First Years, Lesson Five

Landon had a rough night the night before. The Mandrake party went on all night, and he had to break it up, and clean the mess. He didn't mind them having too much fun, but he hadn't expected the party to go on for so long. After all, the man had only been studying mandrakes for a couple of years and he was only just getting used to the way they behaved. It was quite an interesting subject though and the man just chuckled at the thought of mandrakes having more fun than he could ever have. After all, they'll have a much shorter life than he will and he was slightly glad they were making the most of it.

Landon leaned back against his desk as his class began to walk in. "Hello all! I am sure that everyone enjoyed your pumpkins from last lesson." Landon smiled around at them all, knowing that he had enjoyed them himself last night with some potato mash. "We are going into the Forbidden Forest and gathering our next project. We will be supplying mistletoe." Mistletoe had many magical properties that Landon did not know about until reading up on it. Despite this, it was the closest thing to muggle plants that he would be teaching about and was excited for it nonetheless. "It is for the Yule Ball, so we will have plenty of it.

"Whether or not you all are accustomed to this weather, we should get going."
Landon put his gloves on. "Grab your gloves, pruning shears, and a bag." Landon handed each student a small burlap tote bag and walked outside, hoping the others would follow. He wondered whether or not they would see a creature, however, they weren't going far into the forest anyway and it wasn't like they were in any danger.

He stopped at the path. "You'll notice along this path the many bushes and trees. Mistletoe is parasitic, believe it or not. Birds carry their seeds and they grow on bushes and trees. Perceive the clump of mistletoe around us. What you will do is put on your gloves, and get out your pruning shears and clip off the sprigs so they'll fit your bags." Landon demonstrated, and soon after they started, they had full bags.

The man led them back out of the forest and to the greenhouse. He set his bag down on the trestle table. "Now, we shall take the strips we've acquired and snip off the mistletoe with their leaves. See how the berries grow in groups together, with the leaves surrounding them. Cut them like this." He verified, where the berries and leaves were all still connected. "And there you have it," He waved his hand and the sprig hovered a bit in the air, "a sprig of mistletoe. Get started, and you should have them all done by the end of class. I expect you to throw your scraps into that barrel for the compost heap. Then place your mistletoe in that large trough over there, where I'll cure it and add something else to it. They'll soak there until the ball, when they'll be ready to be hung up. You may leave."

Assignment: RP lesson, it doesn't matter what you do. You may godmod me (to a certain extent and to where I would still sound like myself). Include a picture of mistletoe for extra credit.

Marina was still getting used to the fact that the weather in this country was very different to her home. It had only been a couple of years and she really wasn’t sure if she was ever truly going to get used to it given everything else. It was hard to get used to something being warm when it had always been on the colder side, not that she would have specifically called the winter weather in Puerto Rico cold, not like it could be in some places anyway. She shrugged her sack onto her shoulder and pulled her gloves onto her hands tightly so she wouldn’t forget them. She wasn’t exactly thrilled to be heading the the Forbidden Forest because apparently it was one of those places that was only forbidden when the professors said so and she really disliked inconsistency. It seemed everyone else in the school didn’t care about things being inconsistent because they just kept being inconsistent. She sighed, gathering the mistletoe as she went along and shoving it in her sack. There just wasn’t much point to doing anything else as the class ended so she headed back to the greenhouse when the class ended.

Herbology had been all fun and games so far, one lesson that Juniper did absolutely not feel overwhelmed in, though it seemed like the universe really wanted to change that. As she settled in the greenhouse the Professor announced they'd go into the forest. Her eyes widened and body stilled completely. Wasn't it... Forbidden for a reason? What business did they have entering it even in broad daylight with a Professor, she herself would have much rather skipped said trip completely. Grabbing everything they were told Juni followed the Professor, feeling jumpier than ever, but not daring to stay behind in case it'd mean she'd get points taken away from her or something. She had to do it to be a good student and she would, but Merlin did every small sound make her flinch a little and her eyes constantly scanned the surroundings wide from worry.

Freddie put his shears in his bag and slung it over his shoulder, following his classmates out of the greenhouse. He hadn't told anybody about his adventure into the forest a few weeks ago. Mostly because nobody would believe him, but also because someone might believe him and tell a professor, and he didn't want to be in any more trouble. Anyway, he wasn't scared. The twisting trees still gave him the creeps, but if nothing bad happened when he came with Kaysi, it wasn't going to happen with Professor Carter here.

He snipped a piece of mistletoe into his bag and circled the tree to look for more. Nope. There was Juni, though. Was she okay? She looked like she was going to cry. Freddie stepped over a huge root and walked down a bit to talk to her. "Are you okay?" he asked. "Did you find some yet? Do you wanna look with me?"

Juniper jumped and nearly screamed as someone spoke to her, her eyes widening even further. It was only Freddie though, no scary troll there to eat her or drag her into the forest for a big spider to feast on. She relaxed but only a little shaking her head. She'd been too scared and alert for any dangers to even be able to try look for the mistletoes. "I- it's so creepy. Why are we here... They said it was forbidden and it feels wrong and what if something happens? I don't even know how to defend myself..." She said quietly, they could have taught her a bit of defense before throwing her into this forest, all she knew was how to levitate and grow a pumpkin OH and light up her wand...

"Sorry," said Freddie, when he realised he'd made her jump. He didn't mean to make it worse. And she was right. It was so creepy out here. He didn't even know why. There was nothing super weird about it - nothing you could point to - but he still had goosebumps. "Nothing bad's gonna happen," he said. "And Professor Carter's here. Let's just get, like, five pieces - there's a bunch down there - and then you can have some of mine, and we'll both have enough. Okay?"
@Juniper Veritas

Juniper gave a small smile to Freddie's apology, he was too nice. She nodded and shook her head all at once, giving her neck a miniature cramp. "No it's fine we can look for enough for the both of us. You are right nothing will happen and mama did say there's safety in numbers so if we just stick together?" She offered, not wanting to take Freddie's pieces from him. Offering to look for some with her was nice enough already. "They really shouldn't call this forbidden if they are taking us right in anyways... Kind of defeats the point, no?" She whispered to the Ravenclaw, casting a wary look at her Head of House.

@Freddie Lagowski

Freddie shrugged. He didn't really care if he didn't have enough. Some girls, like Juni, they cared about that stuff - they wanted to do everything right all the time - but he wasn't like that. She could have half of his mistletoe if she wanted it. "Yeah - you'll be safe with me," he said, like he knew any more magic than she did. It sounded good though. Kind of made him feel better, too. "Yeah, it's weird. And I don't know why it's forbidden. There's nothing here."

They found a few more clumps of mistletoe before heading back to the greenhouse. Freddie watched Professor Carter cut his sprigs, then got to work clipping his own. "This is why you should've taken mine," he said. "Now I have more work." He didn't actually mind the work - it was just funny. Once he'd finished, he swept all their scraps into his bag and tipped them into the compost barrel.

Godmod approved

Juniper was glad Freddie had found her because she might have ran out of that forest in the next five minutes had he not. they'd worked together and found enough mistletoes and headed back. She watched what the professor did and then gave a small laugh at Freddie's comment. "Oh well at least you'll get a hang of it," she said with a shrug and finished her own work. "Thank you Freddie, for sticking with me when you didn't have to." Juniper finally said with a small smile before taking her mistletoe's to the pile so she'd be ready to leave. No more forest trips for her for a bit at least.
