Willow circled her new house, her small daughter following her around. It was a small appartment in the north east of America, in Maine, and as Willow had just left her partner she had needed a new home for herself and her daughter.
"What do you think?" she asked Kat, throwing her small black bag on a nearby sofa.
The room was bare and needed alot of work, but it would do for now. She just wanted her daughter to be happy, and to grow up well, as all mothers would. Kat may have been young but acting like she was older was a good start.

"I'm not sure, mammy," Kat said, resting her tiny hand on her hips.
She stared about the place, taking in her surroundings. "It doesn't smell like home."
Kat stalked after her mother, turning to one wall at which she glared.
"Mammy, this paint is crumbling. We need to get this place sorted.. Where's my room?"
The small girl's eyes darted about the place keenly.

Willow went to check upstairs. Taking them two at a time she reached the top in no time. Upstairs was a small cold bathroom. and two bedrooms. The first bedroom was no bigger than the bathroom, and had oddly shaped walls. The other was slightly bigger, although had a few dents in the walls. "Up here darling" she called down, sticking her head back in the smaller room. "We can make it beautiful later. Let's just make sure we have all our furniture first before we go on a painting spree. What colour do you want your room?" she asked, as she headed back downstairs.

There was a small kitchen at the back of the house, which led out to a tiny over-ridden garden. The movers were just bringing in boxes through the front door, which was in no better state than the rest of the house. Willow was glad she'd stopped Kat going into school before now, as she wouldn't have to go through the trouble of changing schools.

Kat followed her mother upstairs after a moment and peered into the room soon to be hers.
It was dark, plain and cold. "Purple or pink." Kat said with a smile.
It could look nice with a little work.

Back downstairs, Kat stared at her surroundings.
It wasn't exactly the ideal home but it wasn't like they had a very big budget.
Kat, though she was only four, understood that money was not something to be thrown away.
She sat in the center of the room, her legs and arms folded.
"I want to go to the park." She said grumpily.

Willow looked down at her sulky daughter as she was sat in the middle of the living room. "Well we can, just as soon as we've unpacked okay." she bent down to pick her up, and balanced her on her hip and she went back passed the front door. "Do you have any idea where you put your shoes?" she asked, hunting around through a couple of chest of drawers than had already been delivered. Kat hadn't worn any in the car, and Willow was cursing to herself.

She pulled out a small pair of pink and white trainers, and gave them to Kat to hold on to. "Your clever right?" she said, looking at her daughters little eyes. "Here," she gave her the keys from her pocket and gave them to Kat too. "Go unlock the car, put your shoes on and wait for me in there. I'll be along in a moment" she gave her little head a kiss before putting her down.

Willow wandered into the living room again, to pick up her bag, and after having a small word with one of the movers, followed her daughter down the garden path.

Kat walked out side, key in hand and shoes.. Well, shoes in arms as her hand were too small to carry her shoes.
She dropped them in front of the car before attempting to unlock it.
It took a moment of random stabbing with the key gripped in her tiny fist before she managed to find the place to insert the keys and turn them.
Kat managed to pull open the door, stumbling a little and climbed inside.
She tugged on her tiny trainers, having to sit in the drivers seat to put them on.
It was then that one of Kat's small elbows hit the button for the horn. It beeped loudly and she pretty much jumped in the air.

As her mother was getting nearer, Kat was crying.
"Maaammy!" She wailed, her face screwed up with tears.
She reached out for a hug. She needed to be comforted after her scare.

Willow opened the drivers door to find Kat sitting there, in a bit of a mess, with tears streaking her face. "It was just the horn." She picked up her daughter and put her in the passenger seat, strapping her in and she herself climbed in. "Can't take you anywhere" she said jokily, rubbing her small elbow.

As Willow turned back she caught a glimpse of something in the rearview mirror. Black. It had dissapeared almost as quickly as it had appeared. Willow turned to look out the back window but saw nothing. Giving a reassuring smile to Kat she headed out into the road.

Kat sat through the journey until they reached their destination.
The tears had been re-absorbed into her skin and had left little trails of salt crystals.
She rubbed at her face, getting rid of the remaining crystals, she sat up straight and kicked her legs about.
"Are we there, mammy?" she asked, trying to see out of the window.

Willow was driving although wasn't really concentrating. Her mind was on what she'd just seen. She hadn't seen one of those, for about 12 years, how could they be here? Now?. Her mind only came back to earth when Kat aked if they were there. "Nearly" she said, going round a corner into a small car park. Willow hadn't used her magical powers for a few years, and she knew Kat had no idea about the magical world yet. She didn't want her finding out until she was a little older at least. "Do you believe in your fairy tales?" she asked her, parking the car.

Kat, who had been scrabbling at the window to see out, suddenly stopped.
She sat down in her seat, looking to her mother.
"A-about unicorns and-and fairies?" she asked curiously.
"Yes, mammy," Kat said after a moment. "Why?"

"Yes. How about werewolves, and magical people? How about giants?" she asked, interested in what her daughter believed. She exited the car and wandered round to the other side, keeping an eye out incase the, thing, came back. Willow may not have done magical much, but she always had her wand with her, incase she needed to protect anyone, especially Katie. If Kat ever asked her what it was, which she had done once before, Willow had simply told her she needed it to poke naughty children. That at the time was sufficient.

She let Kat out the car, and locked up. "Go on then." she said. The park had a wide grassy area beside it, and Willow found a nice tree to sit under, just a little way away from the park. Willow sat and watched her daughter play, who was occasionally giving her a smiley wave.

