Geo was incredibly excited to be back at Hogwarts for another semester. As a Hufflepuff student here once herself she was more than familiar with the castle as well close to a number of the other professors, so being able to transfer to teach her favorite subject for the upcoming year had the woman keen to get involved. She'd dressed simply; hair tied back into a braid. It had always been her style to be able to move swiftly when working and being weighed down by too many accessories had never been her style. As the first years entered the room, Geo smiled at each one as to do her best to recognize the faces of her new students. Just because she was here on a temporary basis didn't mean she deemed her students as such, and she'd get to know them as well as she would her own students back in Ilvermorny.
"Welcome to your first Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson!" The blonde was stood at the front of the class, hands clasped together in front of her. "My name is Professor Adler," she told the group, not wanting to be regarded as a Cade, given that role was already taken, "and I'll be teaching you for this first year." Geo began to move a little around the space as she spoke. "Until last September I worked as an Auror, so I've many years' experience working with the Dark Arts, and coming up against the type of witches and wizards that will try to use the Dark Arts for their own gain within our community. If anyone ever has any questions about becoming an Auror, you're more than welcome to come and see me."
Professor Adler continued on, "While this subject is excellent for an Auror career, it's not the only reason as to why this subject is important to pay attention to," she looked between the students in front of her, hoping at least some of them would be taking notes. "This is a subject that is designed to protect you and those around you, and if you're able to become confident enough with the spells that it becomes second nature, you'll be in a good position to defend yourself should you ever need to." Of course, there was always the hope the students wouldn't need to protect themselves, however, should the occasion arise it was always better to be safe than sorry.
"Can anyone give me a brief description of what the Dark Arts entail?" Geo asked the class, before choosing one of the students that had raised their hand. She listened intently to their answer, nodding slowly as they spoke. "That's very good. Many spells within the Dark Arts are intended to do harm, which why is very important to be paying attention in this class, and watch where you're pointing your wand," she didn't want to be sending a first year to the hospital wing this early on in the semester. "Most of the work you'll do this year will be theoretical, which I realise may not be deemed exciting, but it's important to lay the foundations before we start casting spells." Geo was walking around the desks now, purely because she had too much excitable energy of her own to remain at the front of the room, although her outward demeanour didn't give her away. "We will however, be practising some wand work, and as you progress throughout the years you'll pick up curses, jinxes and hexes, plus the counter-curses to defend yourself."
Professor Adler moved to the front of the room now as it was easier to address the class as a whole, "I know this is your first lesson but I will be setting homework, to get the ball rolling. I would like everyone to submit a question you may have about this class, and I will do my best to answer them. You've got a little bit of time remaining, so have a think about how this subject may influence you. Once you've submitted your question, you can go!" Geo took a seat behind the desk, curious to see what the students would come up with.
In order to get an O in this class:
- Please roleplay the lesson.
For additional credit:
- The first person to answer Professor Adler's question will be rewarded.
- Write out a question for the homework, which I'll do my best to answer before the next class!
As a final note, please take a look at the DADA lower years class policy for more information about the rules and guidelines of this subject.
