First Years Lesson One (Hufflepuffs and Gryffindor)

Mallory was both relieved and nervous to be back. She'd spoken to Sam, and between the few days the boys spent with their father and the babysitting her fellow Professor offered, Mallory'd gotten several of her lessons covered. She had set up the classroom again the way she liked, giving it a quick cleaning that morning before arranging her desk. Amara was curled up with Maxim underneath her large oak desk, fast asleep as well (as if she'd gone and spelled all her little minions to rest, when really it had just been a long night) and all of Mallory’s notes and lesson plans were arranged neatly on the desk itself, turned to face out to the rows of seats so she could sit. She wasn't used to being away from her new baby Nikolay, he was just so little. She shook her head, trying not to worry.

She had decorated the desk with a line of flowers, most of them shorter, creating a small barrier along the edge of the desk that she could still see over. She had taken care getting dressed that morning, her light powder blue robes swishing gently around her feet and her dark mahogany hair pulled back in a braided chignon. Peter was thankfully a calmer baby, dramatic when he wanted to be, but fascinated with watching her to the point where she could get ready for the day.

She rose from her desk as the students filed in, smiling kindly as the last of them settled in their seats. She clapped her hands lightly to get their attention, looking over the fresh young faces of the first years. “Dobroye utro, good morning my dears,” She greeted gently, her Russian accent a more subtle but still there. “My name is Professor Mallory Grayveson, and I’ll be your Professor until fifth year,” She raised a hand, the chalk raising to write out her name in an elegant script behind her.

Speaking to the children was very simple, and Mallory found herself relaxing. “I was born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia. I have two siblings, and I moved to Arrowtown here in New Zealand when I was eighteen, where I met and eventually married my husband, and we had our sons Peter and Nikolay.” She told them, walking slowly back and forth across the front of the room as she spoke.

“My dear, would you please start us off by telling us your name, house, and something about yourself, and something about your wand?” She asked, stopping in front of a student and smiling kindly. She listened carefully to all of the given answers, smiling warmly at each student in turn. Her memory was excellent, and she took a mental note of every name and face in her class, and noting their wands. “Thank you,” She smiled warmly at her class.

She moved back to the front of the room, and clapped her hands lightly. “Very good! Your wand is a part of you, an extension of your power and yourself. It’s important that you know about it, that you understand it’s properties and the power it can wield.”

Mallory continued to move, her robes swishing gently along the floor. “A Charm is a spell that adds certain properties to an object or creature. Charms are distinguished from transfigurations in that a charm adds or changes properties of an object; it focuses on altering what the object does as opposed to what the object is.” She explained. “I would like each of you to read the assigned chapter over the week between lessons. I will of course do a brief overview of the relevant chapter at the beginning of each lesson, but it will be much easier for you to take the time to study and understand on your own rather than trying to cram it into a single lesson.” Of course, if they were anything like her brother, and she assumed many of them were, they would wait until the last minute to do their reading.

"We will be learning spells, beginning next week with Lumos; the charm to cast a light from your wand, all the way up to your seventh year where you will progress onto casting your very own Patronus." She continued, pulling out her wand and casting a Patronus as she finished speaking, letting the Sphynx cat wander idly through the air for a few moments before letting it dissipate. “Of course, the more advanced magic will be taught by Professor Haden, to all of you that wish to continue your classes with him.”

Mallory stopped in the middle of the room, smiling fondly at all the children. “That’s all the time we have for today. Remember to do your reading, I’ve made you all a list of what chapters we’ll be covering this semester. Stop by my desk on your way out to collect your copy. My office is open after breakfast until dinner, if you have any questions about what you’ve read or would like a bit of extra tutoring, feel free to stop by.” She brought her hands together. “Next week we’ll be going over the spell Lumos, and be sure not to forget your wands. Dasvidaniya,” She spoke fondly, and with a flick of her wrist the door opened again and she moved to sit at her desk, passing out the assigned reading and homework list with a smile as the children came to collect their papers before leaving.

The professor was smiling so much that Cassandra couldn't help but smile from the very moment she entered the classroom. She listened attentively, feeling that she would like the school and spend a cool seven years here. Feeling the professor's glance on her, she cleared her throat. Good morning, my name is Cassandra and Gryffindors at least some of them know me because I am just from Gryffindor. I have an 11 inch and 1/2 inch Rigid Dogwood Wand with Acromantula Web Core.I like chocolate cakes.I also have a cat named Princess. Cass hoped it went well. She always preferred to live a little in her world, which didn't mean she didn't love people. And she felt under her skin that the professor would understand her, which is why her smile did not leave her when she went to the desk to get the supplies and long after she left the classroom.

Juniper was nervous about their actual lessons that would include magic so as she walked to the Charms classroom she took a wary look around. It looked nice enough and as her eyes settled on the Professor she too looked nice, it'd be okay right? With hesitant steps the first year made her way further into the room, someone came rushing in and almost knocked her over. "I'm sorry," The Hufflepuff mumbled to the person that had almost ran her over. Before anymore accidents could happen she hurried to find a seat in the room, placing her book and wand on the table in front of her.

