Mhairi was excited for her last ever Yule Ball. In a few months she and her sister would be graduating, but until then she still had a few things she wanted to do. The seventh year had dressed in a floor length flowy dress that she thought would be both good to dance in. Of course she couldn’t actually hear the music, and she’d have to rely on her dance partner to be able to settle into a rhythm. She looked around the hall as it was already in full swing. The Headmistress was saying something at the front but she couldn’t tell what from her position in the hall. Instead her eyes were wandering through the hall, trying to see if there was anyone else she knew while she waited for a certain Ravenclaw..

Hermione had lost count of how long she had spent in front of her dorm mirror fidgeting with her dress. It was her last ball after all, for all she knew opportunities to dress up like this would be few and far between in her post Hogwarts life. When she was finally satisfied she made her up to the Great hall. She wasn't sure if she would see Ellie, they hadn't planned on meeting up and Hermione hadn't seen the Hufflepuff for a while. She walked over to the refreshments and got a drink before scanning the room for familiar faces. Her eyes eventually landed on Mhairi who she didn't really know but was familiar enough with that approaching her was better than standing alone waiting for a certain Hufflepuff to show. Hermione moved in front of the girl to get her attention with a small wave. Having only had one lesson she was far from being able to communicate in sign but she had managed to pick up the sign for beautiful but lacked the ability to craft a coherent sentence so simply smiled and told Mhairi she looked beautiful the best she could.

Hudson couldn't imagine going to the Yule Ball but yet there he was in his dorm putting on a decent outfit, not having a suit at school. He always thought with his height and weight he looked too skinny and felt awkward so his shirt was left not tucked in and a much larger size than he could really fit into. He was meeting Mhairi at the ball this year. He hadn't ever thought over the past few years about her that much but running into her alone in the Greenhouses had been really nice. She was a very kind person and he liked that she was quiet. He did wonder though if she was able to hear if she'd be a loud person, since he thought her personality did stand out from their classmates. But, then again maybe he just thought that she stood out because his heart had been formulating a crush on her since they started to hang out more. Entering the Great Hall he took a moment to look at the entire scene before him. It was a lot of people, and he was glad that being in his 7th year he wouldn't have to go to too many more events like this, all the people stuffed into one room with music he always felt awkward dancing to. He spotted his date talking to another girl in their year. He didn't know the girl too well, she had a famous person's name was all he could really remember. On approach he waved to get Mhairi's attention and signed Hello, how are you? to her. She had taught him some basic communications over the past few weeks which he had enjoyed learning.

Mhairis eyes landed on another student, one that she’d seen around during the sign language classes she’d been hosting recently, and she smiled at the Slytherin who seemed to be headed in her direction. As she gave Hermione a wave, the Hufflepuff watched to see what she was doing, although it wasn’t quiet right. Mhairi didn’t want to assume what Hermione was trying to tell her, but after getting the gist of the word, the seventh year put out her own hands, taking the girls in hers and readjusting the position of her hands, before doing the motion herself too. Hermione looked stunning in her dress, and Mhairi wished she could pull off more than just simple pieces that didn’t cling to her too heavily. She chuckled lightly, or so she thought; it wasn’t as though she could tell. Mhairi spotted another wave in the corner of her eye and smiled as Hudson joined the pair, delighted when he remembered the signs she’d demonstrated a short while ago. “Good, and you?” She sighed back, trying to keep things simple so that Hermione could follow along as well. She glanced the boy up and down, a look of approval on her face. Taking a moment, Mhairi spelt out both of their names with her fingers as a sign of introduction, hoping that she wasn’t going too quickly. She was pleased when Hudson had agreed to come to the Yule Ball with her. He’d been her very first friend here at the school and it just felt right to have come in a complete circle.
