Fifth Years; Lesson Two

Professor Lyra Potter was sitting at her desk, waiting patiently for her students to all arrive. On every desk there was a chalk board eraser. Some students seem puzzled when they noticed them, but no one commented. The woman smiled excitedly as she looked at her watch, deciding it was time to start the lesson.

"Let's get right to work, shall we? We are going to begin to vanish things this week. Shouldn't be too hard to practice on these - unlike future lessons, this week we will be working on things that don't move." She said with a hint of mystery, letting them wonder what they would be doing later in the term. Walking around the classroom, Lyra looked at her students, motioning to the object in front of them. "So, we are starting with erasers and will move up from there. This is a pretty straight forward spell, it just takes a bit more magic to work it than your normal transfiguration." Having made it back to her desk, Lyra picked up an eraser.

"The wand movement is the standard three tap method. You do not need to say the item that is being vanished, but you do need to focus on it. If you are not concentrating on the object, you may vanish the wrong thing." She said, then demonstrated the spell to them. Tapping the eraser three times, she then said "Evanesco!" and made the eraser disappear. Smiling brightly, she looked up to the class and spoke again. "There are enough extra erasers for you to practice again if you wish. I will be walking around if you need any help."

With that, she allowed the students to begin to work.

Homework: RP the lesson.

Aura's curiosity bubbled over as she eyes the small chalkboard eraser in front of her. The promise of moving onto "things that don’t move" this week, with an implication of something more challenging later, intrigued her. She listened closely to Professor Potter’s explanation, committing every detail of the wand movement and focus to memory. She was ignoring the name for now, a famous one in her part of the world for sure, even if she was born here, she went to school in Scotland. The demonstration was mesmerising, and Aura couldn’t help but admire how smoothly the eraser disappeared into nothingness. When it was time to practice, Aura took a deep breath, and gripped her wand tightly. She tapped the eraser three times, her brow furrowed as she concentrated on the object. “Evanesco!” she said, her voice steady but laced with anticipation. The eraser shimmered, then vanished completely. Her eyes widened in delight at her success, but she wasn't surprised, she'd always been a very good student. Eager to perfect her technique, she grabbed another eraser and repeated the process, this time focusing on her wand movement to ensure precision. As she worked, Aura made a mental note to ask Professor Potter later about how the spell scales for larger or living objects. The thrill of mastering such an advanced spell filled her with determination for the term ahead.

With the potential guidance of Professor Pirrip available to her, Audrey was more determined than ever to do well in Transfiguration. It was hard not to talk to Teddy about her plans, of course, but for once she wanted to wait until she'd earned the go-ahead. There was a risk of her plans falling through, although Audrey wouldn't let that happen if she could help it. The disappointment would be tremendous if they did. So instead she was just going to focus on excelling in the lessons. Audrey wondered why the professor was being so mysterious about what was coming up. It was obvious, wasn't it? Once they'd mastered vanishing on inanimate objects, then it would be vanishing animate beings. That was what they'd done with switching spells.

Audrey had a little extra confidence under her belt today, but she had to keep her focus. She stared at the eraser for a while, boring it into her mind before she even tried to attempt the spell. She had to prove she was considering her faults and overcoming them if she wanted to become an animagus, after all. "Evanesco," she intoned, clearly, so focused on the eraser that it did, indeed, erase itself from existence. Sometimes, she wondered if socks had vanishing spells embedded into them. That would explain why half the time she could only find one. Nonetheless, she completed the spell and felt quite satisfied with herself for doing so. At least she saved her sock musing until after vanishing the eraser.

Marley was still unsure about Transfiguration, but she realised that she needed to give the subject a try, The Hufflepuff quickly packed up the things she needed for the lesson before quickly making her way to her Transfiguration classroom. Once she arrived, she took a seat in the spot she had sat in last week. The Hufflepuff then took out the things she needed for the lesson and placed them on the desk in front of her.

