Lianne Thompson absolutely loathe some of the old, filthy rich men. They were arrogant and good-for-nothing humans that knew nothing but flash their checkbooks and have a battle of testosterone with other old, rich men like them. Some of the rich old men she knew were kind and shared stories of both wisdom and stupidity. However, in social gatherings meant for raising large sums of money, it was unavoidable to encounter the former. In fact, the woman had been steadily growing a certain dislike towards social gatherings such as this, but even she could acknowledge the fact that it was important. Not to them, nor to her in particular, but those who would benefit from it. It had been a gathering that had been planned months ago to raise funds for the cardiology unit of the hospital she had just transferred to and normally she wouldn't need to go to such events. But seeing as her parents and her brothers were in attendance, her mother had so diligently decided that she had to attend this as well. She had been seated at a table where some of her fellow nurses from the ER department where conversing with possible investors and she could already tell that this was going to be one hell of a night.
Lianne knew not how many people she had to be patient with that night but it was certain that the event was going very well. As usual, she had not initiated a conversation with any of her workmates and tried to engage with the invited guests at a minimum. However, there was one man that had made it obvious that he wanted her attention for the night so she had excused herself from the table, hoping to get a breather. Or at the very least a glass of water. The blonde had managed to get herself to the beverage table and a drink only to notice that the man old enough to be her father had followed her. He had been trying to convince her to dinner but she had been graciously declining it and yet it was obvious that the man's patience was growing thin, and honestly so was hers. If only her mother was not an acquaintance of this man, she would have already spoken out of turn. "Mr. Carson, thank you for your presence here. I am grateful and so is the Cardiology department that you are willing to help us but my answer stays firm. I must decline dinner, I have my hands full at the Emergency Room as it is," she said as she tried to inch away from the man as he still made a move to come close. Honestly, she just wanted this night to end.
Lewis did not particularly like parties. Especially not the ones where he had to do anything he could to get people to give money to the hospital. The hospital was currently trying to raise the funds to build the new cardiology unit for the hospital. Lewis didn't think they should be doing it this way, but he supposed it was really the only way they were going to get it done. Personally he would have preferred a new and improved therapy wing, but he'd been outvoted by about ten or eleven other people and so he really wasn't going to get what he wanted at all. He supposed that it made sense for a new cardiology unit, but he hadn't though that there was anything in particular wrong with the old one. He'd had a good enough time of it when he'd done his rotation there last year. Shaking his head as he moved from the bar and out into the open spaces of the room, the fundraiser was held in a function room of the hotel nearby, Lewis immediately noticed that one of the new nurses seemed to be in a bit of trouble. She seemed to have been corralled by one of the sponsors of tonight's festivities and she didn't seem to be handling his advances well. Lewis shook his head. This man was at all of their fundraisers and was always chatting up the ladies. It annoyed Lewis a little who was always in the practice of trying to help people and he didn't want to have to get involved. He was trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. Evidently that was not going to happen.
Lewis headed over to where they had been tucked away from the rest of the room. The woman was wearing a rather nice dress, she'd clearly put in a lot more effort than he had, with his boring old suit he'd had hanging in his closet since his college days. He placed his drink on a nearby table as he walked and smiled companionably at the man who's name had completely slipped Lewis' mind. "Hello, Sir. Might I interest you in a list of the benefits you will receive when investing in out newest cardiology unit?" The man didn't seem like he wanted to leave, but didn't want to be rude to whom he figured was an up and coming Doctor. He didn't need to know that Lewis was still an intern, that was information not deemed important in this moment. Once he'd managed to drag the man a way for a decent length of time, Lewis handed the man off to one of the more capable doctors and returned to where that nurse was. "Are you okay? Seemed like you needed some help. I hope you don't mind that I sort of just butted in like that. You weren't having a really great time and I just ruined it were you?" He asked, grinning slightly. He couldn't quite remember this woman's name, but she worked in the ER department where he was currently doing his last rotation. She seemed nice so far. He'd heard whispers about the new girl having some pretty important parents. He wondered if this was she. "I'm Lewis by the way. Lewis Davids." He held his hand out for her to shake.
Lianne didn't really like being a damsel in distress. She wasn't very physically capable though she liked to think hat she can handle herself in situations. However, there really were rare times that she couldn't and she couldn't very much blatantly ask for help from any one. And the certain situation she particularly found herself in at the moment was one of those instances that she couldn't weed out of without any help. But then again, who would help her in a situation such as this? Her family was preoccupied with the attention of other guests, she was popular within the Emergency Room but not really in a good way. She wasn't really an idiot nor was she deaf nor blind. She could see the looks her fellow nurses would give her, and she could hear the whispers going on around. She knew she wasn't really well-liked within her own department s it had been going around that her family were known doctors within the hospital and her skill and knowledge was enough for her to be able to pursue doctoring, though she chose not to. None of her coworkers would be helping her anytime soon. And well, the other guests would just turn a blind eye. She was in a pinch that she pretty much couldn't escape alone.
