Never Better

Two games and Jean hadn't been able to play in either one, despite one of the captains practically promising him that he would. At least that's what he'd gotten from the brief conversation during their victory party. The second year sighed and continued trudging up the steps, beating himself up for the missed passes during practice that had obviously led to the decision to bench him while first years got to play. Gryffindor had won which was great but he wanted to be a part of that process, wanted to prove why he'd made the team.

The young Gryffindor knew that what bugged him the most was the fact that his brother had played in not one but both games for his team. Lucien was already better than him at everything. Jean just wanted to be just as good, no better, at one thing. He didn't know why that was so much to ask. It was obvious that it was though because he wasn't better at anything. Lucien enjoyed reminding him of that too. Kicking at an eraser that someone had dropped, Jean watched as it rolled a bit and then stopped. Stepping outside, Jean moved towards an empty bench and sat heavily, his arm on his knee and his head leaning against his hand.
