((Woah look what happened! That'll teach me for going to sleep haha! Nicely done, guys!))
Jessame Rose was thrilled with Tohoru's reaction to her gift. "It's a taniwha," she explained, "a guardian of rivers and things, a water spirit." JR felt strongly about her Maori heritage, although she knew very little about it. Being raised by pakeha in a largely white town, all she really knew was what she'd learned from books. She giggled though, as her boyfriend pulled her gift on over his formal clothes. She had to admit, he looked good in it. He looked good in everything, though. "I'm glad you like it." She felt like she was in a fairy tale as Tohoru twirled her onto the dance floor. She felt giddy with love.
To be honest, she was a little disappointed when they stopped dancing, but if it meant Tohoru would feel less guilty about leaving his sister alone, she didn't really mind. She smiled at Hoshi sympathetically, although the girl didn't look as upset as Tohoru had described. "Hi Hoshi, it's nice to meet you finally. Tohoru talks about you all the time." When Hoshi pretty much ignored her, JR turned to Tohoru, but he was already gone to get drinks. She was glad though, that he had kissed her. It made her feel more justified in standing here with his sister if Hoshi at least understood that Tohoru cared about her. She was filled with happiness that they no longer had to keep their relationship a secret, although she did kind of miss their clandestine meetings and whispered goodbyes. JR remained standing with Hoshi and her friends - she really wasn't alone at all, as Tohoru had suggested - and waited for Tohoru to return.
She was just thinking he was taking an awfully long time to get drinks when she heard a girl's raised voice. Looking in the direction of the ruckus, she spotted her beloved Tohoru, but he... he was holding another girl close, even as she glared at him. Her first reaction was one of extreme worry for Tohoru - what right did that girl have to treat her wonderful Tohoru in that way? But then... the way they spoke to each other. They must know each other well... but JR had no idea who the girl was. She thought she knew everything about Tohoru until now.
The pretty girl looked over in her direction and took a step back from Tohoru. Her eyes were ablaze with anger as she seemed to stare into JR's eyes. Jess was terrified. And not just of the strange girl's anger... she was beginning to understand something deep within herself, something she couldn't put into words or thoughts just yet, something she didn't want to be true.
Then she heard the girl say it. The truth. Tohoru was - "messing around" with her. Jessame Rose, the tramp. It was like a kick in the gut. Hard, sharp, merciless. But even as the girl drew her hand back, JR still wanted to rush to his side and protect him. Why?
When her hand met Tohoru's face, hard, all the good feelings she'd felt about Tohoru suddenly dissipated. This was his girlfriend. That's why they had had to keep their relationship a secret. He was sneaking around, behind the pretty girl's back. What a big, fat, mean... bastard! As she thought that word about Tohoru (a word she would never normally use), she realised that he'd lied to her about everything. About Hoshi being sad, about where he was darting off to when he said he was going to see Hoshi, about why they'd crept around in empty classrooms and dark staircases instead of in broad daylight, about his feelings for her, about everything. JR felt the fire rise within her. She took a step towards the couple, intent on delivering some real damage.
But then she heard Tohoru's words. "JR is not a tramp," "Twice the girl you'll ever be," her heart melted, and at the same time she grew aware of all the people watching. She felt a swelling in her chest as they all heard Tohoru speak about her like that, but it was also scary. JR did not like being the centre of attention. She couldn't bring herself to take another step closer. She was torn. She loved Tohoru, didn't she? But he was a... a bastard! And... a liar! But he said those nice things...
And then he grabbed the girl's wrist and twisted it behind her back, pulling it tight ina half-nelson. JR knew then that she hated this boy. She realised at once that he had said all the same things to both girls. All the "you're the most wonderful"s and "I'll never feel this way about anyone else"s, all the "you're all I think about"s and "I love you"s. And the girl's comment about all the other girls dumping him... Jessame Rose felt ashamed. It seemed everyone had known what Tohoru was like except for her.
When she heard the last words though: Tohoru was slumming it with her... "scum"... Now everyone thought she was scum? Her eyes filled with hot, angry, heartbroken tears and she rushed forward. The moment after the girl kicked Tohoru, Jessame Rose slammed into both of them, hoping to knock them off balance. Without another glance, she turned to run. Her natural reaction: run away. She stopped just long enough to shout over her shoulder, "I hate you, Tohoru Koshiba! I wish I'd never met you!"
