Fourth Years, Lesson Two

"Good afternoon," Josef said firmly, scanning the rows of faces. "Today we’ll be practicing the Confundus Charm. Tell me — why is this spell important?" He pointed at a student in the front row, nodding curtly when they answered. "Correct. Casting a spell requires focus. If your opponent is confused, even for a few seconds, that’s time you can use to defend yourself or gain the upper hand."

"Some skilled witches and wizards can twist this charm beyond simple confusion. Used improperly, it can damage memory so badly the victim ends up in St. Mungo’s. Do not underestimate it."

He gestured for the class to stand and motioned them down onto the practice floor. As they moved, he flicked his wand, and several wooden training dummies shuddered and sprang to life, standing menacingly across the room. "Spread out. Each of you will face one of these dummies. The incantation is Confundo. Repeat it with me." He led them through the pronunciation until every voice in the room echoed the word clearly.

"Good. Now, here’s how this works. Cast the Confundus Charm correctly, and the dummy will respond with Lumos. Fail, or take too long, and it will grow hostile. At that point, it will attack with Stupefy. You will not get a second chance. One spell only." He gave the group a long, hard look before adding, "Better to fail in this room than out there. Don’t waste the opportunity."

With another flick of his wand, the dummies stepped forward, ready for combat. The classroom filled with the sound of incantations and flashes of light as the students began their work. Josef walked among them, watching every movement.

When the practice session ended, he flicked his wand, freezing the dummies in place and returning them to their motionless state. He waited until the last spell fizzled out before speaking again. "That will do. You’ve made progress today. Some of you more than others — but progress all the same. Your next task is to read up on the Amplifying Charm and the Quietening Charm. We’ll be covering them next." He strode back to the desk and gave a sharp wave of his hand, the classroom door swinging open "Dismissed."

Miles was actually a little eager for his next charms lesson. He enjoyed learning new spells, and this year it appeared they had quite a full schedule for new spells for him to learn. He was quite as he listened to the sub Professor, already itching to just get started and get some practice in with a new spell. He wasted no time in facing one of the dummies, concentrating as he gripped his wand tightly in his hand. The lesson passed pretty quickly as he practiced, but Miles felt confident that he had made some good progress. He still needed more practice, but he wasn't apposed to that. He finally left the classroom with a grin a looking forward to the next one.
