Dark Secrets

"The price?" Esmerelda spat the word as though it was poisinous. "What, having Katie hate you? As far as I'm aware, she does already, so it won't make any difference there." Esmerelda rolled her eyes, making the sarcasm in the statement inescapably clwar to Cassandra. She was still furious, ignoring the repair of the vase. "I understand you're angry with Lapis; I am too. And don't think she won't get some sort of discipline for this once you're gone. I just will not allow you to curse my daughter. I'm curious: what exactly did you think it would achieve?"

Esmerelda was lying to pacify her friend. After what had happened, she had no intention of punishing Lapis. The conversation the girl had overheard was punishment enough, for both of them. Although it didn't look like it, while still seeting herself, Esmerelda was trying to calm Cassandra down. It didn't work. She hadn't really expected it would.
