First Years Lesson Two

Mallory was pleased to see she remembered each students’ name as they came into class, smiling fondly at the lot of them. “Good morning, my dears,” She greeted when everyone was seated, standing from her desk. Her mahogany hair was wrapped in a braided bun, small pink flowers dotting her hair to match her powder pink robes. Peter slept peacefully in his rocker by her desk. As she stood Amara stirred from beneath her desk, stretching and jumping on top of the wood to groom herself. Mallory paid no mind to the Sphynx cat. Her robes swished softly around her feet as she began to pace in front of the desks.

Now, I do hope you did your reading. Can anyone tell me what spell we’ll be using today, and what it does?” She asked, smiling warmly and motioning for a student to answer. “Very good, dorogoy, five points for you,” She continued on again. “Lumos, my dears, is a very simple spell, and very useful. It is a spell that illuminates the tip of your wand and allows you to see in the dark, working much like a candle or a flashlight.

Mallory smiled, pausing in the front of the room. “Today, I would like you to find a partner, perhaps someone you don’t know. I would like the two of you to work together not just today, but for the remainder of this semester. Your grades are separate, of course, but I would like each of you to remember that your education is not something you must pursue alone. You have support, both from your Professors and from your friends.

Mallory smiled, folding her hands together. “Does anyone have any questions about todays spell?” She asked, taking a few moments to answer all of her students before resuming the lesson. “Alright, my darlings, let us go ahead and begin.” With a wave of her hand, she dimmed the lights. “I am right here if you have any other questions. When you have successfully cast Lumos, try to counter it with the spell Nox,” She instructed calmly.

Mallory wandered throughout the room, offering help to all who asked, moving back to the front as their time drew to a close. “I have seen remarkable work out of all of you today, my dears.” She turned the lights back on again. “Remember to do your reading, next week we will begin work on Wingardium Leviosa. Have a wonderful day, my darlings,” Mallory moved to sit back at her desk, smiling fondly at all of her students as they were dismissed.

Christa felt nervous as she walked into Charms class again. The last class had left her feeling a little unsteady on things and now this class was going to start with actually doing spells. God, she was going to mess up big time, she could already tell. She just knew she would. As she fell across the woman's demeanour though, ah, that made her feel more at ease. She had a way of making Christa feel more comfortable, even with a baby in the room. She was fascinated by the elegance of the professor’s robes and the way the tiny pink flowers complemented her braided bun - such a lovely detail! Partnering up for the semester made Christa anxious, but she appreciated the professor’s reminder that education was a shared journey. Finding someone she didn’t know was a little intimidating, but she managed to find a Hufflepuff who looked equally as confused as her and decided he would be her partner. @Angelo Dela Cruz It was the boy who'd asked the question about his wand. It took her a couple of tries to maintain the light steadily, but once she got it, a quiet sense of pride bloomed in her chest. By the end of class she felt she had it pretty well to hand, even if she really didn't understand how any of this actually worked.

Finley burst into the classroom with his hair sticking up at odd angles and his tine half done, his face flushed with embarrassment. "Sorry Professor! I lost track of time!" Again. he almost tripped over his untied shoelaces as he hurried to find an empty seat. Despite his late arrival, his excitement was palpable as he fumbled to pull out his wand, grinning sheepishly at his classmates. When Professor Grayveson explained Lumos, he immediately leaned over to his new partner, Daisuke, whispering, “This is going to be awesome!@Daisuke Kaster Though his first attempts at casting the spell were chaotic—nearly poking himself in the eye at one point—he refused to give up. When he finally managed to create a faint glow, he cheered so loudly it startled a few nearby students. “Got it! Did you see that?” Finley said, grinning as if he’d just won a Quidditch match. By the time class ended, he was already buzzing about next week’s lesson, scrambling to grab his bag and promising himself (again) to try to be on time next time.

Finally, he was actually getting to learn some magic. Miles was more than ready, eagerly grabbing his seat in the Charms classroom and yanking his wand out of his pocket. His legs swung under the desk as he listened, drumming his fingers against the wood and unable to sit still. Miles just wanted to feel like a proper wizard and actually do so proper magic. Finding someone he didn't know was a little challenging (and he didn't see why this certain spell was one he needed to practice with someone else in the first place), but he soon found a partner. The Gryffindor eagerly jumped right into practicing, narrowing his eyes and clearing his throat as he attempted the spell over and over again. The first few times all he managed was a slight flicker or an incredibly dim light you could barely even see. But then, the tip of his wand suddenly lit up into a bright glow, and the boy grinned wider. "I did it! Look!" Maybe he was far too proud of himself, but he couldn't help it, bouncing slightly in his seat as he admired the glow from the end of his wand. By the end of the lesson, Miles was still grinning as he stuffed his things and wand away again, leaving the classroom and excited about the next lesson.

It was a relief that he wasn't in trouble after what he'd said in the last Charms class. He really hadn't known that cutting just the tip of his wand would be a bad idea. The thing didn't exactly come with an instruction manual. He gave a wave to the baby as he entered the classroom before taking his seat. When Miss Mallory announced they'd be partnering up for the rest of the semester, Angelo felt a little nervous. He knew that what he said before would have labeled him as stupid to a lot of the people in the class. He wasn't - it was just all... new. And he'd barely been in New Zealand for a month so it was all a big adjustment. Thankfully, one of the Gryffindor girls approached him and he smiled at her unsurely. "Partners?" he asked with an unsure smile. "You can call me Buboy if you're g?" he said trying to be charming though he's not sure how it was coming out since English still felt a little foreign. When the girl agreed, the two of them quickly settled and Angelo listened intently amazed. He'd never need a flashlight again. He practiced the spell with his partner, with him trying to cast "Lumos" several times before his wand tip started to glow with a steady light. "Ooooooo look look!" he showed his partner when his wand finally lit up. He, of course, cheered appropriately when hers did too "Yoooooown!" he cheered. "Tenks for today," he told Krista on their way out of the classroom.

Henri didn’t enjoy how much time his classes took. He was pretty determined to really not go along to them if he didn’t want to. If the weather was nicer he wouldn’t go. If things were just better elsewhere, he just wouldn’t go along. He knew his sister wouldn’t be happy if she heard him doing that, but Henri didn’t mind. She could have all the issues with it until she was blue in the face he wasn’t going to change. He headed out of the dorm room, knowing he’d decide at the last moment whether he’d actually bother with the class.

Henri walked into the charms classroom, he was a little eager for this, but mostly because he wanted to do spells, and this was a class with spells. He looked up at the professor and then paired up with someone in the class. He nodded along with what they would do, Lumos and nox. He took his wand and then with a little concentration said, ”Lumos,” and the spell lit up the wand, he then did nox too and then just did the spell over and over. Pleased that he’d got it right.