Kat decided to take time to think about the answer.
She ran over the climbing equipment a few times, swinging from the monkey bars.
After five minutes, she joined her mother at the tree.
"Yes, mammy," She said finally, "I do believe.." She wondered why her mother wasn't telling her why she was asking these things.

Willow gave her daughter some money, as there was a small ice cream van at the end of the park. "Good" she smiled to her daughter. It was the easiest way of her begining to understand.

When Kat was at the van, the dementor caught her eye again. She stood up, checking her daughter wouldn't be following, before hunting after it. What would it be doing around here? she thought. She had reached for her wand when it appeared out in front of her. Willow pointed her wand at it. "Leave us alone! Why are you following us?!" se couldn't stay and chat for too long, it would start to take over her mind..taking away every good memory she had..
"Expectro, Patronum!" she called, and a huge clear beam wrapped itself around the dementor, forcing it away.

Willow was breathing heavily, glad she'd actually managed to remember the spell. She would have to go to Diagon Alley, find the minister for magic. At least there were no muggles around this small area to watch her.

Hurrying back to the park, she hunted for her daughter. "Kat!" we have to go. Willow cursed again, wishing they could have used brooms, as she took her tiny hand, the other still attached to her ice cream, and strapped her into the back of the car. "We have to go darling. I've remembered...something" she said hastily, climbing into the driving seat.

Kat smiled at her mother, took the money and walked to the ice cream van.
She ordered herself a strawberry ice cream and paid.
Kat turned, licking her ice cream, feeling quite cold, to see something by her mother.
Something dark. Black. Cold and deeply disturbing.
She just stared at it. It was so wrong.
Kat turned away, just for a moment and once she looked back, the thing was gone and her mother was running towards her.

Kat was quickly strapped into the back of the car.
"Mammy?" Kat asked nervously, having dropped her ice cream before she got into the car.
"Mammy? What's wrong?"

If Willow was going to keep her daughters powers hidden from her, she was going to have to think fast. "We're...we're going to go on a small holiday. To Europe" she turned to give her daughter a smile.

They arrived back at their house, "Stay here, i'll get your things." she said, and ran into the house. Their clothes were still in bags and Willow quickly put a few in the boot of her car.

Getting back in she turned to Katie. "Listen, all your fairy stories. They're real. Somewhere in the world, everything you've read about, these things exsist. Now, what did you see at the park?" she asked, wondering if she had even seen the dementor.

Kat stared at her mother.
"But.. But we only just came here, mammy," she said, utterly confused.
There was silence until they reached the house and Kat sat tight while her mother collected her things.
She watched her mother shoving everything into the boot and her getting back into the car.
Kat blinked at her mother. So much to take in for such a young girl.
"I saw.. I saw a man.. well, I think it was a man.. He had a black cloak..."
Kat fell silent. She was staring past her mother. "Mammy," she said, slowly, "There's a man outside your window."

The coldness was flooding the car. The creature stood outside, the darkness staring in.
Watching them both, silent almost but for the slight crackling noise as it attempted to pull open the car door.

Willow had her eyes shut, She'd seen it. They snapped open when Kat mentioned something outside her window. She heard the cracking of the glass, as the cold air began to capture it. "No"
She turned, and sure enough the dementor was back. "Kate get out! Now!" Willow shouted. Their were doors both in the front and the back of the car, and Willow climbed out her own door.
Picking up Kat she crossed the road, putting her back on the pavement. She turned, her body covering her daughter. At least they wouldn't get cornered now. What if there were more of them? Willow got out a wand again. She knew it was risky, there could be muggles all around here, but she wasn't going to stand here and do nothing. She was pointing her wand straight at the dementor. Willow couldn't remember. But muggles can't see dementors. "Katie. Can you see him?" she asked. If she could, she was one of them. One of us. She grabbed her small hand, and forcing herself to try, remembering the three D's, she managed to dissapparate them.

Willow looked around them. She hadn't had time to tell her daughter what was going on, "I'm sorry" she said, realizing how that must of hurt her. "Katie. You're a witch. So am i. And this.." she looked around them. "Is diagon alley." It had been such a long time. She had tried to keep herself away.

Everything seemed to fly by so fast it made Kat's head spin.
One minute she was in the car, the next she was holding onto her mother, being pulled through the most unfamiliar parts of the universe.
And suddenly.. Light. Sound. People bustling by.

The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement.
Men and women alike wore flowing robes, the smell of food from the local pub floated through the air.
Young children were running through the streets playing with peculiar toys.
Some were even looking in the windows of shops at broomsticks.

Kat turned to her mother.
"Thank you, mammy." She said, giving her a hug.
The world in which she had once lost hope was now new and exciting.

Brushing some of the hair out of Kate's face she smiled, wrapping one arm around her. Steering her with her shoulders she monovered Kat around in front of her. Willow had no idea where she was supposed to be heading, she just needed to find the ministry of magic.

"I told you everything was true" she said, as they walked passed a rather elderly wizard with a long pointed hat.

They reached a tall white building and Willow pushed Kat inside. She wandered up to a front desk. "I, would like to report something. There was, a dementor, close to where we live. I thought they was supposed to stay close to Azkaban?" She began to have a convosation with the young boy behind the counter.

Katie skipped along, wanting to leave her mother's side and find somewhere to play.
She tried to slip her mother's grip while she was distracted. She managed to wriggle her hand out.
Katie turned to look about, preparing to run and find a play area.