Marley moved her attention towards the professor as she got started with the lesson. Marley quite liked Professor Potter, she seemed nice. The Hufflepuff listened carefully to what she had to say. Marley nodded as the professor explained what to do. It wasn't long before it was their turn to try the spell. She tapped on the object three times as instructed, making sure to also concentrate. "Evanesco," Marley said with confidence, and she surprised herself with the fact that the item did infact disappear.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Marley quickly packed up her things, as well as tidied up her area. She then says a quick yet appreciative thanks to the professor before heading out of the classroom with the rest of her friends and classmates, quite proud of herself with what she had accomplished.

Teddy took his seat beside Audrey in Transfiguration class, and immediately checked out the chalk eraser on his desk. He picked it up, half expecting it to have legs or something since this was Transfiguration. He put it back down disappointed that it was just a chalk eraser. He listened to Professor Potter then took out his wand. He focused on the eraser but was distracted by Audrey making it disappear immediately, so did Marley and that new girl Aurora. It must be easy then.

Teddy focused on the eraser and imagined it being erased, the irony of this item being chosen suddenly dawning on him. He focused, then using the three tap method, said "Evanesco" The eraser disappeared and Teddy sighed, he could relax now. It was a pity that they could not unvanish items, it made the spell much less useful than it otherwise could have been. At the end of the lesson he packed up his things and left the classroom, wondering about where they were vanishing items to exactly.

Callie walked into the transfiguration classroom and took the same spot in the room as the week before. She looked to the professor as the woman walked through the lesson and what they were to do. The vanishing spell. She nodded and then took the eraser and her wand. She imagined it vanishing, and then pointed her wand at it, tapped three times and then said. ”Evanesco,”. It took a couple of times for her to get it and then she had it. It vanished. Callie practiced the spell again, and again until the lesson was wrapped up and she was allowed to go.

Enoch walked into the transfiguration classroom and took his usual spot in the room. His gaze moves to the professor at the front of the class as the woman got started, but given they were just finally doing the spell they’d learnt in the previous week, it’s not exactly difficult. He half listened to the few instructions but he didn’t particularly need them. Just glad when the professor handed out erasers and let them get started. Enoch took his wand and then tapped the eraser three times and said, ”Evanesco,” It took a few tries before he got it, and then he got another and did it again. Practicing the spell over and over until the professor wrapped things up and he was able to leave.

Friday walked into the transfiguration classroom and hoped they would immediately get into what the lesson was. No wasting time, since they had already gone over the incantation and then wand movement. The professor did give a bit of a lecture, but it thankfully wasn’t that long and then they were straight into what the lesson was about. Doing the spell. Friday took an eraser and pointed her wand at it. She tapped three times and said, ”Evanesco,” It took her longer than she’d like to admit for her to be able to do the spell. But she did manage it and just about managed to practice again before the lesson was wrapped up and she was able to leave.

Lucy entered the classroom, wondering how tricky she'd find the spell. In truth, she'd been practicing somewhat, eager to do well. She looked at the chalk board eraser, finding it a little humourous to erase an eraser but keeping the obvious joke to herself. "Evanesco," she said, tapping three times, and the chalk board eraser vanished immediately. Practice had paid off, Lucy stepping up to the front to try more. She did very well, apparently she was talented at vanishing spells. That was good to know though whether that was an important skill would wait to be seen. Lesson wrapped up, Lucy took her things and left.

Aunt Lyra didn’t waste any time getting the lesson started once everyone had taken their seats in the classroom. After having an introduction to the vanishing spell in their first lesson they would actually be trying to perform it this time. They would be starting with erasers which she made sound easy as they wouldn’t move. Millie listened to her aunt explain the wand movements and incantation to perform the vanishing spell. Once the demonstration was over Millie took out her wand and an eraser and started to work on trying to vanish it. It was difficult, the first two times she tried it nothing happened, Millie grumbled but she was determined to get it done so she kept trying. “Evanesco,” Eventually, the eraser on her desk vanished and she felt a huge sense of relief. She kept practicing for the rest of the lesson, managing to make another eraser disappear before she started packing up to leave.
