... she can be a bit of a hassle at times."

Rory nodded at the statement and then couldn't help but chuckle at who many people where in her town, or near her, "That's a lot ae folk," the boy couldn't help but half inform her, "A've got aboot thirty folk in ma village," he wasn't used to the hustle and bustle of life in a place like this, he didn't sleep well with all the noise that surrounded them, it was why despite the clear lines of tiredness on his face he actually was very awake. The boy glanced back at her, running a hand along his chin as he thought about what to do, she was acting different that before and he didn't quite know how to deal with that, but he budged up slightly and indicated that she could sit with him, as he proceed to place both his hands back within the pocket, "Ma sister's twenty-two, ma da wants her tae look aafter me 'fore school starts," he told her with a small shrug, indicating that while he was close to her they weren't really her by choice.

Alaska grinned at the boy, she was quite funny wasn't she, "thirty? Like 3-0? That is tinyyyy!" The American blushed slightly, realizing she sounded like a star struck ditz. "Well, I think there's going to be a few more than thirty students in our grade." Alaska chuckled to herself, hoping Rory was going to Hogwarts with her.

The girl gave a closed smile, she gratefully plopped down next to the boy. "Thanks," Alaska said just over a whisper. Listening to the boy, the American was very content, "she sounds rather lovely, I can't imagine having an older sibling." she paused, adding quickly, "you know, being the older sister."

Rory couldn't imagine living in a place with thirty thousand people, his town had only been classed as a town because it had a church, when really it was what his parents called a hamlet, he didn't live in a large country though, so perhaps it was all relative, "A'm fae a small country," he replied with a shrug, thinking it not that odd that he had so few people in his town, and thinking it more odd, all the people who currently surrounded him in this busy so called village, and then he couldn't believe that there would be more than thirty people in their year group, "Actual?" he asked incredulously as if not actually believing her at all. He had never been around thirty other kids ever, in the store with the some five other people had been more than enough for him, he had barely been able to deal with it. This girl, Alaska who was acting so differently took the seat next to him and he just responded with a smile, listening as she began to respond to what he'd said about being an older sister, Rory was now an older brother, he had been for almost two years, he didn't mind his little brother, but he did get a lot of attention from his parents for being the youngest and also a baby, Rory didn't have much to worry about, "Am an older brother," he told her with a shrug, "But he's jus' wan," the boy told her, "Are ye goin' tae Hogwarts this year?"

Alaska was quite amused, Rory seemed to be interested in her "wealth" of knowledge; she felt better and better speaking with the Scottish boy. She realized they must've come from two very different backgrounds, America and Scotland. In someways the two couldn't have been brought up any more different. "I guess it is, I'm taking your word for it though Rory; I don't know much about Scotland." Alaska expressed openly. The American was getting a bit self-conscious, she was rarely this open with people. Nevertheless children her age, who are boys.

"Well, I suspect so!" Alaska stated matter-of-factually, "When my parents were at school, in America, they had quite a few students with them. I had always just assumed it be the same for me." The blonde shrugged, she had never thought of her school life being different from her parents'. "Although, mom and dad could be wrong." She tried to reassure the boy, who looked like a deer in headlights, plus there have been very few times both her parents were incorrect. "He sounds very sweet, I always wished for a younger brother. Marigold came instead!" The blonde giggled, she knew the relationship with her sister was strange. Somewhat bittersweet, although they somehow remained rather close.

Alaska was happy he asked about school, it was a topic she found easy to talk about. "Yeah, I am" she exhaled, "I've decided that I'm looking forward to Hogwarts." Alaska had to make that choice, because at first she was too nervous about the travel over to New Zealand. "Wait! You're going to, right Rory?" The blonde asked, rather concerned. She rarely made anything near a friend, Alaska didn't want to have him leave now.