As Lia continued to poorly evade the old man's advances, she couldn't be anymore relieved when a man approached them and took away the older's attention away from her, albeit briefly. She really didn't recognize him but then again, she didn't really tend to socialize with her co-workers so she really barely recognized anyone within the gathering unless it was an associate of her family. The nurse watched as the man steadily and calmly dealt with Mr. Carson until the latter had finally decided to target another poor soul within the party. Lianne knew she wasn't out of the woods yet though, no doubt that man would be back if not in this gathering, then surely in the ones to come. Now that that problem was solved though, a new problem had risen for the blonde woman. She did not know how to talk to this somewhat stranger. She wasn't very sociable after all. "Uh, yeah. Thanks for dealing with him," she said quite awkwardly as she her eyes attempted to evade his gaze as her right hand rubbed her left arm unconsciously. She didn't exactly know how to deal with people who were not patients of hers. "Lianne. Lianne Thompson," she said with a small smile and shook his hand politely. She could only hope though that he does not recognize her family name. God knows that she didn't need any more rumors floating about, her family was known enough as it is and she didn't want to be in their shadow all her life.
Lewis hadn't really expected to be doing anything at the fundraiser tonight. Eating, drinking and chatting with the shareholders was to be expected of course, but pulling a young nurse away from a big spender was not really his idea of a good time. Thankfully for him, it had not been too much of an issue. He wasn't sure what he would have done if he'd had to almost break up a fight. A lot of Lewis' time was spent on trying to decide what field of medicine he wanted to go into and so he didn't spend much time with the nurses. He didn't much recognise this one either, but he had realised she was in trouble when she tried to way away the older man's advances and was rather unsuccessful. Mr Carson in particular, Lewis knew, had a bit of a reputation that he was sure she would not like to be aligned with. He smiled slightly at the woman as she thanked him. She was very pretty and he had to wonder what department she worked for. At the moment he was finishing off his last rotation of the cardiology unit, which was why he had been invited to this party. He hadn't been sure he would, being an intern, but apparently yes. Once he decided what he wanted to do, it would make more sense to send him to fundraisers, but they were understaffed, so perhaps that was the why of it. "Mr Carson can be a handful sometimes. But I'm sure you know that."
Lewis grabbed two glasses of champagne off of a waiter who walked past, he held one of them out for Lianne to take. "Thompson. That's a name I know, is it not?" He thought he'd heard it around the hospital. He shook his head. "It doesn't matter, I'm more interested in the Lianne part." he smiled at her. "Do you know what it means? Lianne?" Not many people knew about Lewis' secret love of etymology. He'd done a class on it as an elective in medical school and now he couldn't get enough of it. He was always tracing the etymology of the names of the people he met. It was a great ice breaker and it did wonders to make him seem interested in other people. He wasn't really all that good with crowds and so he often needed something to do that got him away from the rest. "It's latin, short for Julianne traditionally. It means youthful." Though he didn't say it aloud, he rather thought tat kind of thing suited her very well.
Lianne eyed the man curiously as she wondered who he was. He was obviously a doctor within the hospital, she knew that much. After all, he had referred to the cardiology unit as 'our' so it must mean that he was working within the same establishment as she was. And well, there wasn't really much in the list considering that their hospital was understaffed, he was most likely to be a doctor than a nurse like herself. And yet, she really couldn't put her finger down firmly. Not until he would tell her, but that was likely a conversation for another time. Lianne had released a snort that was way too unladylike, not that it was ever becoming of a lady, and would make her mother grimace. It was called for in her opinion. The words of the man were well too amusing. "I know it too well," she said with a shake of her head whilst amusement was dancing in her eyes. She smiled at him though, it would be rude to just express amusement instead of gratitude for what he had done. "Really though, thank you."
Lianne had to hold in her breath when Lewis had expressed the familiarity of her surname. She really didn't want to have a talk about her family in this fundraiser. She accepted the glass of champagne from the man and smiled gratefully when he had decided that knowing of her surname was unimportant. Cause it really was. She doesn't really like explaining to people how she's closely blood-related to four of the doctors in the hospital. She looked at him curiously though when he had asked her what her name meant. Now that she had thought about it, she hadn't really tried to find out, and now it was intriguing her. "No, not really," she shook her head and waited for the explanation that he was sure to give. As soon as he had told her, she had contemplated on it for a few moments as she took a sip of her drink. Youthful. "Hmm, I hope that fits," she mumbled nearly absent-mindedly before reigning back her thoughts to the man standing in front of her. "And what would Lewis mean?" the woman asked in curiosity. He had told her hers, she wondered if he would tell her his. It was nice and refreshing that he had this kind of knowledge after all.
