“Morning, all. Hopefully you feel like you have a good understanding of this school and its short, but important history. But let’s talk a little about the other schools, some of which you’ll come across in your studies. If you’re interested, the schools also run exchange programs, and you may eventually have transfer student classmates.”
Trina waved her wand, and neat handwriting appeared on the board as a list of the other schools appeared for the students to copy down, as she talked through each of them:
"Each school is different. You would still learn to cast the same spells in first year, but take Beauxbatons for example - you might find you spend more time in Charms there than you would here. And Ilvermorny has houses, but they are a little different to ours. I bring up these two schools because we have a traditional end of season Quidditch match against one or the other - depending on who wins a match between the two of them. So you will at the very least see their Quidditch uniforms, and be able to compare them to the ones here. You will also learn a little more about Durmstrang and the original Hogwarts in fifth year, when you learn about the Tri-Wizard tournament, so that's something to look forward to."
"Of course," she said, after a pause once she had given everyone time to take notes and ask a few questions, "these are just the ones we know about. There are very likely schools in, say, China or India, just because they are highly populated countries, but we don't really have that information to hand. There are plenty of small homeschooling and private education groups, and there's specialist institutions like the Frost Flying Academy. I'm not testing you on those, relax."
“So,” Trina waved her wand and pulled up a large world map on the board. “Let's do a little exercise before class ends. We are here,” she explained, pointing at New Zealand and putting a pin on the map with the Hogwarts school symbol. “Now, the actual locations of the schools are Unplottable, meaning they can't appear on maps. It's a magic charm that protects places like magic schools from being found in order to keep us safe. But I have given you the countries, or at least the general regions. So, I want some brave volunteers to come up and try and pin each of the other schools on this map. Let's see if anyone is either really clever with geography, or really good at guessing.”
She watched in amusement as the students took turns in trying to pin some of the schools. Naturally, it was a hard ask, and she didn't berate anyone who made a mistake, rather just eventually pointing them in the right direction. She didn't expect them to know where all the countries were, especially once they got to places like Brazil and Uganda. When the class was over, they at least had the schools pinned in the right places. "Homework, yes I know!” as the students groaned while packing up. "Homework is to look up the other schools and come back to me next lesson with a fun fact about any other school. Even if it's just telling me what colour uniform they wear. Have a nice afternoon!"
Homework
RP the lesson. Points for anyone who wants to try and pin a school on the world map - even if you're wrong! I'm rewarding participation more than accuracy for this class, as I do not expect your 11/12 year old characters to be geography experts, so feel free to make mistakes and have some fun with it!
Optional extra credit for the homework assignment, only needs to be 1-2 sentences at most. I know some sources vary as to which schools are canon - I suggest sticking to the ones acknowledged on site (i.e. as per the lesson). Please cite your sources!
