Accompanying his mum at the shops wasn't exactly a new thing for Jonah. Most of his siblings preferred to stay home but Jonah had never had any issues with going out. It looked like his mum was itching to go out as well, which probably made sense since she was staying at home more now than she had been for as long as he knew. It had always been his dad at home, but with his dad teaching at Hogwarts, the roles were more reversed. No wonder Mum had said that she could do the shopping despite Dad looking at her skeptically. When the necessary purchases were made, they'd somehow found themselves browsing at a rather large shop for clothes. He wasn't sure what exactly his mum needed to buy, but Jonah just let her be, following her around as she looked at various things. At least until he got distracted. It wasn't even anything too distracting. He'd just been running his fingers through different clothes and he paused when he felt one that was particularly soft and comfy. He looked at it, and it was, well... it was a house dress? Indoor dress? Sort of one like what his sisters would wear around the house if they weren't going out, or one that they would wear to bed. He had wondered a couple of times what it would be like to wear them since they looked a lot comfier than his own clothes. He didn't want to wear one outside, but he wondered if trying one would be bad. He couldn't help but use another hand to run through the fabric just because it felt so nice before he sighed. Probably not. He really should go find his mum.

Taylor had been itching to get out and about for weeks, and it wasn't that she couldn't, it was that she couldn't with the babies. Lewis was a bit of a wanderer, so going out with him was a full time job in and of itself, and taking the twins with her as well, she only had so many eyes and hands. Since they'd been born, she'd still been coaching, but a lot of it was done more long distance - not so much that she couldn't show up, but she didn't like leaving her kids in the hands of other people, and all of her friends that she trusted to watch them, Kelsey, Arianna, Ai, they weren't in the country, they were spread everywhere else but in Japan, it was rather annoyed really. She spotted a pair of shoes she thought Jonah might like, and picked them up, turning to look for her son, only to notice he wasn't with her. She frowned, before finding him behind in one of the clothing aisles.

He was lingering by one of the clothing racks, his fingers brushing one of the dresses hanging up. “Jonah, sweetie,” she said, holding up the shoes, “I found some shoes you might like, do you want to try them on?” She wandered back to him, eyes flicking over the dress he was playing with briefly. “Oh that looks comfy, what are you looking at this for?” One of his sisters, she assumed. Rose might like this one, the colouring suited her, Taylor thought. “We have plenty of time if theres something specific you wanted to look at.”

Jonah felt like he'd been caught red-handed when his mum was suddenly beside him without him noticing. So surprised that he'd instinctively turned around, and hid his hands behind him as if he was a child caught with a hand in the cookie jar. He blinked at the shoes his mum was holding and scrunched his nose. It looked fine. But they also looked... pinchy. Maybe they weren't? He'd been about to tell his mum that he could try the shoes on when she asked what he was looking at the dress for. That promptly brought a blush from his cheeks up to his ears and down to his neck. "N-nothing!" he said too quickly shaking his head and his hands in front of him, before he decided to take Mum's wrist and try to pull her away from the too comfy dress. "I can try the shoes on, are they in my size?" he asked hoping to distract her.

Taylor couldn’t help but chuckle a little as Jonah scrambled to change the subject. She wasn’t quite sure what he was changing the subject for, or why, but she was enjoying the way his sweet face was turning the brightest shade of pink she thought she’d ever seen on him. She let him tug at her wrist without protest, though she kept her voice light and teasing as she followed along with him. “Alright, alright,” she said with a little laugh, squeezing his hand gently. “I won’t press. For now.” There was something there, he wanted something, she could tell, she just wasn’t entirely sure what or why. He wasn’t usually shy about this sort of thing, of all her kids Jonah had always been the most willing to shop with her, except for Hina, who usually came along when there was two of them, because she tended to get lost. Corey when he was younger, but these days he was married so, he usually preferred to shop with his husband, she imagined.

