Fifth Years; Lesson Three

Professor Lyra Potter was busy working with a case on her desk as the students filed into the room. She began to walk around as she greeted them, handing each a snail. "Welcome, welcome. Please sit down quickly. We need to get right to work. This week we are going to work with something a bit more difficult. Snails are invertebrates, which will help make this a bit easier, but you do still need to concentrate more than with the erasers from last week."

Moving to the front, she put the extras in the case again, and turned to the class. "The method will be the same as always. However, with a living creature, you do need to remember that splinching is possible. Who knows what splinching is?" She looked around, and noted that a few hands were raised. She called on one, and listened to the answer. "Exactly. Thank you. Now we need to make sure that we are vanishing the entire creature, not just part of it." she smiled, then moved to take a snail out of the case. Setting it on her desk, she smiled at the class.

"Now, I want to mention that it is important to remember a bit of safety with vanishing spells. Never use them on another human being. It is not safe to do. You may land yourself in trouble with the Ministry if you ignore my warnings. Now, back to our little friend here." She smiled and then raised her wand, and with three taps in the air above the snail she said the spell and the snail was gone. "There. Nothing horrible. Now I want you all to try. I will be walking around as always if you need help."

It was just one of those days where Aura hated everything and there was very little she could do about it, though she wished that wasn't the case. She listened intently as Professor Potter explained the challenge of the day, her attention sharpening as she was handed a snail. When the professor asked about splinting, her hand shot up. "Splinching happens when part of the object or creature doesn't vanish properly, leaving behind pieces or causing injury." She would hopefully be learning apparition next year, and it would do her well to keep that in mind, she knew. She watched as the professor demonstrated the spell for them again, vanishing the snail with the ease of someone who'd been doing it for years. When it was her turn, she took a deep breath, and then tried to remind herself of the important of knowing this. She tapped the snail three times and said "Evanesco". The snail shimmered and then vanished completely. She gave herself a bit of a congratulations and a pat on the back before class was dismissed.

Callie walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in the room, she was sure they would be continuing with the vanishing spell, since the professor hadn’t mentioned them doing anything else within the semester. She nodded along as the woman told them a little about what splinching was, which sounded pretty horrendous. Then they were allowed to get started. Callie took her wand and the snail, and apologised to the little thing before she cast, ”Evanesco,” and after a few tries it vanished. She was able to practice a couple more times before the professor wrapped up the lesson and they were all dismissed.

Enoch walked into the transfiguration classroom, taking his usual spot in the room. He looked up at the professor, though he knew what they would be doing in this lesson. He didn’t really care about splinching. He knew it was a thing but it didn’t matter not currently. He took the snail when it was handed to him and then took his wand. He thought about it vanishing and then said. ”Evanesco,” It took a couple of tries, but it did vanish. He smiled to himself when it did. Then he grabbed another and practiced again. He then headed out of the room, not needing to stick around given that he’d managed it.

Teddy took his seat in the Transfiguration classroom for a practical lesson on vanishing snails. He noted that it was important to focus to avoid splinching the animal. He didn't want to do that since they were essentially killing it anyway and he didn't want it to suffer too. He watched the demonstration then taking a deep breath, Teddy focused all his concentration on the snail in front of him. "Evanesco," he said, and to his satisfaction, the snail vanished without a trace. He smiled, pleased with his success, he was already looking forward to telling his dad about it later. At the end of the lesson he thanked Professor Potter then left the classroom.

Lucy was honestly a bit nervous about this one. She listened as another student explained splinching, and Lucy suddenly wasn't so sure about her abilities to vanish anything - object or animal. But that was what was required of her, so she steeled her nerves and gave it her best shot. "Evanesco!" she said, and the snail disappeared for the most part, though a layer of slime remained. She wondered if it was possible to vanish the slime along with the snail, or if that was what was meant to happened. She made sure to note down 'do not use on humans' although she secretly thought it would be a fun thing to do to Vanity. It's not like that would be such a bad thing, right? Lucy then felt ashamed of such thoughts, pretending she hadn't had them. As the lesson ended, Lucy packed away her things and left.
