Second Years, Lesson Six: Animare & Wizarding Chess

As his students arrived for the lesson, Edward was at the front of the classroom a chess set laid out. This was his last session with these students this semester so he wanted to have some fun before their exam. "Morning!" He greeted his students with a smile. "Anyone ever played a wizard chess before?" He questioned, looking around at a mixed reaction. "For anyone who has never played wizard chess: it's chess, except the pieces come to life to attack each other on your orders." He explained easily. "Before these pieces have minds on their own, they start out as normal, boring, chess pieces that resemble those used by muggles."

"The pieces are transfigured, by a special team of wizarding toymakers, to come to life. Each set generally has its own distinct personality, depending on the preference of the witch or wizard who brought them to life. This type of transfiguration falls under the Inanimate to Animate type of spell."

"This," Edward pointed at the chess set, "Is a muggle chess set. The pieces remain stationary, having no animation or personality of their own, until we grant them that."

Taking out his wand, he aimed at the marble queen. "Animare!" At once the piece's facial features changed. Her mouth contorted and melted, shifting from a solid line to something more mobile. The piece remained in the clothing that had been carved onto it, but it seemed to come to life, the marble cloth separating from its body somewhat to resemble a more living and free-flowing appearance. The queen loomed over its subjects with an impassive expression, until she seemed to notice the classroom of students beyond her board. "Hmph." She tutted, her brow creasing.

Edward's eyes moved from the queen to the class with a smile. "As you can see, the incantation 'Animare' brings things to life. Naturally, other inanimate objects are brought to life to amuse children. Chocolate frogs are an excellent example that comes to mind. After the chocolate is mixed and set, candy makers use a sort of mild variant of the spell. The result is that they really only get one good jump before -"

"Why are there children on my battlefield, peasant?" The queen cut in, causing him to laugh. He then quickly tapped her with his wand again and the queen froze back to her inanimate state.

"Anyway, the wand movement," He continued with a grin. "You should tap the object that you are going to animate once squarely in it's centre and then aim the wand at the object, speaking aloud the incantation. With the proper visualisation and concentration, the correct wand movement, and a firmly spoken incantation, you should find yourself able to cast most inanimate to animate spells. In your cases, you aren't likely to flesh out any sort of faux-personality, but you should give it life. Now one by one come to the front, pick a chess piece, and try to bring it to life in front of the class. Starting with you." Edward pointed at a student sitting on the first bench of the first row.

Roleplay the lesson, including trying to bring a chess piece to life, for full marks. Extra points given for creativity. Tag @Professor Edward Pirrip if you would like me to interact with your character!

Miles walked into his last Transfiguration lesson fully expecting them to be told to take out their books and study. So he was quite surprised to learn that it was the opposite of that and they would be learning some more magic. Certainly not something that he was going to complain about, swinging his legs under his seat as he leaned forward and listened to what the Professor was saying. He supposed that learning how to animate chess pieces was pretty cool, and he was interested in learning. After all, knowing how to animate an inanimate object could be really useful, so he was eager to get started, hopping up from his seat when it was his turn and walking to the front. He picked one of the knights because they were the coolest, clearing his throat as he attempted the spell. It took a few times to get it right, but he eventually managed, grinning rather proudly as he once more pocketed his wand and stepped back to let someone else have their turn. Then, once they had all been dismissed, Miles returned to grab his things before leaving the classroom.

Mania was still not over the fact that she'd pet the Professor and talked to him like to an actual dog during the first lesson when he was in his animal form. She still thought about it everytime she tried to fall asleep, successfully making her smack her pillow and scream into it silently. Today's lesson was easy enough it seemed, turning chess pieces to life. Nia didn't know much about chess if she was going to be honest, they all just looked really funny and so when the Professor's piece turned to life Nia couldn't help the small giggle escaping her lips. "Sorry sir." She apologized quickly and waited for her turn to pick a piece. Nia picked a man with on a horse, at least she thought it was a man, on a horse, but what would she know. "You better turn alive, not that I'm threatening you but like I definitely am." She muttered quietly to the piece before repeating the movement from the professor.

"Animare." Nia watched the piece gain life and let out another giggle at the horse kicking its front feet forward and making a loud sound. The man on the horse sent her a glare that she was sure if looks could kill she'd be dead ten times over right in that moment. "Sorry sorry, you just look quite funny, It's nothing personal but personally if I was against you in the battlefield I wouldn't be scared." The Gryffindor explained with small giggles between every now and then. At the end of the words the man held out its stick with a spiky ball at the end of it and was waving it as if trying to aim at Mania. Her eyes widened and she ran behind her Professor, using him as a shield. "Sir I think I made it mad! It's your problem now!" No way in hell was she gonna be attacked by a chess piece, her Professor would be more equipped to do so.

As the last week of the semester came around, Tess was just eager for it to be over. She entered the Transfiguration classroom and took her usual seat within the room as the professor started the lesson. He was going to teach them how to bring things to life, which sounded very exciting. The Gryffindor watched as he approached his chess set and used the spell to bring the Queen to life. Tess chuckled as she spoke and seemed rather full of herself.

When the professor asked the class to come up one by one to do the same thing to all of the chess pieces, Tess did not waste any time when she was called up. With her wand in her hand, she approached the chess board and chose to make one of the horses come to life. "Animare." she said, pointing her wand to the piece and using the correct wand movement. She jumped as the horse began to neigh, and she chuckled at this. It was definitely a fun activity that the professor had them do, all while performing a brand new spell. Happy with the lesson, the Tess thanked the professor before leaving.

Autumn entered the Transfiguration classroom and took her usual sear near the back of the room. The professor had another spell for them to learn today and Autumn was looking forward to it. They would be turning the chess pieces to life, which sounded like fun. When it was her turn, Autumn approached the chess board and pondered a moment before choosing to turn the rook to life. She wondered what exactly this would do. "Animare." she said. She frowned as it didn't seem to do anything. However, the class had ended, and so Autumn left, a little disappointed.

Animating chess pieces wasn’t what Lincoln had expected from his final Transfiguration lesson of the semester. He, as he was sure many of his classmates, had been hoping for a chill review lesson to prepare for their exam. Professor Pirrip clearly had other ideas. He watched the professor’s demonstration with interest; it might not have been what he wanted to be doing, but he couldn’t deny it was pretty interesting to see something come to life. After the demonstration, it was his turn to have a go himself. Lincoln got to work, he cast the spell on a knight piece and watched it start to gallop around his desk and challenge him to a duel. It was pretty funny. He brought the piece over to the professor to grade and return to its normal state then he left the classroom.
