Arachne Westwick had felt unmoored for months, ever since her sister had stopped talking to her. She had filled the silence with her new friends, and in a lot of ways felt more free than she had before, but she did miss Nessie a lot. It was like a part of her was wandering around in the world on its own, angrily. She knew Nessie had been deeply hurt by her, and she even understood why. But she also knew, after reflecting on it a lot, that she hadn't done anything wrong. Nessie's urge to control her had been stifling, and it had felt worse than this empty feeling.

She knew Nessie thought she had abandoned her and didn't think of her anymore, but that wasn't true. Arachne had sent her a rose, and she had watched. Watched quietly and from a distance, as they had always done together. So she knew what her sister did during the day, what classes she went to, where she spent time. So when she finally gathered the courage to talk to her again, she knew where to find her. She sat down next to her on the bench without saying a word, silently placing the wrapped up pastry she had brought between them. It was Nessie's favorite, even if she would never admit to liking anything.
