Daniella had never liked school. It had always been too suffocating for the young girl - muggle school that is. In Hogwarts though, Dani didn't quite feel the same about school as she did a year ago. Perhaps it was because she was away from her parents - sure she missed them and felt a little homesick every now and then, but really, that was bearable. She was cherishing her freedom in this school, and aside from that, she didn't really feel all that different from anybody in the school even if one of her parents is a muggle. It was nothing that she strictly had to keep hidden after all, a lot of the kids in school had a muggle relative or two. And aside from that, she was studying things that she actually liked to learn - magic. Sure History was kind of a bummer but other than that really, Dani loved wizarding school more than she ever liked muggle school.​

Except for doing homework really. Who even likes doing homework? They were the bane of existence of every student out there - aside from the dreaded exams of course. She had to wonder if professors actually like giving this stuff out and reading them all. She couldn't imagine the horror right now. Writing them was horror right now as it is. She did like learning and reading as much as the next person but being forced to do it to get a good mark was just something that Dani never really liked. But well, a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do. So the young Gryffindor had chosen to spend the wonderful day in the Courtyard. It was quiet, not too crowded and a very relaxing place to top it all off. Homework was just the downside today and as she sat down on one of the benches in the secluded corner of the Courtyard and began looking through one of the three books she had brought down, Dani started on her schoolwork and appreciated the peace the place had to offer.​

Daintree knew that he could get started on some of the homework, he spotted others, students his age or older already beginning on homework, which Dain wasn’t overly sure about. It was so early in the year, only those upper year students with big important exams really needed to do homework. Dain wasn’t sure why anyone his own age would be doing homework. He wasn’t sure why a school would be setting homework so early, especially when for someone like him, he wasn’t even at the base level of knowledge for any of his classes. There was no prior knowledge in his head, so even beginning on some of the work he would have to do a little reading, which Dain was not keen for, he didn’t want to have to do any work, or any more than was absolutely necessary. Dain had pretty much decided that this school and it’s weird subjects were not things he needed to learn, they weren’t what he wanted. If he intended to return to muggle school in the next year then he needed to keep those subjects up not the ones here. Though even in saying that, it wasn’t like he’d do anything for that either, studying and revision didn’t look particularly cool, so he wasn’t really about to do either.​

Dain was heading outside, walking up from the slytherin common and heading out to the grounds, he liked the outdoors, it was a nice place, there was plenty for him to explore and even with the slightly worse winter weather there was still plenty to do and he was kind of pleased at least that the whole grounds were free to explore and good fun too. Dain walked out to the courtyard and spotted a girl sitting there with a few books around her. It was clear she was doing homework or some revision of some kind. The slytherin decided that he’d go speak to this girl instead of continuing on outside, any reason to make more friends with people, he needed to be sure that his friend group was both wide and big. Dain headed over to her, ”Isn’t it a little early in the year to already be doing homework?” the slytherin said to her, there was a friendliness to his tone.​

Daniella hadn't been working that long in the Courtyard before the relative peace that she was enjoying was interrupted. It was interesting that people here just came up to others and start random conversations - a part of her was reminding her that this was how people made friends. Or enemies. Then again, it wasn't very often that she actually tried to socialize with other people, if anything her rather shy and awkward nature, she tended to avoid it. Dani stopped writing her homework to look up to the person that had approached her. A boy her age it seemed, probably from one of the other houses considering that she hadn't really seen him in the Gryffindor Common Rooms. She pondered on his question for the moment and shrugged. "I didn't want to be buried in school work trying to catch up," she said as she scooted over to the side of the bench bringing her books with her in order to make place for the boy in case he wanted to take a seat. "The subjects are pretty interesting anyways - different," she commented with a small smile, trying to reciprocate the friendliness of the other.

