Monty understood why Mary Lou wanted to do this. But there were a lot of important decisions she could make that didn't involve committing the rest of her life to somebody. It concerned him that her fondness for Wendall was inspired at least in part by the basic respect she deserved from any relationship; but if she was so determined to take control of her life, and had made up her mind that this was the way she wanted to do it, Monty supposed it was a good thing she had chosen Wendall, he who would be kind enough to break her heart gently if he had to, and resilient enough to recover if she broke his. Who was to say it wouldn't last, anyway? Who was to say they shouldn't do marry, as if anybody knew their love like they did? Not Monty. Besides, he could see it in Mary Lou's eyes: he couldn't have stopped her if he'd tried. All that his further objections would have achieved was to make her feel guilty and miserable, and then she surely would have gone ahead with it anyway, only with a dampened spirit.

Monty turned to Leda. ”Mm - not quite,” he said. He might not have been able to stop Mary Lou, but he wouldn’t have felt he’d done his duty as the former professor of all the young adults in the room if he didn’t at least insist on taking her for a walk. Preparations for a second ceremony would take no less than an hour, anyway, providing the perfect window of opportunity for a stroll around the gardens. Mervyn and Wendall were left in charge of entertaining the children while Monty and Mary Lou went out through the French doors and started down a neat gravel path flanked with winter shrubs. It was a chilly day, but the path was exposed to the sun, and only a light wind twitched in the grass and made the weeds tremble.

When they had walked a little way, and Mary Lou was no longer riding a wave of adrenaline from Wendall’s proposal, Monty began to talk seriously. He was not an expert in love, and he was vastly underqualified to advise anybody on relationships, but he cared about Mary Lou's welfare, and this was apparent in the questions he asked, the points upon which he pushed her to elaborate, and the pauses he offered her to reflect on how she felt. He did not try to talk her out of marrying Wendall, but gently brought to her awareness a number of points she might not hitherto have considered, and which, had there been any doubt in her mind as to whether she was making the right decision, might have tempered her enthusiasm for long enough for Monty to catch her expression falter, and to feel his concern was valid. But Mary Lou did not falter. And Monty let it go.

As they reached the French doors, but before they went back inside, he turned to her and said, "You'll always be welcome in our family. If I can do anything for you, anything at all, you know where to find me. Shall we?"

There wasn’t a lot that Mary Lou knew about a lot of things, she was still learning and growing as a person and she was going to continue to learn and grow as a person, at least she hoped that she would - and she really wanted Wendall to be with her to support her in that endeavour, as much as she wanted to be there with him and to support him as well. She knew she didn't even have to ask and that Wendall would always be by her side, just as she would want to be by his. She did appreciate the way that Professor Monty was trying to encourage her though, to be her own person. She felt respected in the questions he asked and she appreciated that he was willing to go out of his way to even ask. But she knew, this was what she wanted and she made that clear to him as best she could.

The thing that really threw her though was discovering that Professor Monty was actually related to the Layton's and by that rule, she was about to be related to Professor Monty which, she couldn't lie, was just about the best thing to ever happen to her in her whole life... except for this day as she would marry Wendall of course. It made her even more excited and as she bouncing on her toes excitedly at the news, she voiced to him just how happy this discovery made her as they walked around the garden before coming to their closing arguments and she placed her arm in his, her demeanour much calmer now. "Thank you, Professor. I don't think I can ever thank you enough for the kindness you showed me early on, before anyone else ever did." her mind immediately went to that incident in the potions classroom early on, and she gripped his arm tightly.

"Okay, let's do this!" she said, pumping her arm in the air.

Wendall's nerves were on high alert when his fiancée was escorted out into the gardens by Monty, wondering if whether Mary Lou would no longer be interested in the idea of getting married right here right now when they returned from their chat. To keep himself busy however, he did his best to get the other members of the family ready for a second wedding of the day. Of course Wendall wished that Mary Lou's family could be here too, but what was stopping them from having a second ceremony once they reached the farm? The last six months had flown by so quickly for the pair of them, but every moment felt like it had meant to be, and there was no doubt in Wendall's mind that he was doing the right thing.

As Monty and Mary Lou returned from the gardens, Wendall's eyes lit up at seeing the blonde once more, and excitement radiated from him as he realised it was time. The former Hufflepuff didn't have a ring at that time, and so he'd made a makeshift ring out the silver glittering wire that was currently housing the fairy lights around the room, although he already knew exactly what he wanted to get for Mary Lou; just another reason that a second ceremony in the near future would be a good idea.

Ten didn't like the idea of sitting through another wedding, but she'd been promised it wouldn't be too long and then they'd be out to eat some nice food and celebrate as a whole family. Even though Ten lived with her dad, brother, and half sister Asphodel, she still thought of herself close to Auntie Leda and the rest of the Layton's, given that she'd been growing up with them. Even Uncle Zennon and Uncle Monty seemed to know who she was, and they weren't even her real uncles.

Still refusing to sit back in the front row, Ten waited to see what was going to happen next, and hoping that it wouldn't take too long.
