Fifty years. It sounded so short in the grand span of things, especially when compared with schools in other parts of the world, but Kahurangi was proud to be here to celebrate such an important milestone for the school, especially with how it timed out with her own upcoming anniversary. Next year would be her twenty fifth at Hogwarts - half of the school's life, and not too far off half of her own. Hogwarts was home, both for Kahurangi and now Hinemoa as well - seeing her daughter running around in uniform after watching her grow from baby to child toddling around these halls was... there weren't really words for it.

So the anniversary had her in good spirits all around, and she had been quick to offer to help Angel out with his event. Much as she wanted to get out onto the water herself, Kahurangi knew that kids splashing around in boats all day would need plenty of kai to keep them going and she had spent all morning putting down a hāngī to keep students fed in between activities. She had been tending the pit as Angel and James set up, and finally it was time to reap the rewards of the work. It could be done with a flick of her wand but there was something satisfying about doing tasks like these manually, humming to herself as she picked up a shovel and made quick work of the dirt covering - she was probably a complete mess, but she couldn't quite bring herself to care. It was a holiday, students could deal with a teacher getting a little mucky. She pulled away the cloths and inhaled the welcome, familiar smell of ash and roasted meat with a contented sigh. The smell was enough to draw anyone with a rumbling stomach closer, and Kahurangi looked over her shoulder as she reached into the pit to pull the first basket out. "Alright, I need someone to help me carry these over to the table!"

Aroha knew the smell of hāngī like the back of her hand. That smoky delicous scent enticed her like nothing else. "Cheers, I'll help!" Aroha said. Honestly, it brought back memories of marae hāngī or family celebrations back at home. She took a basket from Professor Kahurangi, not using her wand by default. Growing up, not everyone used magic, so she was used to helping out the muggle way. "Thanks for this, it smells tino reka*!" She was tempted to keep some of it for herself but delayed gratification - she'd help where she could before eating her share. She took the first basket over to the set up tables.

Selene hadnt even thought that it was the schools fiftieth year when she had applied for the teaching position but she felt privileged to be back at the schho for this major event. when the planns for the even had gone out she had decided to join in on the food duty. and had spent most of the previous evening in the kitchen at home baking a selection of cupcakes and cookies with her mum. it almost felt like she was a child again helping her mum make food for her classes. except this time seh was the teacher makign food for the school. She had them set up on the table when she heard Kahurangi askign for help. She walked over and saw her pulling baskets out of the ground. She had Listened as Kahurangi had explained but it was a different hting all together watching her dig the food out of the ground. She went over to her. and saw her pulling the baskets out of the pit. impressed both with how well she had managed to make the oven, and how amazing it smelled, and also how she was able to handle the hot baskets. She picked up one of the towels lying ready to be used by those who got a bit wet and went over to her. "I can take one Kahurangi" she said. as she approached. watching one of the students take a full basket over to the table. "they smell amazing, i cant wait to try" she said. "What do we need to do with them now?" she asked as she reached the tables and started moving her cakes back along to clear more space for the proper food.

Lilith thought the day's activities were fun and she liked watching the students do their own thing. However she wasn't going to get into any of the boats or anything, she was well enough out of the water. Walking around she spotted her Head of House preparing something and asking if people wanted to help, noticing the Gryffindor seeker already helping and one of the newer professors too she made her way there. "It smells amazing here." Lilith said as she got closer. "I'll help out too, just tell me what to do or where to go." She said, eager to help however she could. Though it hadn't been quite like this, her family used to grill on a campfire by the lake at her grandmothers and Lili would help set the picnic table. In a way this reminded her of that.
