Jessame Rose committed the name to memory Alex McPeak when she heard he would be the same year as herself.

"Oh, so he hasn't started yet... so you've just moved here? You're new?"

Jess had always been afraid of talking to older kids; she'd always been scared that they'd make fun of her or know a whole lot more than she did, but this Luke, he seemed... well, he seemed like he was only eleven himself. She wondered, not for the first time, if he just looked old for his age. In any case, she was far more confident talking to him now than she had been when she started. First of all, he wasn't nearly as intimidating as she'd thought, then there was the fact that she'd already told him what she was uncomfortable about, so she had nothing to hide. And then there was this - he really seemed like he wanted someone to talk to.... except he wasn't doing much talking... but he didn't seem to want to be left alone.

"It must be hard," she guessed, "just up and moving away from all your friends to come somewhere new. Do you like New Zealand?"

"Oh," Jess didn't really know what to say. She felt sorry for him; he seemed so lonely. She considered offering to be his friend, but a) he probably didn't want a little girl hanging around, and b) he's a wizard after all.

"Who did you come here with?" she asked, hoping for a less depressing answer.

Jess felt like Luke had to be holding something back. His answers all seemed like they were hiding something deeper. Maybe Jess was just being paranoid. "What about your cousin? He's the reason you came to New Zealand, right? Are your parents here, too? Or his parents? Don't you get along with.. Alex?" she asked, remembering Luke's cousin's name just in time to finish the sentence.

Jess was starting to get frustrated with his roundabout answers, but she knew she was often the same way herself when she wasn't sure what the right thing to say was, so she tried not to show it. "Not really you don't get along? Why?"

Jessame Rose was a little uncomfortable at his answer. Firstly, she wasn't used to boys being interested in girls. She had had a fleeting crush on a boy at the end of last year, but she'd never expected to do anything about it, knowing he was more interested in his Playstation than girls. Well, to be honest, he was probably more interested in school than girls, and that was saying a lot. Secondly, now she knew that Luke a) was capable of beating someone up, b) had no problem beating up someone her age, even though he was bigger and obviously stronger, and c) in her experience so far, only ever smiled when taking about beating someone up. Jess giggled to hide her discomfort. She figured now was as good a time as any to ask: "uh, how old are you?" and then, because she couldn't help herself, "so who's your girlfriend?"

She smiled at him again, for good measure. She would need as many friends as possible around here, and having people dislike her (especially people who beat others up) was far worse than going against what she knew to be right. It didn't matter what she believed, first and foremost were appearances. As long as this guy didn't think she was weird, that was one less person she had to worry about.

"Oh, it was back in Oz," Jess replied. She didn't feel like saying anything else. Jess wasn't used to starting conversations with people, or keeping them going once they'd begun. Luke seemed to want to be with her but not talk, or do anything other than look awkward. It confused her, and every time she said something she seemed to make him more uncomfortable, so she decided she'd just stand there being awkward, just like him. Jess was extremely uncomfortable and felt kind of put out that he didn't even respond to her question about his age. She thought about running away, but she was sure Luke knew this place better than she did, which was not at all. So she just looked at him.

"Um... sorry about your girlfriend?" Jess wasn't really sure what you were supposed to say to someone in this situation. She felt like Luke was waiting for her to say something, but she didn't know what. To be honest, talk of boyfriends and girlfriends always made her uneasy, and she suddenly felt like she was in over her head talking to this older boy, who wasn't just a boy, but a wizard! She was still scared and angry about the whole magic thing, and standing here talking, or not talking as it turned out, wasn't helping anything.

Jess had to stop herself from laughing out loud, afraid she might hurt Luke's feelings. She was so confused, and everything this boy told her seemed to just add up into one great big farce.

She stared at him with her big green eyes, "Wait, so you got into a fight with your cousin, and beat him up, and you're not friends with him anymore, all because of a girl you never even liked...

...Boys are weird.
"

Luke smiled. "kind of but the girl didn't want me any way either i just wanted to kick my cousin butt and yes us boys are weird" he said.

Jessame Rose giggled shyly when Luke confirmed that boys were weird. She was a little scared of him still; she couldn't understand wanting to hurt a cousin - not that she had any, except baby Marla, who she'd only met once. Boys were definitely weird. Almost like an alien species. She decided to change the subject. "I have a question. Maybe it sounds weird, but... you've known about magic your whole life, right?"

Jess had already revealed a lot more than she thought she probably should have to this boy, but it was done now so she might as well get some information. "What things should I know about Hogwarts before I go? What's the most important thing I should know about magic?"