Rory wasn't all that surprised by the fact that Alaska didn't know anything about Hogwarts, he wasn't that surprised at all, since he'd found that his country though important to him didn't matter to most outside of it. The young boy therefore didn't mind that she didn't know much, "Tha's alright, ah dinnae know anythin' aboot America," he responded with a small shrug, he wasn't even trying to reassure her though it was what he ended up doing. The boy gave her a small smile before just listening along with what she was saying, the prospect of having so many other kids in his class was so odd to him, he hadn't ever been in a real class only ever taught with his cousins and siblings by his parents, or his uncles and aunts. He had never actually been in a classroom with dozens of more people and the thought of it, though he'd known it was coming definitely freaked him out. It made him feel nervous and shy about it and he wasn't even at school yet, he was still on the bench months before with Alaska just talking about it, he couldn't even process what she was saying about her sister with his mind just so focused on the prospect of having so many other children in his class, he just hoped the dorms that his sisters had told him about would be relatively smaller, a quieter and less busy place for him to go. The boy shook his head slightly before focusing on what she was saying again and then realised that she was talking about looking forward to being able to go. The boy nodded at her, "Aye," he said with a nod, "A was a'ppose tae go tae Hogwarts in Scotland, but ma da decided tha' I would be bet'er in New Zealand," he told him with a firm nod at her, "Am gonnae be a hufflepuff,"

Alaska rearranged her cardigan, the girl was excited at the idea of having a friend. It had never bothered her before, being alone; most of the time it was her choice. But something about sitting and chatting with Rory made her feel better, almost special. The blonde would never tell him that, not in a lifetime, but atleast she knew. Alaska's legs were swinging under the bench, with he hands placed comfortably in her lap. "I don't think you'd like it much, to be honest" Alaska spoke, a little more frankly than intended but continued anyways, "Everyone's is so loud and worried about nice clothes or something else, it's so busy, almost frantic." she half-joked, "Three hundred and fifty million people live in America, it's pretty crazy! " Alaska blushes slightly, embarrassed to speak of her homeland in such a way. The American surprisingly didn't miss home as much as she thought she would, probably because she was still close to the ocean. The salty air tasted better than any other, Alaska was convinced. "Thats nice," The blonde had wondered why New Zealand when Hogwarts Scotland was right there. "I can see that. Probably gonna end up in Slytherin, I don't tend to make the best first impressions; apparently all the rude people get placed there." Alaska didn't know wether that was fact or fiction, but the words tumbled out of her lips before she could stop them

Rory smiled at her as she said that he wouldn't like it and then explained why he wouldn't like, though Rory didn't like the idea of this girl assuming what he would or wouldn't like it was intriguing to hear why she thought he wouldn't like it and he had to say that by what she was saying he really wouldn't like it. Rory knew that his home was far small, far less busy but he didn't often go the main cities he remained in the magical area of them. The small boy toyed with the end of the jumper pocket threads, as he thought about it and though he was getting used to crowds, he didn't know how he would take a classroom or even just anything scenario, perhaps it would be easier than his mind said it was going to be. At her insistance that she was going to be placed in Slytherin because she was rude and he just shook his head, "I dinnae no how right tha' is but I dinnae 'hink yer rude," he told her firmly, "Plus ma cousins wis a slytherin and she's no bad or rude," of course perhaps it was just that she wasn't rude to him but he didn't think she had to just say she was rude and that would mean she'd end up in slytherin, "You've nae respect fae folk when ye get annoyed but ye could just be a Gryffindor,"

Alaska relaxed into the bench, but then sat up again. She didn't want to seem rude and slouching wasn't exactly polite. The American tried to keep her worry to herself, she had never fussed about sorting before; she couldn't figure out why it was bothering her all of a sudden. "Thanks," she whispered, grateful that the boy didn't dislike her. "Ha! You'd be surprised, I'm annoyed most of the time." she smiled, it was true. Atleast he was able to see her good side.

Rory wasn't sure why this girl seemed so critical on herself, what was wrong with being upset or annoyed, he definitely didn't think sorting was that big of a deal and he though all the houses were amazing, he knew he was to end up in Hufflepuff but that was in large part due to tradition, and tradition was a pretty big aspect of his life. The boy didn't want to end up anywhere else but he didn't think any of the other houses were bad at all, and just because this girl thought herself rude didn't mean she was inevitably going to be a slytherin, but she seemed grateful for what he'd said and then admitted that she was annoyed most of the time, which he didn't understand, "How?" he asked, wondering why she was so annoyed all of the time, what annoyed her, it didn't make sense that she was so annoyed about things. Rory wasn't often annoyed, or he liked to think that he wasn't often annoyed about things.
