James strolled through the lawn of Hogwarts, relishing the beauty of the place that he now called home. He knew every part of the castle off by heart now, and he knew that the Wild Patch was just past a hedge. He had no love for the plants the Wild Patch club grew there - he preferred the simple beauty of flowers, like roses and lilies, over the crops and vegetables there. So continuing past the stone paved path that led to that area, he continued crossing the luscious lawn that stretched in front of him, full of possibilities.
As James neared a copse of trees, he stopped by a small bench set in the shade under one at the edge. He noticed the small, ornately inscribed silver plaque that adorned the wooden of the bench, and reading it made his heart twist. The words Betty and Ernest clawed their way into his mind, demanding his full attention. The words struck a chord with him; everyone around him had somebody meaningful in their life, be it a love, or even just a friend. James had neither, and he especially didn't have anybody to go with for the Yule Ball. The first two years had been lonely, and unexciting when he had attended the ball: everyone around him was dancing, talking, and having a good time. People even had friends they could go with, but that didn't apply to James either. So, on this beautiful sunny afternoon James had escaped the confines and memories of the castle and the few people he knew in it, and ventured out into the wilderness outside for a chance for peace. He hoped the solitude would help him think, or even just forget, especially when he needed to concentrate more on exams rather than friends and dates.
