Seamus didn't know why he'd been suggested for the pen pal's programme, he wasn't exactly in need of more work to do. Perhaps the head of house thought him lonely or something, even though he wasn't. He chose to not bother having too many friends, it was an active choice for him. Seamus had decided to at least send one, so that he wouldn't get into trouble. Afterwards he could just ignore letter which came. He wrote something simple, a simple introduction, and that was all he ever intended to write. The extent of what he would write. He sent it off in with his owl and half hoped to never get a response.

Hi random person,

I'm Seamus, I have been asked to write a letter to you. I go to Hogwarts New Zealand. I'm a Slytherin, so do with that what you want.

I'm on the quidditch team, as a beater, and that's all there is to know about me.

Dusk was sure that the only reason she was put in this program was to spite her. The petite Slytherin was a model student, sort of. As long as they didn't put her in group projects. She wasn't anti-social, other people could just be irritating. But she yielded when her professor told her it was mandatory that she at least try. So when she recieved her letter she decided to just write back, in her slightly cursive slightly not handwriting.

Hello random person named Seamus,

Let's see. I'm a Slytherin and I am not on the quidditch team because flying makes me queasy. I have a sister in New Zealand, so like I hear it's warm all the time. Uhm.... were you forced into this too?

Thanks,
Dusk

PS: Here's a photo of me so you know I'm not some 50 year old professor being a weirdo.

Really the last thing Seamus had expected was a response, and a response with a photo. The person, Dusk, seemed fine. She was admittedly cute by her picture but he didn't want to base his whole opinion on her on just that. Though it helped. He wrote a response, taking a little while to put it together and taking a bit of time to get a picture too. But he did, eventually reply

Hello Dusk,

I only started flying, and playing quidditch because the school had no other sports, and unfortunately, sports is all I'm good at. So, you've lucked out and gotten the least nerdy guy to write to.

It can be warm, we're on the south Island, so it can also get cold and wintery. I don't mind it like that. Nothing like a moody day to feel good.

I was. I haven't 'socialised' a lot. Which is mostly because there's no point. Everyone here is a friend of conenvience. They just live with me, and I refuse to bow to social pressure and just 'be nice' for the sake of it.

Is the other Hogwarts like that too? I bet it is.

Anyway, that was a nice picture, so I have included one of myself which I took over the break.

Okay..goodbye...

Seamus

Dusk had almost thought maybe he didn't like her photo. Or maybe she made herself too suspicious, after all, wouldn't someone trying to lure another person try and reassure them. Hmm. Maybe she didn't have good people skills and needed to better them. She did finally receive a letter and was shocked. She sat on the floor in the owlry reading it before deciding on a reply.

Seamus,

I'd like to say that you're probably good at more but I don't actually know that. But like, it's cool that you're good at sports. I used to do a little running group as a kid. A younger kid anyways. Now I get winded going up the stairs.

Winter is my favorite season. I wish we got more snow, I want to visit somewhere that gets a lot and try skiing. Do you prefer the heat or the cold?

Yeah I mean sort of. I don't know, I haven't bothered to make a lot of friends. I'm better at doing stuff by myself anyways. Plus I have Goblin blood so some people don't wanna be around someone mixed like that. But hey, we're 'friends' of inconvenience so like... at least we got that going for us.

Diggin the big hair.

Seamus had kept the picture of the girl, Dusk. He wasn't entirely sure why but it was just in his bedside drawer gathering dust and taking up space, but he kept it, keeping it seemed like the right thing to do. Seamus was surprised to get a letter back. He was sure that these would stop, that she would grow bored of him and move on. THe slytherin took the new letter and read it over. He then took a few days to respond.

Dusk,

The good thing about my skill being sports is that I can just lift you up the stairs - due to my superior strength. Although with magic we can probably float up stairs.

I like the late autumn, when the nights are longer but not too long. When it's rainy and the leaves are all orange and brown, creating a mess on the ground. I like a good dreich day. Though a sunny day every now and then is good too. Snow is too bright. Aren't you in Scotland, in the wilderness, has it stopped snowing occasionally?

People suck. It's better to do things alone. I have a twin and he's my one exception. I'd do things with him, but a lot of the time I'd rather be alone. I don't mind it, but I don't have the issue of being incorrectly exiled for something I cannot help.

My hair is very floofy and big. It keeps me warm.

Do you have duelling? Do you take part in that?

Signing off letters is dumb. I'm done now, goodbye.

