Chilean Quake

There has been a magnitude 8.8 quake in Chile, triggering Tsunami warnings for most of the Pacific. In NZ, Dunedin's Tsunami is about 15m late. The Tsunami that hit the Chatham Is. was only a few centimetres high. If you're following @EQWatch on Twitter, you will have probably been spammed by all the aftershock tweets.

In Chile, the quake has destroyed buildings, airports and bridges, and struck at about 3.35am. Many people rushed out of their homes in their pjs, and telephone and power lines are down across the central part of the country. So far officials have announced at least 145 people dead.

Chile has probably already been hit by a Tsunami, and people in the Pacific, especially on the smaller islands, need to make sure they're at high ground, safe from any coming Tsunamis.

People are looting shops, pharmacies and factories in Chile, and a lot of the country is on fire.

The quake was felt as far away as Brazil. Compared to the Haiti quake of 7.0, this was massive. The White House is standing by ready to help out. Chilean officials haven't asked for help yet.

This is quite horrible. Does anybody know people in Chile here?
Even though Haiti's quake was so much smaller in comparison to this one (though still giant when compared to most quakes we have), I still find myself more concerned with Haiti - though I suppose it's simply that Haiti is nearer to my heart, with my having been there and all.
Chile and its people, and everybody who will assist with relief, will surely be in my thoughts and prayers.

Update: The quake was 800 times bigger than the Haiti Quake.

I find Chile to be in my heart, but I don't know anyone there. I guess it's only coz I'm learning Spanish.

Some people from my Spanish Class were meant to be visiting Argentina and Chile in September. I wonder what it'll be like then?
