So, hellebore was used in the draught of peace, and asphodel was used in the draught of living death... Ugh. How was Freddie supposed to remember which one was which? He slid down further between the sofa cushions, stretching his leg out, trying to make it less tingly. Maybe the heavy book on it wasn't helping. Okay, so asphodel looked like a lily. Asphodel looked like a lily. Asphodel looked like a lily...

Ares didn't usually bother hanging around the library, but this close to the end of the semester it was probably wise to be. With an armful of revision notes (most admittedly written by other students rather than himself) he was on his way to the nearest empty table when he spotted Freddie cosied up on the couch. What he seemingly didn't notice however, was that his leg was stuck out in the gangway. It was only when Ares tripped straight over his shoe, parchment flying out of his hands, the lid of his inkwell popping off and decorating his robes in dark blue, and the first year's knees hit the floor with an almighty crunch, that Ares knew a mistake had been made. The Gryffindor groaned and rolled to the side, clutching at his knee with now empty hands, half convinced something had dislocated.

Ares! Oh, no - Freddie lifted his book, shielding his face from the flying globs of ink. When the splattering noises stopped, he slowly looked over the spine. Was Ares hurt? He definitely tripped on purpose - he could've just gone round - but his knee went crunch pretty loud. He was such a big dramatic baby all the time, Freddie couldn't tell if he was faking it now or not. "Get up," he said, nudging Ares' shin with his foot. "Idiot. That was your fault."

Ares hadn't tripped on purpose, although he was certainly going to milk the situation now for what it was. It was just a benefit that it would be Freddie that would be punished for being so selfish. "AAAAAH," Ares let out a loud wail as Freddie practically kicked the poor man while he was down. He had no respect for the fact he was injured. He rolled on the floor, seemingly eager to get away but unable to stand on his injured leg. "Help!" The library was quiet enough that surely it wouldn't be hard to attract some attention.

No no no no. "Shut up!" Freddie said. Should he just run? He didn't do anything! He was just sitting there! No-one was gonna believe that - Ares would say he tripped him on purpose. Professor Josephs would be so mad. No, no, Freddie was trying to be good, he hadn't been in any trouble, and now it was ruined. No-one would believe him. Something red hot balled up inside him, and suddenly he was on the ground, shoving Ares, trying to pin him down. "It doesn't hurt! Shut up! Stop lying! Stop it!"

Ares was a little surprised when Freddie came down to his level, pushing against his shoulders as though he had anywhere to go but further into the brick floor. He wasn't a stranger to an older sibling telling him to shut up, that he didn't hurt or that they hadn't hurt him. His yelling would summon their mom and since he was her favorite, it would more often than not be his sisters that ended up taking any blame. Was that what this was? Did Freddie have a little brother or sister too, and this was a panicked response to not get into trouble? "If I shut up, you owe me." He said quietly, just loud enough for Freddie to hear.

Rose glanced up from her History textbook when she heard someone yelling for help, eyes wide. She found the source of the screaming pretty quickly, only taking a few steps away from the table that she'd set up as base camp for that afternoon of self-study. What she saw however was Freddie leaning over Ares. Wasn't that the boy that he'd told her not to go near? Rose was quite sure Freddie wouldn't be near him on purpose, not if he could help it, although it was Ares shouting for help. She took a few steps gingerly closer to the situation, "Freddie!" She didn't want to presume, but this certainly didn't look as though it was in the Ravenclaw's favour. She trusted him though, and whatever this was about she was sure Freddie must have had good reason.

Gaia was walking into the library when she saw a familiar face, Rose. She wasn't sure if the two were exactly friends but maybe they could study together? Walking towards the Ravenclaw she heard commotion and stopped just next to the blonde eyeing up the scene. Instinctively the Slytherin put a hand in front of the other girl as she saw who the two boy's were. She didn't know one of the boy's but the other one? She did and she didn't want Rose in Ares' vicinity. No idea why she felt like keeping the girl out of the Gryffindor's clutches Gaia frowned at the two. "Get off the floor you two unless you want to end up in trouble." She spoke quietly, glaring at the boys. She had no doubt Ares was behind whatever this was.

What? Owed him what? So it didn't hurt? He was faking it? Freddie pushed even harder, digging his fingers into Ares' shoulders. He didn't want to owe Ares anything. He wasn't doing anything for Ares, not ever. "No," Freddie said, "shut up - you just shut up! Say I didn't trip you!"

He didn't see Rose, couldn't see her, but he heard her. Some other girl, too. They didn't get it. Freddie was in trouble anyway. If he let go, Ares was gonna tell on him. "Not 'til he says I didn't trip him! You walked into my leg!" He didn't care what Rose thought - he wasn't letting Ares mess with him any more. He had to make him stop. "Say it or I'll hit you!"