Dusk was surprised when after a number of days a letter came for her at breakfast. She took it, almost not expecting it to be from him, but it was Seamus. She smiled a little, earning some teasing remarks at the table. Nothing a hex wouldn't fix. Though it earned her detention, and there she sat in detention, writing her reply.

I'm writing you from jail (detention) it's been weeks (an hour) since I've seen the outside world. Food is slim (they won't let me snack) and morale is dropping (the professor doesn't think I'm funny).

Anyways. Carrying me up the stairs with or without magic would be a feat I think. Though flattering of you to offer.

Autumn is nice. i like stepping on the crunchy leaves and hearing the crackling. Plus my family soemtimes has little fire pits and roasts things over it. It's kind of fun. As far as snow here in the wilds we get a lot of sleet I feel like. But if you've ever seen an postcard from the mountains there's snow everywhere. Snow you could get buried in. I think that's much nicer.

If you could be exiled for something, what do you think it'd be? Certainly not your hair of warmth. (that was a joke...)

Anyways yeah we do dueling, I'm not very good at it. I'm hoping instead I can just keep turning teapots into tortoises and raise an army. What about you, are you some super suave dueling champion and that's why you're a loner?

Aww revua, or however it's spelled,
Dusk

Seamus really kept expecting his letter to leave the school and for him to not get anything back. Each break between them, he told himself to care less. To not be as bothered with it. Each time, he was proven wrong by another letter arriving. He thought it was funny that she had written this letter from detention. He ended up writing a response pretty quickly, though he waited a couple of days before sending it.

I hope you have been freed from jail (detention) by the time this letter reaches you. If you haven't, I will have to stage a prison break.

Fire pits are fun, I enjoy a good fire. I have been close to the area where Hogwarts is. My family was originally from Edinburgh, and we moved to New Zealand when I was like 10. I kinda miss it. Well, I miss Edinburgh and football being the sport people play.

Exiled....is this a decision between what I would like to be exiled for or what would be more likely to lead to my exile. The first is probably banning quidditch (i love it now, but football remains superior) and the second is probably killing someone over my brother.

I am not a duelling champion, I've won a couple of rounds, but never the tournaments, its just more interesting than studying. I'm equally not good at it, and if someone does that spell that causes your hair to disappear, I'm afraid I will be exiled for one, being ugly without hair, and two, murdering my opponent and taking their hair.

Transfiguration sucks. Our professors are terrible. So dull and the lectures are so boring. Is that your favourite class?

It's almost the end of the year, got any plans for the break?

Alright well, I'm done here.

Bye
Seamus

Dusk found herself getting excited for the letters to come and couldn't help but smile when an owl dropped off another to her. She read it over, and at the last question couldn't help but think for a moment. Wasn't she due to visit her Aunt? Should she mention that she'd be in New Zealand. After a full day of contemplation she wrote back.

A prison break? Would a ski mask fit over that floofy hair? Anyways I appreciate it but they freed me. Though no guarantee I wont end up there again.

So do you have some weird mixed accent, half Scottish and half new Zealander? I've always been told I have a heavy accent by people who didn't originate in Scotland. Start a football club at your school! Then you don't have to miss it!

Wow you've already contemplated murder, fascinating. I'll pretend like I knew nothing when they take me in for questioning. (I hope my jokes convey well).

Anyways, I was wondering when would be a good time to bring up that I'm going to be in New Zealand for the summer with my aunt. Maybe this sounds dumb but we could totally meet at an ice cream shop or something... Be easier than writing letters to the unknown right?

Anyways... Yeah.
stay tuned,
Dusk

Seamus was getting things wrapped up at the end of the semester, he knew there were things he needed to be getting to but was absolutely not getting to any of them. Though in all of that, he wasn't at all ever going to revise for his exams. If he passed he passed, if he failed he failed. So the letter was a welcome distraction. He was surprised that she would be in the area, and wondered whether to say yes to meeting her. It would be nice to see her, and she was nice, but would it be too forward to immediately say yes. He gave it a day before he replied.

Of course. The ski mask would have a section for my hair - like a hair net. But thankfully, they have freed you, so you no longer require my assistance. But if you need it next time.

I've never asked anyone if my accent is weird. Maybe I should, though I doubt anyone would be honest with me really. I probably do have a slightly weird one, you'll be the judge of that.

It would be fun to meet up, when you're about. It'll be winter here, so it sucks that you'll miss summer, but yeah. That could be fun. I worked over last break, and refuse to over this one...So yeah...I'll be seeing you soon and you can judge my accent for me.

Yeah. I had more to say, but I can save it, so I have things to fall back on in case you're really dull in-person.

Okay. Bye.