Daintee looked at her as she explained why, he could maybe understand why she wouldn’t want that, but it was still reasonable, ”But it’s still like day one, you won’t be too far behind surely,” the slytherin countered with a little smile, ”Plus we’re first years, how much can they throw at us during week one,” The slytherin had never been particularly studious in his last school and he didn’t particularly plan to do so in this school either. When she continued he frowned, interesting. The boy took the freed up seat next to her, ”You think so? Which are you interested in?” the boy asked. He couldn’t think of any of the subjects that he found interesting, they were all just subjects with different names and absolutely no reference to anything that actually mattered, like his old subjects had no matter how annoying they were to actually study. The slytherin had to say he was curious about what someone else might look forward to in the dregs of the classes that they had. In his mind they would all be useless, especially when he went back to muggle school once this year was over.​

Daniella thought about the boy's statement for a bit and acknowledged that she may have been overreacting a little bit. She was never really this excited about anything concerning muggle school, but she was finding wizarding school much more fun and looking forward to it. So maybe, she wasn't used to this level of being scared of failing when she was actually liking something. "Maybe, some of the professors are scary though," she said with a small smile. And really, it was because of the scary professors that was making her paranoid about the amount of work that would be given by the professors. "Not much likely unless it's just one homework with a really, really long essay," she said with a nervous chuckle after hearing it actually happen to some of the older students. She hoped that her professors weren't actually that bad, but then again they could be. She didn't voice any of these thoughts though, it was nice to be talking with someone her age and not being scared about accidental magic - or blurting about the wizarding world. She took a moment to think about the boy's question about which subject she actually found interesting. "Mhmm.. I think Defence Against the Dark Arts is interesting although Professor Styx is a bit scary," she said honestly, although she actually was looking forward to the future lessons even if the man teaching was downright terrifying.

Dain listened to what she said, and shrugged a little. He had never found professors or teachers to be scary, even the ones that were strict. He just thought it was a little silly to be afraid of professors, ”They probably seem scarier than they actually are, professors can’t actually hurt us,” the boy countered, he could say that about his last school with some certainty but couldn’t obviously know for certain that it would work in the magical world. ”At best they can yell at you,” Dain shrugged a little. The boy had never been particularly keen on being yelled at by teachers but it hadn’t mattered all that much before. In this place if he got yelled at he would use it as leverage to get himself out. ”What could we even write a long essay about? None of us know any magic,” the boy thought she was doing work that was just completely unnecessary. This girl didn’t need to be working away at stuff on day one, ”I know that there’s like nothing else to do in school, but anything would be better than studying or doing homework,” the boy had a little of frustration directed at what the school. At the class she liked, the boy just shrugged, ”He’s the head of slytherin house, he’s not that bad. I think he appeared meaner than he actually is, or more so, he probably doesn’t care,” Dain shrugged a little, ”All of the classes sound really dumb at this school,”​

Daniella listened through the boy's comments about the professors. Of course, she knew that the professors couldn't hurt them - it didn't however take away their intimidating factor. Or her knowledge that they were people of authority and for good reason. She kept the small bit to herself though that the professors could hand out detentions as well, and point deductions - she didn't want to go through either considering that it would make her very, very noticeable and she didn't really mind blending in the crowds as a first year - or that she didn't like crowds in particular, or being noticed in a negative light for that matter. "I don't particularly like being yelled at," she mumbled however. The girl shrugged however at the boy's question - she was pretty sure however that there could be a long essay written about something in the first year classes. Not every one of the classes actually needed magic after all - like History, Astronomy and Herbology - all of which however were her classes in the next term. She couldn't particularly agree however with Professor Styx pretending to be mean - she was pretty sure he actually is mean. But then again, the boy would be dealing with the scary man more than she would since she wasn't a Slytherin and thank Merlin for that. She frowned however at the boy's statement. "Not dumb. Just different."​

