violet had spent a while getting ready. her dress this year was simple. Red a simple cut with the only detail being two small bows at the shoulders. if you could even call them bows. it was simple, yes, but it was classy. she just needed to make sure that her hair and makeup were impecable as there were no distractions for it. It had taken several attempts to get the perfect smoky eye including one time when she accidently stabbed herself in the eye with the eyeliner, and she had to quickly duck out of the room before her dorm mates made fun of her for it and the plack streak that spread down her face as her eyes watered.
but when she was done she was pleased with how she looked, she just needed to make sure she didnt get anything else in her eyes.
She made her way up to the ball and was supprised that she was one of the first ones to arrive. she made a loop of the hall taking in the decorations on both the hall its self and the people. she didnt want to be one of the first on the dance floor or skating and she didnt see any of her few friends around so she did what any solo person would do and stop near the food table. she took a plate and added a mince pie and a couple of turkey and cranberry sandwiches and some pigs in blankets and a glass of cranberry soda and made her way to one of the small tables. slowly sipping on her drink and nibbling her food as she watched people pass watching and judging them as though they were models on a runway and she had a front row seat.

Jasper didn’t particularly want to be at the ball and he’d only come because he genuinely thought it was compulsory to be here. Even though it probably wouldn't have mattered had he not gone as no one seemed to notice him here anyway, not even Ruby. It was times like this that made him miss Tori. She would've noticed him. She probably would’ve made him dance too and he would have had fun. At least she’d be back next semester and that thought helped a little. He made his way to the food table and filled his own plate then scanned the room for somewhere to sit.

He noticed an older girl at a nearby table. She wasn’t talking to anyone, just sipping her drink and watching. Jasper wondered if she might want some company, like how he wanted company too. He hovered a second, then sat down at her table without really thinking it through. "Hi" He said at last, that seemed like a good place to start a conversation. "Do you like balls?" And by that, he meant the Yule Ball.

Violet was lost in thoughts as she watched all the couples moving through the room, even second and third years with dates when she didnt even get to kiss someone at the spin the bottle game. She had got through one of her turkey sandwiches and a pig in blanket and was just taking a sip of her drink when someone put a plate next to hers drew her attention back from her thoughts. he looked over to see a boy younger than her sitting himself down "hi" she responded in greetign not quote sure what to make of the supprise arrival. He honestly looked slightly dorky. She was about to open her mouth to say something when he spoke first, asking her if she liked balls. Like what kind of question was that? "do i like what?" she said as she looked around, half expecting to find a table just behind her with several other dorky kids snickering from his dare.

Jasper had just taken a massive bite of his food when the older student asked him to repeat himself. "Uh" he held up a finger as if to say hold that thought. His cheeks were full as he urgently chewed then swallowed way too soon that he risked indigestion, but at least he could talk now. "Balls!" he blurted again. "Like the Yule Ball. Not you know, the sporty kind." He stared at his plate, the colour rising alarmingly quickly in his cheeks as he wondered if she thought he meant the other, other kind.

Violet was supprided the boy could fit so much in his mouth at a time as he chewed frantically holding his finger up as thought she was going anywhere or particually invested in where this conversation was going. she looked back out at the floor at the dance floor which was starting to fill up with couples and groups of friends. but still none of her friends were there. she turned back to the boy jut in time for him to repeat what she had thought he had said. balls. glad for the clarification not that her mind had initially gone to the sporty balls. "Oh, not the sporty kind right. yeah, the Yule Ball is good fun. its nice to dress up and hang with your friends, and admire everyone's outfits" she said as though it wasn't plainly obvious that she was not doing the hanging with friends part.
