Fifth Years, Lesson Five

"Good morning class! Almost at the end of term, nervous yet?" Misha gave a light laugh. While he was laughing about this now, he remembered clearly about what his OWLs were like. Frantic studying in the hope of remembering at least something. Anything. "As you can see, another quiz sits upon your table. Closed book, and begin!" He moved round his table and sat on the chair, propping his feet up onto the table, while taking a sip of his coffee.

1. What does the Confundus Charm do?
2. What does the Drought Charm do?
3. What does Descendo do?
4. What does the Bubblehead Charm do?

Misha waited until it was clear all the students were done. "For this lesson, we need to head to a bigger, and more empty classroom. So, come on" He ushered the students out. He seemed to do a lot of that. He moved to the front of the students and lead them to the empty but large classroom at the end of the first floor. He got all the students inside, before standing at the front. For this he had made the room have sufficient light, so that everyone could see, all the desks were to the side of the room, with a vine, rope and chains wrapped around the chairs that were scattered about the room. "Today, fifth years, we will be covering Diffindo- the severing Charm. With this charm you can cut virtually anything that is not magically protected. Chains, ropes, what have you- I've even heard of students being able to replace much more interesting books with the cover of an undesirable textbook. In short, Diffindo cuts things. The efficiency with which you cut will depend on the amount of energy put into the spell and of course pronunciation and wand movement."

Unlike most other lessons, Misha chose to only briefly demonstrate what he meant, using the simple vine, flicking the wand and pronouncing the spell clearly so everyone would see. The vine cut itself apart perfectly. "Using regular wand movement and correct pronunciation you should be able to get the hang of this Charm quickly. You may leave when you have severed three things in total, a vine, a bit of rope, and a length of chain. I recommend starting with the vine and finish with the chain. If you happen to accidentally cut the chairs, I may count it as one of the three things. Begin!"

-RP the lesson, attendance post is fine
Quiz is optional, if you do it, then you get extra credit.

Ah, quizzes, how she loathes thee. Aura quickly looked down at them and mapped out her answers before putting quill to parchment. Once that was done she pushed it to the side to see what they would be working on today. Diffindo, that made sense, though it was a charm she was already vaguely familiar with since it was one of her mother’s favourites. Cut through anything that can. Well, maybe not a wall, but fabric was always a decent choice, and her mum liked to make clothes, most of Aura’s own belongings had been made by her mother, who didn’t go out in public much so didn’t buy much if she could avoid it. All about that recycle thing. Weirdo. She loved her though. She watched the demonstration, trying to calculate the differing strengths between cutting through vines, rope and chains and then stepped up to try for herself. Her first diffindo barely does anything, leaving barely a scratch on the vine, but by her fifth try she’s manages to make it right through the vine. She high-fived herself and then moved on. The chain proved the most difficult, but she wasn’t surprised by that, seeing as it was a chain. Once she was satisfied with her progress, and class had finished up, she headed out.
1. What does the Confundus Charm do? confuses you
2. What does the Drought Charm do? dry up water
3. What does Descendo do? makes things fall
4. What does the Bubblehead Charm do? underwater breathing, creates a bubble around the head

Teddy was having a fantastic semester. His team were Quidditch Champions all round, he'd won the dueling tournament three years running and he'd almost won musical chairs, but he'd take that loss given how well he thought the event had gone overall. All the fun stuff was over now though, and Teddy was focusing on the upcoming OWLs which if he believed his professors, were going to be grueling. He wasn't nervous exactly, but he was feeling the pressure. He wanted Outstanding grades in all subjects, and that meant putting in the work required. He took his seat in the Charms classroom and got started on the quiz.

Once the quiz was done, he worked on the new spell. He cast "Diffindo" at the vines and got it pretty quick. The rope took a little more effort, but the chain was the hardest one. He aimed for the weakest part of the link and cast "Diffindo!" Once he had made his three successful cuts, Teddy packed up and left the classroom. He was going to return to the library to study more before dinner.

1. What does the Confundus Charm do? Confuses the person targeted
2. What does the Drought Charm do? Dries up water
3. What does Descendo do? Lowers the target
4. What does the Bubblehead Charm do? Creates a bubble around the casters head which provides a supply of fresh air and allows for breathing underwater

Lucy was still just happy in herself. Despite losing against Gryffindor, she had a girlfriend. A real, actual, beautiful girlfriend. That was enough to carry Lucy through almost anything.

She settled into class, now expecting the revision quizzes and hence prepared for them (more or less). After doing them, they moved onto a separate classroom and the professor demonstrated how to do the new spell. Lucy gave it a go on the vine first, as suggested. She didn't do too well at first, but the second time she managed to severe the vine cleanly. She moved on to the rope, repeating the process. She got onto the chain near the end of the lesson and although it was a challenge, performed the spell sufficiently enough that the chain severed. It was a lot of work, but Lucy had accomplished it.