Daintree nodded at her, ”Well, if someone yells at you, get me and I’ll yell back,” the boy replied. Daintree could understand not enjoying being yelled at, but he’d yelled at plenty of people, teachers and students alike. He’d always tried to be likeable and keep a good group of friends but occasionally that required him to yell a little. If Daniella didn’t want to do it, then he would. He was unafraid of what punishment he could get for it, with no loyalty to his school house or this school, so to him it wouldn’t really matter. The slytherin just looked at her, when she insisted it was different, and not dumb, but he didn’t agree. ”Sure because learning about how to make a potion which I’m certain could be bought is far more important than learning about the chemicals that make up this world. Or about simple mathematics so we can actually count out how much we need of each thing,” the boy replied. He didn’t like maths particularly or chemistry but they were more interesting and useful that any of the classes they were doing in this school. It wasn’t like there was even a mixture of the classes, having them practice some english, doing some proper reading, get taught how to write an essay. Those were good and useful things, magic was just dumb. It didn’t matter that maybe occasionally it looked cool.​

Daniella had to blink a couple of times at the boy's statement. She even had to stop herself from checking if there was something in her ear because she wasn't quite sure she heard that right. She didn't even know if he was actually serious or not but one thing was for sure, the boy in front of her was a very confusing individual indeed. She did imagine though what would happen if a professor yelled at her for some indiscretion or another and she went and actually got this boy that volunteered to yell back at her. The Gryffindor grimaced. It didn't make for a pretty picture. "I wouldn't want you to get in trouble," she said carefully as she was still rather unsure on how she was supposed to react to that statement. "But thank you, I suppose," she said with a small smile. Dani continued to listen as the boy ranted about him being against potions and being all for chemicals - she blanched at that - and Math. "I guess I can agree with the math part. I don't know about the chemicals though," Dani admitted rather thoughtfully. Although she supposed that the reason they didn't really take it up in Hogwarts was because the school assumed that students were already prepared during their upbringing to be able to read, write and do their maths. They did start school at eleven after all. Perhaps some were even sent to muggle school like her before they started their wizarding education. Or maybe their was a school for magical folks before they entered Hogwarts - like a preparatory school? Dani shrugged at the thought and went back to the topic at hand, "Sciences dealing with the intricate details weren't really my strong suit," she muttered. She really did not like her time in muggle school though she could say that it had its merits, since she did learn some. Still though, she was quite glad to be out of there and was more than contented to be studying in Hogwarts now. With that said however, she just remembered that she still had no clue about this boy's name. And since they had been talking for a while now, Dani saw no harm in introductions - even if it was slightly late. "I'm Daniella, by the way," she said rather unsure if she should hold out her hand or something. She was still new to this whole introducing yourself to another person in a one-on-one setting. She settled for just smiling, she didn't want it to be awkward if he didn't take her hand if she did hold it out.​

Daintree shrugged, he didn’t like this school anyway, and if this helped firm up his friendship with this girl. He didn’t imagine she would ever take him up on it but it might at the very least helping him make good friendships. The slytherin smiled at the girl, ”Course, kids gotta stick together,” he said to her even if she wouldn’t really believe him. The boy nodded at her as she seemed to both agree and then not be so sure about the chemicals part of it. He admittedly hadn’t done that much science or chemistry related things but he hadn’t gotten the chance to. Plucked out of the muggle world before he could learn any of it seriously. He looked at her, ”What were you good at?” the boy asked, a certain level of genuine interest in whatever her response would be. He didn’t often talk about muggle school or his muggle life. Since it just didn’t seem to result in much with most but perhaps they would be able to talk about it more with the right people and perhaps he just hadn’t met the right people yet for it. So, he asked the girl, Daniella. The boy smiled at her and held out his hand to her, ”Daintree,” he knew his name was a little particular but he didn’t really care, ”Our names are relatively similar. Does anyone can you Dani?” the boy asked. His closest friends called him Dain, but that was only people he invited to call him that and no one yet at hogwarts had merited the honour yet. Not that he really intended to give anyone at this school the honour, after all he wouldn’t be here too long. ​