Ares was quite sure that Freddie was having a temper tantrum that even his own mom would have a hard time disciplining. Maybe Freddie's mom wasn't good at that sort of thing. "Didn't your mom ever tell you it's rude to tell someone to shut up?" he smirked, turning his head the best he could when he heard some other voices beside him. "Gaia!" How nice to see her. At least he had one witness and another girl who was looking at Freddie most disapprovingly. Freddie was still adamant about forcing his spine into the concrete by the looks of things, and Ares was doing his best to ignore the threats coming from the Ravenclaw's mouth. "I'm not sure I have a choice," he told her, unsure how either of them were going to get out of this in one piece at this rate. He glanced back down to Freddie who now had anger and ink plastered across his face. "I'm a Gryffindor, I don't tell lies."

Gaia watched the scene unfold, the Ravenclaw beside her just gawking at the two. She moved even further in front of the girl as the other Ravenclaw seemed to get angrier and angrier. Even if the rage was pointed at Ares, Gaia was not taking chances any of it being directed towards Rose. The Slytherin scoffed as Ares noticed her and yelled her name, giving him a small glare. "Get off of him. Threatening to hurt him won't help anyone and you," she turned to the Gryffindor. "Just because you are a lion doesn't mean you are always honest. Remember that time with the coin?" She was fairly certain the coin hadn't been Ares'.

Ares raised his eyebrows in appreciation of Gaia, who practically threw herself to his defense. He hadn't expected that from her of all people, but it was nice to know that she saw him as a friend, or at least friend enough to tell Freddie to get off him. It was true he wasn't always honest, Merlin he wasn't a Hufflepuff. "What coin?" he asked, oblivious, with no idea what the redhead was referring to. If she expected him to recall every last galleon he ever had then she was going to be in for a shock. As far as the Gryffindor could tell, he was either about to be punched by Freddie for not lying, or someone else was going to have to remove him from his person. Ares glanced back at the blonde girl who seemed to be shocked at the whole ordeal, "Don't just stand there! Get someone to help me get him off me if you're not strong enough to do it yourself!" He told her, before the wailing started up again.

Freddie's mom never told him anything. His mom was gone. He pushed Ares' shoulders down even harder, scared he was hurting him, glad he was hurting him. He was a liar! The burning thing inside Freddie was getting even hotter and angrier. He should just hit Ares - he said he would, and now he had to. But he didn't want to. Why didn't he just say it? Freddie punched him before. He'd do it again! "Shut up!" Freddie cried, as Ares started wailing again. Go away Rose, please go away Rose, please. "I'll hit you! I'll hurt you! You think it hurts? You think it hurts bad? I'll make it worse. Say I didn't do anything!"

In the midst of the chaos, no one seemed to be paying much attention to Rose. At least, Gaia had moved in front of her although the Ravenclaw wasn't exactly sure if she was trying to protect her from.. Freddie? Rose had taken the few seconds between Ares and Freddie arguing to try to clear up the space around them, just in case one of the librarians happened to be on their way over. Her head snapped back toward the boys when Ares tried to address her, and her pupil's ping ponged between the Gryffindor who was telling her to help him with Freddie, and her friend who clearly trying his best to hold himself together. Rose knew he'd hurt Ares if he had to, especially if it was for her benefit. He'd told her that, and he'd already proven it with Blanc. If Rose didn't do anything, Ares would be walking out of here with a fresh bruise and Freddie with a bruised ego. She skirted around Gaia, striding across to Freddie and pausing at his side, not even gracing Ares' with her attention, and bent down so her head was in line with Freddie's. "Don't make it worse," she told him. Their conversation at the park had to mean something. He had to trust her enough to listen. "Come with me, and we fix this a different way," she had siblings, she knew how annoying people could be at times, but she didn't want to see Freddie dig himself another hole and besides, she had something of her own up her sleeve. Despite Ares's wailing, Rose's eyes were solely focused on Freddie's face, just a few inches from her own.

Freddie's boney little fingers were digging into his shoulders to the point he would definitely be able to tell a collection of adults about his troubles and they'd no doubt believe them. He was doing a good job of telling him how much he'd hurt him and yet that was all it seemed to be, just words. That was until the blonde girl finally made a move to help him. "Yeah, yeah listen to your girlfriend," he grinned, hoping Freddie would get the hint and get off him. "You wouldn't want to embarrass yourself even more, bro." He gave Freddie an awkward grimace, "Cheers hon," he nodded his head to the girl. Despite looking as though a gust of wind would knock her over, she seemed to have bones of steel to walk straight up to the boy that could put her in the hospital for a week.

