First Years Lesson Four

Mallory was looking forward to this class. This was undoubtedly one of Mallory's favorite lessons. She'd spoken to Sam, and between the few days he spent with his father and the babysitting her fellow Professor offered, Mallory'd gotten several of her lessons covered. She hummed as she set about the room, her hair carefully brushed and her soft blue robes swishing gently around her. When everything was ready, she took her seat at her desk, and with a dainty flick of her wrist, the doors opened. She smiled warmly as the students filed in. "Hello, everyone. Take your seats," she called, waiting until they were all seated before standing. "Welcome," she greeted warmly, bringing her hands together.

She motioned then to the mountains of pillows around her desk. "I trust you've noticed the newest addition to our class. No, we aren't building forts. We're learning a new spell!" She offered cheerily. "Accio. I trust you've all done your reading, so can anyone tell me what this spell is?" She looked around, pointing to a raised hand. "Very good!" She beamed. "Five points."

Mallory smiled, brushing her hair behind her ear. "Now, I'd like us to practice this. Be specific, now, or you may summon more pillows than you'd like. As always, the wording of your spells is crucial. Your wands are very powerful, and if you do not focus, if you do not concentrate your power, you can easily overwhelm yourself. I'm right here if you need anything, do not hesitate to ask if you would like my assistance."

She smiled, stepping back. "Everyone, I'd like you to practice summoning a cushion. At the end of the lesson, everyone, please take your cushion with you. A small reward for a spell well done. Off you are then." She returned to her desk, smiling, watchful to see if any students needed her attention.

Henri had not been interested in going to class, but when Apolline had found him, he knew he didn’t have a choice. She had dragged him back to his common room and then forced him in to put on his uniform. He knew she’d send someone after him if he took too long in getting ready, so he had been quick about it, throwing on the first uniform that he could grab and then heading back out to her. She had dragged him to class and waited till he was inside before leaving. He rolled his eyes at her, the moment she was gone.

Henri walked into the charms classroom, it was the one class he tended to not miss. He sat down in the room and took his wand out. He glanced at the professor and was more interested in the spell they’d be doing than anything about the room. It was only as the profesor got started and they were allowed to practice that he really noticed it. He took his wand and then when allowed to, pointed it at the cushions. ”Accio green cushion,” it took a couple of attempts but he got it and was pleased with himself when he did. He practiced summoning more and more of them until the professor wrapped up the lesson and let them leave.

Miles showed up a little late for the next charms lesson, having to rush into the classroom to actually get to his seat on time. He was still a little out of breath as he sat down, though instantly brightened up hearing they would actually be doing magic. Magic was always better than having to sit around and listen to some boring lecture. And it was even an interesting spell, accio would no doubt come in handy around the place when he needed to reach for something. So, for a change, he was actually intent as he listened to the explanation, pulling out his wand in preparation.

It sounded easy enough as he aimed, clearing his throat as he focused on the cushion in front of him. "Accio blue cushion." It took a few attempts, but finally he grinned as he cushions came flying into his waiting hands. Well, that was easier than he was expecting. But, he decided to practice for the rest of the lesson before they were dismissed, tucking his new cushion under his arm as he finally left the classroom.

Christa didn't know how much she would have to see before she got used to magic, but she felt like she was never going to get used to it. Just when she thought something was starting to make sense, something else would happen and she would feel like she was at square one all over again and she really didn't see how that was fair at all. By this point she had been hoping that it would be more helpful to her, but even writing her little scrapbook for Sabrina wasn't helping anything at all and that kind of massively sucked. As she walked into the charms classroom, she looked around at all the pillows, now a little concerned they were going to have a pillow fight. Well, that might have been nice for a change instead of levitating them or something, which was one of the things she was still kind of struggling with actually. She hoped she could get this one down quickly because it sounded like a really useful spell, she couldn't think of how many times she had been really comfy in bed only to realise that something she really wanted was out of reach and now she would have to disturb her comfort to be able to reach it. She practiced the movements with her wand, following along with Professor Grayveson and then spoke aloud to try and get the intonation right. Apparently that was important so she wondered how things worked with accents, because surely not everyone with different accents could say the spell the same way, right? Maybe she was over thinking things, maybe magic was way more intuitive to people who knew what they were doing than to her. She pointed to the pink pillow, "Accio pink pillow!" though it took her several tries to get it right, she did feel rather satisfied when she realised she'd successfully done it.

Finley had began to wonder if late should just be his middle name from now on. Seeing as he didn’t think he’d been early to a single class this semester, but he was trying not to let that get him down. He quietly tried to slide into the classroom as the professor set about explaining the task for the day, picking a random seat beside someone so he wasn’t bothering the whole class towards the back. He tried not to be too obvious, though he was sure Professor Grayveson had noticed him sicne she said she would be keeping a special eye on him, since his stupid dad said she should. He was so overprotective it was honestly ridiculous. When he noticed the pillows though, which probably took a little longer than it should have, he grinned, because he knew this would be a fun lesson. Who wouldn’t like summoning pillows, right?

He tried to look for one he particularly liked and settled for a sparkly blue one off to the side. “Accio pillow!” He wasn’t sure if he needed to be specific, but soon enough he’d managed to get the pillow he wanted into his hands. There had been a couple of mishaps of course like when he’d been smacked in the face by one, but he’d mostly managed to work it out. So, when he left the classroom he was feeling a bit more confident and satisfied in the work he’d put in.

Angelo entered Charms classroom, eyes widening at the sight of the towering piles of pillows near Miss Grayveson's desk. It was quite... weird. Even in his old school, he couldn't quite remembering seeing so many comfy things in a classroom, though he supposed this wasn't exactly a normal school by normal standards? That sounded weird even in his head. Shaking his head as if that would rid him of the thoughts, he started listening to the professor's instructions. When Miss Grayveson started introducing the spell, Angelo's heart raced. He knew he could do spells, had been doing quite a number since the semester started really, so this should be no different. He was going to do his best anyway. When it was time to practice, Angelo sat up straight and pointed his wand at a cushion near the middle of the pile. He took a deep breath and attempted the spell, "Accio cushion!" he yelled. For a moment, nothing happened. He blushed in embarrassment and looked around to check if anyone was judging him. There was probably a snicker or two but no one at least said anything. "Keri to, keri to, keri to," he muttered to himself as a mantra before trying again. This time, it seemed like the cushion got the idea and shot through the air but stopped short a few inches from Angelo's feet. That was certainly an improvement. He tried again, and again, and again with varied levels of success. It wasn't perfect, but it was progress and he was fine with that. This was all so new anyway.

Daisuke entered the classroom, instantly noticing the amount of pillows stacked near the professor's desk. While the professor's cheerfulness may be infectious to some, Daisuke was honestly a bit overwhelmed though he slightly appreciated her enthusiasm. The Accio spell was at least something he'd read about, not to mention useful for daily things. He raised his hand shyly to answer the question, "It's a summoning spell," and then went back to listening to the lecture. Of course, like any spell, it required a certain amount of focus and concentration as the demonstration showed. It made him a little nervous really. When it was time to practice, he closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. He pointed his wand toward a particularly fluffy-looking pillow and spoke clearly, "Accio pillow." The pillow wobbled but otherwise refused to move. He adjusted himself a little, mostly his grip on his want before saying, "Accio pillow!" more forcefully. The pillow lifted into the air and zoomed toward him, smacking into his chest. Startled, he stumbled back but caught it in his arms, earning a few chuckles from nearby students. At least it had worked. He left the classroom with a small smile, clutching the pillow like a trophy.