As the lesson began and their Professor asked the students each introduce themselves Juniper was on the brink of tears. Again? She'd have to talk with everyone's attention on her yet again. Once it was her turn she looked around at everyone else in the room then at the Professor, her eyes resembling those of a deer in headlights. "Well I am Juniper Veritas but please just call me Juni? I have a Curly 14 Inch Unyielding Chestnut Wand, I like butterflies." She spoke quickly, trying to keep her voice loud enough for the Professor to hear. For the rest of the lesson Juniper just sat there, listening and staring at what she thought might have been cats curled up under the desk. As the lesson concluded Juni approached the Professor with caution. "Are those cats, under your desk? May I pet them?" She asked the woman, hoping she'd say yes. @Professor Mallory Grayveson

Mallory smiled at the young girl that approached- Juni- and nodded, motioning for the girl to go over to them. "Maxim, and Amara. Amara is getting a bit older, but Maxim is energetic enough for them both. Just be gentle- they're sweethearts, and they love attention."

Chase LOVED the idea of Charms!! That may very be the best class that he could ever think of?? Like what could be better than learning how to charm things?! Chase ran into the classroom skidding a little bit as he entered the classroom and turning to the professor in embarrassment. "So sorry!" He said before running to the furthest possible seat away so that he could hide how embarrassed he was and hopefully not have to interact with anybody at the same time. Chase inwardly groaned as the professor asked them to introduce themselves, knowing everybody would now know who he was! "I'm Chase Edwards, I'm a Gryffindor, I'm a bit impulsive.. and I have a Curly 16 Inch Unyielding Silver lime Wand with Essence of Belladonna Core!" He said, hoping that nobody noticed he hadn't properly answered the last thing they were supposed to do. He quickly ran out of the classroom when they were dismissed, as quickly as he had entered in the first place.

@Professor Mallory Grayveson

Mallory was a little surprised by the student that came literally sliding into her classroom, blinking and giving him a smile. Class went fairly well without any interruptions from him, but as she dismissed them he was gone just as fast. She blinked, looking after him for a moment before chuckling. "Well, that should be interesting," She murmured to herself, curious for a moment how the semester was going to go.

Eloise was excited about charms! She loved the idea of learning the cool and useful charms and spells. The Hufflepuff got dressed and ready, looking through her collection of different themed earrings before deciding to go with the chocolate earrings. She then quickly packed the things she needed for the lesson before skipping happily to her charms classroom. When she arrived, she quickly took a seat near the front of the classroom, taking the stuff out that she needed for the lesson and then placing them on the desk in front of her.

Eloise moved her attention towards the professor as she started off with the lesson. She smiled as the professor told them a bit about herself, which Eloise thought it was nice. It was nice to know the professor you'd be seeing a lot for the next few years. They were then told to introduce themselves and their wands, which Eloise was excited about. They went around the room from one student to another, and it wasn't long until it was Eloise's turn. "Hi! My name is Eloise! Eloise Flynn! I'm in Hufflepuff, and I love bunnies! And my wand is a Knotted 13 1/2 Inch Sturdy Hazel Wand with Fairy Wing Core! I think it's quite cool! I love the colour and the fact that its core has a fairy wing, fairies are cool!" Eloise says with a giggle as she introduces herself and then shows her wand. She loved her wand very much. It wasn't long until the lesson had continued on and they were learning about the subject. Eloise made sure to make note of what the professor was saying as she didn't want to miss out on anything important. She also nodded her head along to what the professor was saying to show that she was understanding the content that was being given.

It wasn't long until the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Eloise quickly packed up stuff up as well as tided up her area. She then says a quick and appreciative and thanks to the professor, while also complimenting the cat the professor had that Juni had pointed out to, before heading out of the classroom with her friends and the rest of her classmates.

Lewis wasn’t the brightest member of his family and he was fairly aware of that, so when the lesson for Charms turned out to be introductory, he was pretty happy. He didn’t know a lot about his wand though, so he was going to have to figure something out, maybe whatever the wandmaker had said to him when he’d gotten his. “Uh, I’m Lewis Edogawa,” he said, standing and giving a polite bow - he didn’t think he would easily break the habit ingrained into him. “Quidditch is my favourite thing to do and talk about in the whole world and uhm, my wand s seventeen inches, maple, swishy, and kind of knotted-looking. It’s got a Chimera scale fragment core, which apparently makes it a bit… temperamental, but it works really well when I’ve got a clear goal.“ Not that he necessarily knew what having a clear goal meant. He sat back down and sighed, he didn’t really think he would be very good, but learning was okay.

Taylor headed into what was called a charms class though she didn’t really know what that was supposed to be about at all. She knew kind of maybe that it was about charms, that much was obvious, but she couldn’t have said what a charm was and she certainly hoped that was okay. She listened to what the Professor had to say and then started her own introduction. “Hi, I’m Taylor Davids, I’m a Gryffindor and I’m originally from Maine,” she said, thinking probably not many people in the class would know where that was. That was fine, she probably didn’t know most of the places they were from either. “I don’t really know what I like yet, acting is fun but I don’t know if it’ll ever be more than a hobby and uh… my wand is knotted rowan, fourteen and a half inches, swishy, with a thestral tail hair core. I think it suits me because rowan’s meant to be protective, and I always try to look out for people, even if it’s just making sure they’re not sitting alone. The thestral core… it’s rare, and I know it means I’ve seen something not everyone has, but I like to think it makes me more understanding.” She paused for a second, unsure what else to say, and then sat down, she didn’t think she needed to add anything - or she hoped not. When class was over she hurried out.