She held up the box to check the label properly, not wanting to impart on him anything strictly unsuitable. “Looks like they had a few in your size,” she added, giving him a warm smile. “Let’s find a bench and you can try them on. If you don’t like them, we won’t get them. Simple as that.” She said, because she wasn’t the forceful shopper. She had never made her kids buy things they didn’t want unless it was something for their education, like when they bought the book packages for them all, and their wands, though none of them had not wanted their wands, which was definitely a relief. She tucked a bit of his hair behind his ear as they walked. Jonah was definitely the softest of all of her boys, and probably most of her children. “And for the record, you don’t have to be embarrassed around me, love. You’re allowed to like soft things too. Nothing wrong with being comfy.”

The blush wouldn't go away. And Jonah could tell because his face and his ears felt hot. Like burning hot. And his mother's chuckles weren't helping any because obviously he'd definitely been caught with his hand in the cookie jar and his mother was just waiting for him to confess. That was obviously what's going on. And it made Jonah embarrassed because it's not like this was the first time he's thought about it but this was probably the first time he's been so obvious about his curiosity. And of course, his mother had to have seen it. He took the shoes that were his size as he sat down to put them on. They really did look okay, and he didn't mind how they looked like. He put them on and well... he supposed they only looked pinchy because they didn't feel pinchy when he was sitting down. He looked at his mum though when she tucked his hair, it was getting a bit long so maybe he should have her or dad cut it when he got home. He didn't like it getting to his eyes. "B-but it's weird, isn't it?" he said softly like it was a big shameful secret. And he sort of felt like that really. "Kakeru's gonna laugh at me when he finds out. Yuki and Rica and Sayuri too," he said forlornly. He didn't want his siblings to laugh at him and they were definitely gonna laugh was what he thought. He didn't think Corey would because Corey just didn't seem fazed by anything. He doesn't think Hina or Rose would because they wore dresses all the time at home but what if they thought Jonah was weird for doing the same thing. What would Lewis and Eli think?! What would his dad think?!

Taylor watched him and then sat down beside him. The shoes were a cover, a little bit, they both could tell, but it was okay, because she wanted to work with him at his own pace. Pushing him too hard one way or another was only going to make him not want to do it, or think he shouldn’t, and whilst she hadn’t exactly expected or prepared for it, she didn’t think there was anything wrong with it either. Why shouldn’t Jonah like comfy things? Why shouldn’t he like dresses? There was nothing wrong with the fact that mens and women’s kimono’s could sometimes be interchangeable, and the Japanese were not the only culture who were flowing clothing. If Jonah wanted to try something that was considered non-traditional, she didn’t see why he couldn’t.

“Hey, it’s not weird, Jonah. It’s just something you’re interested in. You know boys and girls can do anything and like anything they want, I’ve always said you could if you wanted to - so why should something like this be different? Just because it’s the norm, doesn’t mean it can’t be done.” She could understand mayeb why he might be a little hesitant, because his siblings could sometimes be a bit nasty - but that was true of most siblings she found. Something like this she thought they might be silly about, but she knew they would never really judge him for it. Traditional roles didn’t exist in their home, they never had. One only had to look at Taylor and Conan. “They might be silly about it, but not because they think it’s wrong, Honey. That’s just what siblings do sometimes, you know that.” She said, making sure he was really listening to her, so she was saying everything in Japanese. She had found that of all of her kids, Jonah seemed to be the one who’d picked up english thr worst, not for any particular reason than perhaps he just found Japanese the easier of the two languages to express themselves in. Eli often spoke english at home, as did Rose and Yuki. Corey too, she found, especially given his husband was not Japanese either.

“Siblings laugh and tease and make jokes, but they would never judge you for being brave enough to try something a little different.” And if they did, she’d have some choice words for them because that is not how she raised her kids. “And your dad? He’ll still think you’re Jonah. That’s not gonna change because of a piece of clothing. You are not weird for wanting to be comfortable. Or curious. Or for liking something soft and cozy. That just makes you human, love. Even I sometimes wear a dress. They make me feel pretty.”
