Freddie swung his bag as he walked through the dungeons with Declan. Hanging out with Declan was the best thing about Potions class. He was funny. Freddie was still grinning now, thinking about something dumb he’d said earlier. “Oh,” he said, as a couple of girls walked past. “Are you going to the Yule Ball? Did you ask anyone? A giiiirl?” Declan probably had a crush on someone already. Freddie neeeeeded to know who. Totally not so he could tease him. He was gonna tease him, but he also just wanted to know.

Declan wasn't sure if he had liked potions or not, it was a lot of steps to follow that Declan couldn't necessarily follow. But he did like the fact that Freddie was in the same class as him, so it made the lessons somewhat bearable. The Gryffindor had been walking with his friend, muttering how dumb potions was and how there were just too many steps to follow, as he held one of the straps of his bag that was placed on his shoulder. He had to process for a moment on what Freddie had said. "Oh uh, I dunno aye? You're kidding, right? Me asking someone? I'd be lucky if I had the guts to do that," Declan says with a shake of his head. Sure, the guy was social with other people, but asking someone to the Yule Ball? That was a whole other ball game that Declan didn't have the guts for. "Why? You got a girl in mind to take?" Declan teased, moving his eyebrows up and down.

“Why?” asked Freddie. It wasn’t that hard. You just asked a girl and they said yes. Or no. Hmm. Okay, it was scary. Freddie wasn’t gonna say that though - it made him feel cool not to say it. He laughed, like Declan had asked a stupid question, though he was thinking about Rose actually. Then Declan’s eyebrows made him laugh even harder. He tried to do the same thing back, to wiggle his eyebrows at his friend, but it was harder than it looked. “No - I dunno. Not really.” Before he could stop himself, he blurted: “Me and you - me and you should go. Woooah. I’m a genius. Yeah? Easy.” He kicked his bag as he swung it, like he was thinking about that more than the answer.

Declan looked at his friend like he was crazy. "What do you mean, why? The thought of someone rejecting you is quite scary. And what if the whole thing doesn't go well? Yeah, that's scary," Declan says with a shake of his head. He wasn't even thinking about girls at the moment, if he was being honest. He was more focused on his tarantula and his friends. He laughs along with Freddie when he wiggles his eyebrows and laughs a little harder when Freddie tries to do it himself. He double-takes at what Freddie says, making sure he heard his friend right before grinning. "You asking me out, Freddie?" Declan teases jokingly, as he then again wiggles his eyebrows up and down teasingly, as Declan was pretty sure that Freddie was only asking as a friend. "Nah, I'm only joking, yeah, we can totally go! I'd be down"

“Yeeeeah, I guess,” Freddie said. “But then you just ask someone else. And someone else. And someone else. And if it all goes bad…” He had to think about that. “You get over it.” He was making it sound easy, but he didn’t wanna ask Rose - he was too scared. It was scary. That was why he asked Declan. Well, he liked Declan too. Was he asking him out? Hmm. He didn’t wanna say no, but he didn’t wanna say yes either. So he just shrugged, scrunching his nose, and that could mean ‘no way’ or ‘maybe’ or even something else. He kicked his bag again. “Cool. So, question. If you could only just do one spell forever, for the rest of your life, which one would you pick?”

Declan's eyebrows furrowed further and further as Freddie spoke, frowning a little. "That sounds draining and exhausting" Declan mutters dramatically, as he rubs his forehead like he is stressed out. "I'd rather just lie on the ground in sorrow forever than keep doing that" Declan says with a shake of his head as he adjusts his bag on his shoulder. He forgot how heavy his bag was becoming from all the textbooks he was carrying. Declan paused for a moment as he thought about Freddie's question. "That's a hard question. There are like a million spells out there and a lot we haven't learned yet," Declan says with a chuckle and a shake of his head. There were a lot of options popping up in his mind. "I wonder if there's a spell where I can keep my spider at a certain distance away from me so I don't keep loosing track of where he is" Declan says as he thinks aloud. Recently, Declan hadn't had any sort of trouble losing his spider, but that could all change instantly. "How about you?"

“Me too,” said Freddie, laughing. “I wouldn’t do that. I wouldn’t ask anyone. I mean, just one person, maybe two - but only if I liked them. Not everyone. He wasn’t desperate like Ares. There was no point asking a girl just ‘cause you didn’t have someone yet. You had to like them, else it’d just be awkward. Freddie looked at Declan, still swinging his bag. He was gonna break the strap on accident one day. “You should keep him two centimeters away from you. Two millimeters. You should just glue him on your arm, like a tattoo. Then you’d never lose him.” Little Will probably wasn’t gonna live very long. Freddie was calling it. “I’d pick a spell that blows stuff up. It works for everything. Gotta wash the dishes? Boom - they’re gone. Wanna unlock a door? Boom - it’s open. Say one problem that’s not gone away when you’ve exploded it. I bet you can’t.”

Declan nodded along to what Freddie was saying. The Gryffindor wasn't even sure if he was able to ask someone out on a date, let alone to be their partner. It seemed like a whole lot of learning curves and whatnot, and Declan honestly wasn't ready for that scene yet. Declan snorted at Freddie's comment about Little Will being attached to him. "What if I squish him in my sleep when he's glued onto me? I will not be putting Little Will through that," Declan says with a chuckle, as he had suddenly had an image of his poor spider being squished while he was rolling over in his bed, it made him shake in disgust. Declan paused for a moment. "What's happening with the collateral damage and aftermath of blowing stuff up? That's a mess that needs to be cleaned up once that's blown up, right?"

"He's gonna get squished anyway," said Freddie quietly. Declan lost his spider, like, every single day. Someone was gonna stomp on it eventually. People stomped on way smaller, less scarier spiders, and they couldn't even hurt you. Tarantulas could probably hurt you. "Does he ever bite?"

Freddie slung his bag back on his shoulder. Hmm. That was true. He didn't think about the mess. "Not my problem," he said. "I'll just - I'll just make a friend with - a person who can do the cleaning up spell. And that's the only spell they can do, so they're super bored. I'm being nice. I'm being helpful. I'm giving them something to do."
