For a GIF does the video have to have an embed? or can you go to the original website where there's a full video? If that makes sense?

GIF files (Graphics Interchange Format) are not video files.
To create one, you need to use a graphics program which allows the creation of animated images using frames; such as ImageReady.

Well I've seen some people around the site with mini video's in their sigs and sometimes in their avatars. I want one for Calvin but i wasn't sure whether you had to provide a link to youtube with the video? There are some videos of Mitch Hewer (my playby) but there are some with the embed code and some without and i was wondering if you needed that?

You can actually request some be made here in the Graphics Request forum, though there are only about two graphics makers who can actually make them right now. All you need to provide them with are the links of the videos and specify what times you'd like for the gif to be.
Or, you can google "Mitch Hewer gifs" and see if you can find some already made gifs.