Gaia watched in quiet horror as Rose made her way over to the Ravenclaw boy, light in the line of fire. Then Ares opened his big mouth and Gaia scoffed again. Stomping over she got between the boys pushing the boy away from Ares. "Get off of him, don't listen. He is just trying to get a reaction out of you, Rosé please try get him away I'll handle Ares." She muttered still trying to push the boy off of the other one. This was ridiculous. What was it with Ares and his need to always stir up the pot. Did he have no sense of self-preservation? Was he truly that daft. Gaia inched herself as far between the boys as she could in the position they were.

Why didn't Rose go away? What was she doing? Freddie didn't want to look at her - it made his stomach hurt - but she was so close, he had to. His face burned. There wasn't a different way to fix this! Ares was going to tell on him! Why didn't anyone get that? He was going to keep doing this! He never stopped! Everywhere Freddie went, Ares tried to make him mad, tried to get him told off - he wouldn't go away!

Girlfriend? Freddie looked down, his heart thumping so hard it hurt. Rose wasn't his girlfriend. He did want to listen to her, though. Shut up, shut up, shut up! He was embarrassing himself. He was embarrassing himself because he didn't hit Ares yet. So why didn't he just do it?

Suddenly Gaia was pushing him. "Get off me!" he cried, crawling off Ares. He scrambled to his feet. His eyes were watering. He grabbed his potions book and threw it as hard as he could - not at Ares, just on the floor. He should've hit him. He looked even more dumb now. He looked even more dumb and Ares was going to tell on him. Was he gonna cry? He had to go right now. Freddie started walking. There was probably gonna be a professor. He was probably gonna get in trouble. But he had to go.

Rose's cheeks burned as Ares called her Freddie's girlfriend. She wasn't, everyone knew that, so why did it bother her so much that Ares was trying to use the term so casually? She didn't adjust her focus however, not even when Gaia tried to get in between the boys. Not even when Freddie's eyes started watering or he threw the book to the ground. He would protect her and she believed that, which meant she had to protect him, too. If nothing else, at least Freddie was now out of range of Ares, and if Gaia could keep hold of the Gryffindor then perhaps between them they'd calm the boys down. Rose only broke her attention to drop to the floor and scoop up Freddie's potions textbook, adding it to the rest of the notes she had tucked under her arm. She'd come back for her own textbooks on the table later. At the moment Freddie didn't need to think of her as cool, she just needed him to know that she was there even when things didn't go to plan. That's what friends were for, weren't they?

As Freddie started walking away, Rose gave Gaia a brief glance before running to catch up with him, moving a step ahead so that perhaps he wouldn't feel as though she was still staring at him if he was sad. She didn't like that someone such as Ares had so much power over her friend, which meant that she needed to put a stop to it. She'd thought taking matters into her own hands would have only been necessary for Rouge or Blanc's benefit, but perhaps it was time to readjust her attention.

On the way out of the library, Rose plucked out one of the sheets of parchment, scanning it as they walked. It was Herbology homework, but that most certainly wasn't the Gryffindor's handwriting. "Ares doesn't take his own notes in class," she told Freddie over her shoulder. "It would be a shame if he had the wrong answers in time for the exams."

Ares couldn't help but chuckle, the way everyone seemed to suddenly start piling on at the sake of saving him. He was fully prepared to get another fist to the stomach, and was clenching his stomach muscles quite hard in the hopes of hurting Freddie's fingers in the process, but he relaxed as the Ravenclaw finally clambered of him. Apparently he would listen to girls.

For Freddie to be annoyed at Gaia looming over him was ironic, given the position he'd found himself in over the last few minutes. Things only became funnier still as Freddie starting chucking a book around, as though he could take out his frustrations on that, instead. Ares propped himself up on his elbow as he started laughing at Freddie, his face was a picture he'd remember for a while. "Careful where you put your feet next time yeah? Wouldn't want you to trip anyone else over and send them to the hospital wing!"

Gaia was relieved for a second when Freddie got off of Ares, not because she didn't want the boy to punch Ares, in fact she might have preferred it that way but for his and Rose's sake she needed them gone. Watching Freddie's little tantrum made her apprehensive to let Rose go alone with him, but it'd be okay. He didn't seem like he was angry at the blonde and she seemed to know him well enough. Never the less Gaia made a mental note to make sure to check up on the Ravenclaw later. Turning to the gryffindor on the ground the Slytherin glared and pointed at him. "You, shut up for once in your life shut up. Stop throwing fuel to the flames." She spoke firmly to the boy before helping him up and then grabbing him by the ear and dragging him away. "I swear to god I have never seen anyone as foolish as you, do you even know what's good for you? If you did you'd know when the appropriate time is to shut up but noooo mister big boy has to always have the last word. Has to always throw the last bits of fuel into the fire." At this point Gaia was going off on a whole rant in Greek. After she got him a bit further away from everything into a nice quite corner she let his ear go. "Malaka, were you always this insufferable?" Without realizing she still spoke in her native tongue while presenting the boy with a rhetorical question.

*Malaka in Greek typically means wanker or jerk or idiot.