1. What does the Confundus Charm do? Confuses the target (person)
2. What does the Drought Charm do? Gets rid of water (but not big bodies like lakes and things)
3. What does Descendo do? Makes things go downwards
4. What does the Bubblehead Charm do? Creates an air bubble around target's head, so they can breathe underwater for a period of time

Dominic was sad that the semester was coming to an end soon, but he still had a couple of more weeks to go before the exams, so he was simply going to make the most of his time. He thought about asking his friends to do study sessions with him, but he was admittedly a little shy at the idea of asking for help. With a sigh, the Hufflepuff just packed his belongings into his backpack and headed to his classes.

As Dominic entered the charms classroom, he wasn't surprised at the short quiz in front of him on his desk, so just filled that out as best as he could before reverting his attention to the front of the room for the lesson. They weren't going to stay in the classroom for long however, as the professor instructed them to follow him to another classroom where there were some vines and ropes and chains hanging from the ceiling. The professor explained that they were going to be severing these items with the new spell. He demonstrated briefly how it would work with a vine, which definitely seemed like the easiest of the three, before leaving the class to fend for their own.

A little nervous about how this would turn out, Dominic retrieved his wand from the pocket of his robes and headed over to a vine to start attempting the spell. He imagined it happening first before attempting to cast the spell. "Diffindo." he said, beaming as the vine cut itself it half, the bottom half falling to the ground. He then attempted the spell on a piece of rope, which was definitely a little harder, however still doable. The last one was a chain and this one proved extremely difficult. It wasn't until the last minute of the lesson that Dominic managed to get this one. He knew that this spell was going to require a bit of practice. He thanked the professor at the end of the lesson before heading straight to his next class.

Quiz said:
1. What does the Confundus Charm do?
It is cast on a person and makes them extremely confused.

2. What does the Drought Charm do?
It dries up very small bodies of water, like small puddles.

3. What does Descendo do?
It causes an object to fall or go downwards.

4. What does the Bubblehead Charm do?
It is in the name - it creates a bubble around a person's head, enabling them to breathe underwater until the spell wears off after a short period of time.

The Slytherin fifth year could not imagine that they were already getting close to the OWLs and then the NEWT level courses would be next. That sounded absolutely like hell to him. He hated that he would have to work really hard to do well, or decently. Dante Styx did not like to work too hard at anything. He just wanted to have some fun and for a good reason. He found that if he did not leave, he would be late. He did not want that because he did not want that sort of attention. He grabbed his bag and left the dorm room in a hurry.

Dante walked in the Charms classroom, and sat down. He did the quiz once more, and then turned it in. He waited for the rest to be done before they could get started on the next spell. This one was Diffindo. He looked forward to it a little too much. He moved to another classroom, and soon, they were given things to sever. Dante did that, of course, but he also cut the chair every time. Was it on purpose? Probably. All he knew was that this was a great stress reliever.

Marley walked into the classroom and took a seat in her usual spot. She then took out the things she needed for the lesson and placed them on the desk in front of her. Marley liked charms very much. The charms and spells they had been learning the past few lessons had been fun and exciting. Marley moved her attention towards the professor as the professor started the lesson off. The mention of the semester nearing its end had surprised Marley. She couldn't believe that the school year had gone by so quickly. As the lesson progressed, they were doing another quiz, which Marley found quite fun and helpful. Marley made sure to answer the quiz as quickly as she could, but best of her ability.

After they did the quiz, they then moved on to learning a new spell today, which Marley was excited to learn. The Hufflepuff listened carefully to what the professor had to say, making sure to make as many notes as she could as the professor spoke about the spell. Marley nodded her head along from time to time to show that she was understanding the content that was being given. She then watched as the professor demonstrated the spell, and then it wasn't long before it was their turn to give the spell a go. Marley had managed to get the spell right after a few tries, as well as trying it on different materials that were offered.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Marley quickly packed up her things as well as tided up her area. She says a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out of the classroom with her friends and the rest of her classmates. She was enjoying what she was learning so far.

1. What does the Confundus Charm do?
Makes the targeted person confused

2. What does the Drought Charm do?
Dries up small amounts of water

3. What does Descendo do?
Makes the targeted object fall downwards

4. What does the Bubblehead Charm do?
Causes the targeted person to have a bubble around their head. This usually used for those that want to go underwater and this helps them breath underwater

More quizzes again, Millie tried not to visibly sigh, but she did give a little laugh at Professor Haden’s comment about the OWLs. She quickly did the quiz and then focused on the way the classroom changed so they could learn a new spell. Diffindo was a very useful charm, she was sure, especially with what she’d been hearing about it. The demonstration seemed simple enough and she followed the wand movements with her wand. She flicked her wrist and practiced diffindo for the rest of the lesson.

Veronica was sick of taking quizzes, but as had become tradition in Professor Haden’s class one was waiting for her at her desk when she arrived. She filled it in as quickly as she could and put it to one side. They then moved onto that lessons spell, Diffindo. The demonstration was pretty quick but it showed what the spell did. Veronica then took out her wand and got to work, the vine cut pretty quick, as did the rope. It was the chain that proved the most challenging, for whatever reason her severing charm wasn’t effective enough to cut the chain, but after a few attempts she was successful. Once she had done all three she showed Professor Haden and made her way out of the classroom.
