First Years; Lesson Two

Professor Tobias Blade watched as the students filed in, making a mental note of each name despite the exhaustion he carried. His robes, a muted charcoal today, swished quietly as he stood, voice rough but gentle. "Morning, everyone," he greeted, scanning the room. "I hope you did your reading. Can someone tell me what spell we’re focusing on today, and what it does?" He pointed to a student who answered, and Blade nodded with approval. "Right. Lumos. It lights up the tip of your wand, so you can see in the dark—like a candle or flashlight. Simple, but useful."

He took a step forward, voice softening just a little. "Find a partner today—someone you might not know well. You’re working together for this semester. Your grades stay your own, but no one learns in isolation. You’ve got support—from me, from your friends. Remember that."

"Any questions about Lumos?" he asked, pausing to answer a few. Then, with a small wave of his wand, the lights dimmed. "I’m here if you need help. Once you’ve got Lumos down, try countering it with Nox."

Blade moved among the students quietly, offering advice when asked. As the lesson wrapped, he flicked the lights back on. "I saw some good work today. Keep up the reading—next week it’s Wingardium Leviosa. Have a good one." He settled back at his desk, the faintest trace of a smile crossing his face as the students left.

OOC Notes: Please make sure to do your reading on Alohomora and Colloportus. Points will be awarded for participation, study posts, and practicing the spells Lumos and Nox. First posters to answer questions will receive bonus house points.

Freddie sat down, laying his wand horizontally on his desk. Fairy wing. It was a stupid-sounding core, but it was supposed to be really good at charms. Why couldn't they just give everyone a core that was good at everything? He wanted to be good at transfiguration spells, too, but he only got a good grade because Professor Pirrip went so easy on him.

He raised his hand. "Lumos," he said. "It's the... light spell." Of course, Professor Blade went on and explained it way better than he had, but maybe he'd get a couple of house points anyway. Crazy that he even cared about points. Well... maybe he'd always kinda cared, a little.

Who should he team up with? Professor Blade didn't know who his friends were. He could pick anyone, really. Not Rose, not Marina, not James, not Gaia. Would Annika want to work with him? Her wand had a fairy wing core too, though he'd told the class his was dragon heartstring. He went and tapped her on the arm. "Wanna be a team?" he asked, already glancing around for someone else in case she said no.

The lights dimmed. Freddie held up his wand. He'd already tried the spell before, in bed, when everyone was asleep and he'd wanted to read his book, but the light hadn't been very bright. Now that he didn't have to whisper, it was way better. He pushed the glowing tip of his wand into his fingertip, wondering if it would shine all the way through. It didn't. Then he tried up his nose. "Is my face glowing?" he asked. After that, he tried Nox, which was weirdly harder, though that might've been 'cause he was still giggling. But he got it in the end.

Professor Blade looked up at one point in the class and spotted one of the students doing the most colossally stupid thing that he could think of. With a visible and audible sigh, he turned the lights on for a moment and locked eyes with the perpetrator. "Mr. Lagowski, take your wand out of your nose immediately before you do something even stupider and blow your head off. 10 points from Ravenclaw, next time it will be detention." He said, dimming the lights again and moving on with the lesson like nothing had happened. He was so tired and these students weren't making things any easier.

Freddie wondered why the lights had turned on. Then he heard his name. Ooooh. Oh. Oh. Yeah, that was kinda stupid - he didn't think about that. He wiped his wand on his robes, feeling like all the lights in the room were suddenly shining directly on him. But... okay, so, it wasn't smart, but it was still funny. He rubbed his nose to hide his smile and went back to practising.

Why did the professors always seem to feel the need to be so chipper in the mornings? If she had her way she would be all snuggled up in bed. It felt like it would have all just been so much easier if she could have done that. Oh well. She had been halfway through a yawn to prove her tiredness when the lights dimmed, but she turned to look at Freddie when he tapped her on the arm. "Sure," she said, flashing him a quick grin. She didn't know him that well, but he seemed okay, from what she'd seen. Though she'd heard there had been some trouble with him earlier in the year, she hadn't really seen anything on her part and she could hardly talk anyway, her friends and her always tried to sneak into the forest - eventually they were probably going to be found out. Besides, if he wanted to stick his wand up his nose, she wasn't going to stop him, he wasn't her responsibility - though she did laugh, because it was funny. They practiced Lumos and Nox together for the rest of the lesson and she told him that she was looking forward to working with him for the rest of the year.

Marina slid into her desk at the corner, completely ignoring Freddie, which was fine because he didn't want to have much to do with her anyway. She listened when the professor talked about what they would be doing today, happy to follow along. She liked taking notes too, so it was nice when she was able to. She paired quickly with someone so they could practice their spells and rolled her eyes when she saw Freddie. Maybe she was lucky that he seemed to dislike her, if he was going to get himself into trouble like this. She shook her head and went back to focusing on herself and her partner as they completed the set before class finished.
