Fifth Years: Lesson Four

The fifth years had a lot to cover this year for their OWLs and if Angel was being honest, he hadn’t exactly managed his time very well this semester. He was hoping to make up some lost ground by squeezing in some extra plants today after finding shy little flitterbloom in one of the back greenhouses.

Smiling at the fifth years as they entered the greenhouse, Angel motioned everyone over to the two plants he had set up for today, hoping to cover everything quickly so they could get onto to the practical side of things.

“Alright, we’ve got two plants to go over today, this lovely Flitterbloom here and also the Flutterby bush,” he said, motioning to the flitterbloom in front of him and then the flutterby bushes set up about the greenhouse for each student. “Flitterbloom is often mistaken for Devil’s Snare, note the tendrils,” Angel said as he held his hand out to the flitterbloom, letting it timidly reach out and grasp one of his fingers. “However, they are far less dangerous or aggressive. You’re welcome to come say hi to this one later if you’d like.

Our other lovely plant today is the flutterby bush. Most extraordinary plant, it only blooms once a century,” he said, lifting up one of the plant’s glossy leaves and watching as the plant juddered in response. “The blooms are said to adapt their scent to be whatever is most appealing to the observer.” Angel was glad he'd gotten to experience a Flutterby blooming a few years ago, though he doubted he had the patience to wait for another one to come into bloom anytime soon. “We’ll be working on trimming and pruning them today, which as you might imagine requires some care. Watch me, we’ll be trimming away the overgrown areas and any dead leaves, just be careful with those shears,” he said, picking up his own shears and demonstrating by trimming back a small section. It certainly required some careful accuracy as the plant shook and shuddered and Angel decided he’d complete the rest of the pruning later perhaps.

Right, your turn now. Try not to get too overzealous with the shears, and watch your fingers,” he said mildly, retreating to a chair to keep half an eye on the class as they began their own pruning projects.

RP the lesson. No homework, though feel free to speculate on what the flutterby flowers might smell like to you.

Hinata entered the greenhouse, taking a deep breath as she joined the others to watch the Professor with the plants that were going to be discussed for the day. She listened carefully as he introduced the flitterbloom, finding it to be quite fascinating. She hadn't really seen many magical plants up close, but it was interesting that it resembled Devil's Snare. When the next plant - flutterby - was introduced, she found that even more interesting. A plant that could only bloom once a century must be very rare, so it was perhaps a little amazing that they had one in the school. She watched as how to trim was demonstrated and noted that it was quite doable. She took a deep breath as she picked up her shears and began to trim, lifting one of its glossy leaves and trimming the overgrown sections. The flutterby shuddered slightly under each cut, making her nervous the whole time.

Bailey hadn’t really been enjoying Herbology but she was just about hanging on in the knowledge the end of the year was close and she would get a considerable break from Professor Castillo and his subject. She made her way into the greenhouse and listened to the man as he discussed the two plants they would be learning about. She was stunned to hear that the plants they would be trimming only bloomed once a century, how had he acquired so many for them to work on? She assumed it was an impressive thing to do, giving the Slytherin head of house the benefit of the doubt for once. Once he had demonstrated the process of trimming the flutterby bush, Bailey picked up her sheers and got to work doing the same, she was delicate and meticulous in her work until she had done what she needed to do to prune her flutterby bush, the flowers she pruned from the bush seemed to smell of an odd combination of ink, strawberry shampoo and hair gel, it took her a moment to place the scent and blushed when it hit her. Once the lesson was over she put away her tools and notes and made her way out of the classroom.

June made her way to the greenhouse and gave Professor Castillo an sugar sweet smile. And made herself ready for class looking over to the plants he would discuss today. She made sure to take some quick notes in her notebook of the size that could fit into her pocket. Something she learned from muggle studies which was actually handy. She didn't liked the plant already, why were they always so angry. They made her think of hufflepuffs, people thought they were nice and all and innocent like an plant but they were the devils. June didn't want to say hi to the plant, but she would do anything for Castillo she figured more than for Landon at least to get an excellent grade.

She watched the professor going over to the other plant and looked at him as he demonstrated what they had to do. The flutterby bush was more interesting than the other, an rare plant it seemed. As June could go over to her plant she directly noticed the plant had an nice smell, like roses and in a way also like her fathers whiskey smelled like. But in a way June got an smile on her face by an plant, and that didn't happen a lot. Than she took her sheers and did what she needed to do to prune her flutterby bush. The smell of the flowers was still there, and it was kind of interesting that it would smell different for everyone in this room. As Castillo walked by June smiled at him. '' Professor, what do you smell with this flutterby bush?'' The blonde asked him. And wondered what it would be, she knew he like his coffee americano. But it was good information. When she was done with pruning her flutterby bush she left the greenhouse as the lesson came to an end.

Angel was almost surprised to see what looked like something close to a genuine smile on June's face as she worked on her pruning. She was a diligent student and one of his best, definitely, but he didn't necessarily think she liked Herbology all that much which arguably made her work ethic that much more impressive.

Her question as he passed caused Angel to pause, he'd gotten to see the Flutterby bloom a few years again and the smell still lingered in his memory, causing a soft smile of his own. "Hmm, old leather, anise, and kiwi fruit," he said. The smell of his favourite armchair, the astringent ointment Josephine always smelt of after a shift in the Hospital Wing, and the sweet smelling shampoo the girls had been using since they were little. A good combo, in his opinion.
