First Years, Lesson Four

Gabrielle had let her students know to dress more casually for this lesson - muggle clothes if they had them, or at least no robes. She was a little hesitant about taking such young students on a field trip, especially into the muggle world, but given the amount of lecturing they'd been subjected to this semester she figured they deserved a break. She knew she needed a break from the classroom as much as any of them. "I'm sure you're all clever enough to have figured out we're going on a trip today. Even I get sick of lecturing. So, since you can't apparate as yet, we need a way to get out of the school. Can anyone tell me what this might be?" she asked, gesturing to her sphynx statuette and nodding when a student gave the correct answer. "That's right, a portkey. If you've never taken one before, I'm so sorry, hope you haven't eaten recently. We're going to Te Papa Tongarewa, the museum of Aotearoa. It's in Wellington, and yes, it's a muggle museum. I expect you all to be on your best behaviour and blend in. No magic discussion until we're safely back. You must keep your wands away." Gabrielle was stern, but it wasn't out of malice. She did just want the trip to be a safe one.

"But you've been working hard this year, and you deserve a break that I can at least write off as vaguely educational. You might hopefully learn a little more about this country, but at the very least you'll be getting out of the castle for a couple of hours." Gabrielle smirked, gesturing to the students to gather around. "Alright, I want you all to make sure you're touching the portkey, get at least a fingertip on it, and brace yourselves. Do not move your hand from it until we land. You'll need to wait for my okay to move once we get there. Stick together." Within a couple of moments, once they were all ready, they were sucked through space and ended up in a clear spot nearby to the museum but private enough that they were not easily spotted. Which had been hard to find, but she'd looked around for a while to manage it. Gabrielle gave them a few moments to recover, especially the students who had never used a portkey before. Once they were ready to go, she made sure they were all together and led them through the museum. She thought better of letting them go off on their own while they were still only eleven and twelve and instead they went through as a tour group of sorts, letting the students stop to play with some of the interactive exhibits, marvel at the dinosaurs and megafauna, and making a point of stopping at the giant squid. They stopped to have some water and sit around in the harbour for a little while, enjoying the sunshine, before it was time to return to the school. Gabrielle hoped that the students could all at least find something interesting about the day out, even if it was just that they'd gotten the opportunity to go somewhere else and not worry about studying for a bit. She did probably bring the mood down in dismissing them reminding them to make sure they were studying, but it was her job, she supposed. What was a history professor if not a complete killjoy? At least she was a step up from Binns.

Nik had been a little confused when they’d been told to dress in muggle attire - that usually meant they were going on a field trip somewhere, she knew how these things worked, but she wasn’t sure if she wanted to go on a field trip to the muggle world. That didn’t really sound all that interesting. Didn’t they have wizarding Museums they could visit? That sounded like it would be more fun to her than whatever they would see at a Muggle one. She sighed, and groaned when the portkey dumped them at some big whatever. She walked around the place in a small group, not really paying attention to who she was with, though she took some notes so that the professor knew she’d at least looked at everything. When they were called back, she quickly headed back and left the classroom when everything was over.

Amias walked into the history of magic classroom and took his usual spot in the room. His gaze moved to the professor at the front of the class as she got starte,d but he was pretty glad for the break in lectures. He took the portkey after it had been introduced and then they were taken to a museum that he had been to a couple of times. The boy split off on his own when he could and then began exploring the different sites as the professor went over them. Amias had a good time and returned to the meeting point with plenty of time. He had a fun and it did make for a nice change to what he usually had to do.

Gaia had done as told; She'd dressed in more casual wear. As she entered the classroom she looked at the statue the Professor was pointing at. It was a portkey, Nia had told her as much. Besides Gaia wasn't going to pretend she was a stranger to those, nevertheless the first year trailed behind the others and grabbed onto the thing. As they were transported to their destination the Slytherin didn't need too much time to regain her composure, her parents liked portkeys. As the Professor let them explore the museum freely Gaia took full advantage of it. Looking at everything there was before returning back to the Professor in time to get back to the castle.

Eloise was giddy with excitement today. She made sure to wear her casual wear like she was told, while also packing the things she needed for the lesson. Once she double checked on everything she had, she quickly went to her earring collection and put on her cinnamon roll earrings. Eloise then happily skipped to her history of magic classroom and took her usual spot in the room, excited to hear what plans the professor had in store for them.

Eloise moved her attention towards the professor as the professor started to speak. The Hufflepuff gasped quietly in excitement when she heard that they'd be going on a trip. It wasn't long until they got hold of the portkey, and they were off to their trip's destination. They had arrived at the museum, which was based in Wellington. It wasn't long until they were allowed to explore the museum. Eloise made sure to take note of the things she saw about the museum and anything she thought was interesting, as she didn't want to miss out on any important information.

It wasn't long until they had to go back to the castle via the portkey. Once they had arrived back at the classroom, Eloise made sure to say a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out of the classroom with the rest of her friends and classmates.

A field trip! Tahlia had not been out of the castle (or the grounds) since the sorting. It was kind of cool that she would get a chance today. She had dressed down in 'muggle' clothes which basically was just a pair or jeans and a top. Simple enough. Although she did miss the flow of the robes. She knew they weren't allowed. Tahlia felt underdressed going through the corridors until she reached the History of Magic classroom. She took a seat as the professor began. To her surprise, a question was asked. Tahlia knew the answer. She raised her hand quickly. "it's a portkey professor" she said with a big smile. She had learned about them and even used one. It wasn't her favourite thing but she knew it was a useful form of a travel.

She approached the portkey as they were allowed to, placing a finger upon it. And off them went. The unpleasant feeling filled her. She would have liked to fly instead but this was quicker and well less obvious. Thalia caught her balance as her feet hit the ground, in a new location. They were at a muggle museum. Tahlia had not been here before, not that she could remember. She listened to the instructions before following her classmates and professor into the museum.

It was almost like a guided tour as the professor led them through the exhibits. Tahlia enjoyed the interactive ones the most. The ones about the stars in the night sky also was super interesting, based on an old movie that children used to watch apparently. Tahlia didn't care much about the movie she had never heard of from the ancient times, but looking at the stars was also the best. Tahlia enjoyed her time, making sure to stay with the group.

It was a good time overall, but Tahlia was ready to head back to the castle soon. Her feet were tired and she was starving. Once again with a time of portkey travel, Tahlia wasn't as hungry anymore but she was back at Hogwarts. She grabbed her things and left the classroom, her feet going to her common room to curl up on the couch.
