All things considered, last year had been... fine. If she ignored the fact that she was still stuck at Hogwarts, Celia could admit that last year had gone well for her. She'd accomplished most of the things she wanted. The one exception had been the dueling tournament. Though the outcome of that unfortunate event hadn't really been her fault, Celia was determined to do everything in her power to ensure it wouldn't happen again. She knew she was one of the smartest in her year, but that alone wouldn't be enough. Sydney's story about being disqualified for getting punched had stuck with Celia, and she knew she would have to be at least ten times better than everyone else to even get a fair shot.
That was nothing new. Her mom had drilled that lesson into her early on, and Celia had spent her whole life competing on uneven playing fields. She just had to work harder and smarter, which would be easy considering her competition was mostly arrogant and unremarkable boys like Louis and Rhys. To prepare for next semester's tournament, Celia had brought a stack of psychology and spell books to the dueling chamber. She didn't want to just knock her opponents out — a simple stupefy could accomplish that. She wanted to be able to psych them out, to intimidate them. Summoning a snake last year had been a good start, but she was sure she could do more.
Celia flipped through one of the more advanced books, the Expulso Curse catching her eye. She twirled her wand experimentally before pointing it at a dummy. "Expulso." Nothing happened, but that wasn't surprising. The curse was advanced enough that even she knew she probably wouldn't master it before the tournament. But maybe her opponents didn't need to know that. Maybe she could make them think that she knew how to blast them to bits.
